by the example (even if it seems rather mean) of an old garment easily torn by any chance pretext, which is unable to return again to its original strength. Therefore, as in such a time, there is great need for zeal and much diligence that the Churches may receive some benefit. And the benefit is that what was formerly divided be united. And union would come about if we were willing in matters where we do no harm to souls to condescend to the weaker. Since, therefore, many mouths have been opened against the Holy Spirit and many tongues have been sharpened for blasphemy against Him, we ask you, as far as it is in your power, to reduce the blasphemers to a small number and to receive into communion those who do not say the Holy Spirit is a creature, so that the blasphemers may be left alone and either, put to shame, return to the truth or, persisting in their sin, be untrustworthy on account of their small number. Let us therefore seek nothing more, but let us propose the faith of Nicaea to the brothers who wish to be joined with us, and if they agree to that, let us also ask that they not say the Holy Spirit is a creature, nor be in communion with those who say so. And beyond these things I ask that nothing more be sought from us. For I am persuaded that by longer association and by uncontroversial joint exercise, and if anything more should need to be added for clarification, the Lord who works all things together for good for those who love him will grant it.

114.τ TO THOSE IN TARSUS CONCERNING CYRIACUS

114.1 How great a good peace is, what need is there to say to men who are sons of

peace? Since, therefore, this great and wonderful thing, which is earnestly sought by all who love the Lord, is now in danger of being reduced to a mere name, because iniquity has abounded and the love of many has consequently grown cold, I think it is fitting that this one thing be the endeavor of those who genuinely and truly serve the Lord: to bring back to unity the Churches which have been in many parts and in many ways cut off from one another. Which thing I myself also attempting to do, would not justly incur the charge of being a busybody. For nothing is so characteristic of a Christian as to be a peacemaker; wherefore also the Lord has promised us the greatest reward for it. Having therefore met with the brothers and seen their great brotherly love and affection for you, and still greater love for Christ and their exactness and vigor concerning the faith, and that they make great effort for both, not to be separated from your love and not to betray the sound faith, having approved their good intention I write to your dignity, exhorting you with all love to have them genuinely united and partakers of every ecclesiastical care, having also vouched to them for your orthodoxy, that you too by the grace of God, with zeal for the truth, are prepared for all things, whatsoever you must suffer for the word of truth. And these things are, as I persuade myself, neither contrary to you nor insufficient for the full assurance of the aforesaid brothers: that you confess the faith set forth by our Fathers who once gathered at Nicaea, and reject none of the words there, but know that three hundred and eighteen, coming together without contention, did not speak without the working of the Holy Spirit; and to add to that faith that one must not say the Holy Spirit is a creature, nor yet be in communion with those who say so, so that the Church of God may be pure, having no tare mixed in with her. This full assurance being proposed to them by your compassion, they themselves are ready
