and filling the universe as full, how shall I not be also creating in all my creations? For I was everywhere in the universe as superabundant and I fill all things by creating. Understand what I am saying to you! I did not change place by creating, nor was I united with the created things; but being uncircumscribed, where will you ever say I am? I am not speaking to you corporeally, but understand me intellectually. But seeking me spiritually you will find me uncircumscribed, and yet on this account nowhere, neither within nor without, even if I am everywhere and in all things impassibly and unconfusedly; (173) on this account I am outside all things, because I was also before all things. But let us leave this whole creation which you see, because it does not partake of reason and justly has no kinship with reason, being deprived of all mind. Let us then grant a living creature akin to the reason of wisdom, so that as mind to wisdom and as reason to reason, having a relation of kinship and affinity, the created thing may rather have communion fittingly with the creator, as existing according to the image and likeness of the creator. What living creature is this I speak of? I spoke to you of course of man, a rational being among the irrational beings, as twofold from both sensible and intelligible things. This one, in the midst of created things, alone knows God; to this one alone God is comprehensible incomprehensibly to the mind, is seen invisibly and is held ungraspably. How comprehensibly and how incomprehensibly, and how mixedly unmixedly?

καί πληρῶν τό πᾶν ὡς πλήρης, πῶς οὐκ ἔσομαι καί κτίσας ἐν τοῖς κτίσμασί μου πᾶσι; Πανταχοῦ καί γάρ ὑπῆρχον ἐν τῷ πᾶν ὡς ὑπερπλήρης καί πληρῶ τά πάντα κτίσας. Νόει ἅπερ φθέγγομαί σοι! Οὐ μετέστην τόπου κτίσας, οὐδ᾿ ἡνώθην τοῖς κτισθεῖσιν˙ ἀπερίγραπτον δέ ὄντα ποῦ ποτέ με φήσεις εἶναι; Οὐ σωματικῶς σοι λέγω, ἀλλά νοητῶς μοι νόει. Ζητῶν δέ πνευματικῶς με ἀπερίγραπτον εὑρήσεις, οὐδαμοῦ δ᾿ αὖ κατά τοῦτο, οὐδέ ἔσω οὐδέ ἔξω, εῖ καί πανταχοῦ καί ἐν πᾶσιν ἀπαθῶς καί ἀσυγχύτως˙ (173) κατά τοῦτο δ᾿ἔξω πάντων, ὅτι καί πρό πάντων ἤμην. Ἀλλ᾿ ἀφήσωμεν τήν κτίσιν ὅλην ταύτην ἥνπερ βλέπεις, ὅτι λόγου οὐ μετέχει καί δικαίως πρός τόν λόγον οἰκειότητα οὐκ ἔχει, νοῦ παντός ἐστερημένη. ∆ῶμεν οὖν οἰκεῖον ζῷον πρός τόν λόγον τῆς σοφίας, ἵν᾿ ὡς νοῦς πρός τήν σοφίαν καί ὡς λόγος πρός τόν λόγον συγγενῶς τε καί οἰκείως ἔχον μᾶλλον σχῇ καλῶς καί κοινωνίαν τό κτισθέν μετά τοῦ κτίστου, ὡς τοῦ κτίστου κατ᾿ εἰκόνα καί ὁμοίωσιν ὑπάρχον. Ποῖον τοῦτο λέγω ζῷον; Ἄνθρωπόν σοι πάντως εἶπον λογικόν ἐν τοῖς ἀλόγοις ὡς διπλοῦν ἐξ ἑκατέρων αἰσθητῶν καί νοουμένων. Οὗτος μέσον τῶν κτισμάτων τόν Θεόν γινώσκει μόνος, τούτῳ μόνῳ ὁ Θεός δέ κατά νοῦν ληπτός ἀλήπτως, καθορᾶται ἀοράτως καί κρατεῖται ἀκρατήτως. Πῶς ληπτῶς καί πῶς ἀλήπτως, πῶς δέ καί μικτῶς ἀμίκτως;
