third, to send to him his uncle the Marquis, who had recently arrived from Lombardy, both because he had a desire to meet with him, who had been away for a long time, and so that he might use him also as an ambassador to him.” Maroules, therefore, saying that he would do what was ordered, departed. The Marquis Theodore, however, was the son of the elder emperor by the empress Eirene, the daughter of the Marquis Montferrat, who was ruler of a part of Lombardy; and having gone to Lombardy according to his maternal inheritance, he ruled there the dominion that belonged to him from his mother's side. At that time he happened to have come to Byzantium, both to see his relatives, and so that he might be benefited by the emperor his father; and it was his custom to do this at certain intervals of years. And Maroules, after a little while, coming from the emperor, announced to the young emperor 1.257 that the emperor his grandfather had commanded him to withdraw from there, and not to stand his ground there, winning over his city for himself by deceiving and persuading whomever he met. For it was not possible for him to come to the wall, nor would he grant him entrance, nor indeed would he send his uncle the Marquis to him. And standing near Maroules was a certain Markos Kavallarios, the son of Bardas Kavallarios, being one of the servants of the elder emperor, who said rudely and uncivilly to the young emperor to withdraw from there before he had eaten his own head. But the emperor, laughing sweetly at the saying, said, “But this would not be possible, O Markos. For while living I could not eat my own head, and having died it would likewise be more impossible to do this, so that it happens that you are proven false on both counts.” To Markos, then, the emperor spoke such things in jest, but he ordered Maroules to report such things to the emperor as from him, saying, “God would know, and I myself know, and the facts themselves bear witness with me, that I have left nothing undone of my zeal or diligence in doing what you commanded and what was in accordance with your will; and I reckoned that you too would know these things better than others; for it was necessary. But since some envious demon has thus contrived matters, and you have forgotten the deeds of goodwill and obedience towards you which I have shown in the given opportunities, and being persuaded by slanderous and corrupt men, you have again stirred up the war against me, having previously plotted and conspired much against me, as 1.258 became clear to me from the captured letters, which I sent to you with the high priests who came to me; and though I pleaded many times, you did not accept peace, and now that I have come here and clasped your knees and done everything for there to be peace, you have not in the least abated your anger, but have sent me away unsuccessful, having cast me off like some useless vessel; and you have put your hope in the chained leopard, which you have unleashed against me. Behold, the peace and the oaths made for its sake I entrust to God, whom I myself hold in sworn reverence; and having committed all my affairs to the one who judges all things justly, I now of necessity proceed to war. But I am confident that, after a short time has passed, you yourself will not be ignorant of your present lack of counsel, but you will learn clearly from the events themselves that the things you ought to have refrained from, these you have chosen, while those you decided to abandon, it was better to cling to with all your strength.” Having said such things, the young emperor dismounted from his horse and did obeisance even to his absent grandfather and emperor. And Maroules likewise, just as before, offered his obeisance in silence to the young emperor from the wall. Then the emperor, having greeted the others on the wall, departed from there and came to Selymbria. And having arranged matters there as seemed best to him, and having appointed a governor for the Selymbrians, he came to Didymoteichon, leaving the *parakoimomenos* Apokaukos in Selymbria, so that if he should establish anything for the sake of 1.259 Selymbria's security, he might come back to him; which he also did within a few days. But the emperor in Didymoteichon
