end. "For there are yet days for the fulfillment of the consummation." For not a little time, he says, is still left for the constitution of the present life. And here he clearly taught us about the consummation, and that in it the aforementioned things will happen. "And you shall rest and you shall rise for your time (but more correctly, your lot, as is clear from what follows), at the consummation of days." For now, he says, it is fitting for you to receive the common end; but you shall rise, and not simply rise, but to your lot, that is, with the company of those like you. And showing when, he added: "At the consummation of days." Thus clearly the divine archangel, through the blessed and thrice-blessed Daniel, taught us the resurrection. Thus having completed the revelation, the prophet added: 14. "And king Astyages was gathered to his fathers, and Cyrus the Persian took his kingdom, and Daniel was a companion of the king, and glorious above all his friends. "And Astyages was the maternal grandfather of Cyrus; and when he died, and Cyaxares his son was not able to 81.1544 manage the kingdom, Cyrus, having destroyed the kingdom of the Assyrians and Chaldeans, transferred the power of the Medes to the Persians. "He was a table-companion of the king," he says, and a house-companion, and placed before all his intimates. For having this confidence, he both pointed out the things foretold concerning him by God through the prophet Isaiah, and he prepared for the release of the people to be made. We, then, have learned these things from the divine prophecy of Daniel. But it is right to lament the Jews, who dare to place this divine prophet outside the prophetic list, and this after having learned by experience the truth of the prophecy. But it is indeed clear that those of today have added this blasphemy to their other impieties, attempting to obscure the manifest testimony of our Savior's epiphany by denying the prophecy; but they will gain nothing by denying this prophecy; for both the other prophets testify, and the events themselves cry out, seizing the prophecies concerning him. And that the Jews of old called the blessed Daniel a very great prophet, a worthy witness is Josephus the Hebrew, who did not accept the Christian proclamation, but could not bear to hide the truth. He, in the tenth book of the Jewish Antiquities, said many other things about the blessed Daniel, and adds these as well: "For all things," he says, "were granted to him wondrously, as to one of the greatest prophets, and throughout his lifetime honor and glory from kings and the multitude; and having died, he has an everlasting memory. For the books, which he wrote and left behind, are read among us even now, and from them we have believed that Daniel spoke with God. For he did not only continue to prophesy future events, like the other prophets, but he also determined the time in which these things would come to pass." And after a short while, "And from the outcome," he says, "of the prophecies' truth he carries off from the crowds faith and the reputation of divinity." And in succession he says countless such things about him. Likewise also in the twelfth book of the Antiquities he speaks thus again: "And the desolation of the temple happened to come about according to the prophecy of Daniel, which was made four hundred and eight years before; for he showed that the Macedonians would destroy it." And Josephus testifies these things for the prophet. But the Jews, suffering from every impudence, are not even ashamed of their own teachers. But let us, I exhort you, having received the foreknowledge of future things from a prophet of God, prepare ourselves for 81.1545 that fearful day, so that we may not rise to everlasting shame, but to everlasting life; which may it be for all of us to attain, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom be glory to the Father, with the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Οὗτος ἐν τῷ δεκάτῳ τῆς Ἰουδαϊκῆς Ἀρχαιολογίας, πολλὰ μὲν καὶ ἕτερα περὶ τοῦ μακαρίου εἴρηκε ∆ανιὴλ, προστίθησι δὲ καὶ ταῦτα· "Ἅπαντα γὰρ αὐτῷ, φησὶν, παραδόξως, ὡς ἑνί τινι τῶν μεγίστων ἐχαρίσθη προφητῶν, καὶ παρὰ τὸν τῆς ζωῆς χρόνον τιμή τε καὶ δόξα, ἡ παρὰ τῶν βασιλέων καὶ τοῦ πλήθους· τελευτήσας δὲ μνήμην αἰώνιον ἔχει. Τὰ γὰρ βιβλία, ὅσα δὴ συγγραψάμενος κατέλιπεν, ἀναγινώσκεται παρ' ἡμῖν ἔτι καὶ νῦν, καὶ πεπιστεύκαμεν ἐξ αὐτῶν, ὅτι ∆ανιὴλ ὡμίλει τῷ Θεῷ. Οὐ γὰρ τὰ μέλλοντα μόνον προφητεύων διετέλει, καθάπερ καὶ οἱ ἄλλοι προφῆται, ἀλλὰ καὶ τὸν καιρὸν ὥρισεν εἰς ὃν ταῦτα ἀποβήσεται." Καὶ μετὰ βραχέα δὲ, "Ἀπὸ δὲ τοῦ τέλους, φησὶ, τῶν προῤῥήσεων ἀληθείας πίστιν καὶ δόξαν θειότητος παρὰ τοῖς ὄχλοις ἀποφέρεται." Καὶ ἐφεξῆς δὲ μυρία τοιαῦτα περὶ αὐτοῦ λέγει. Ὡσαύτως δὲ καὶ ἐν τῇ δωδεκάτῃ τῆς Ἀρχαιολογίας πάλιν οὕτω φησί· "Τὴν δὲ ἐρήμωσιν τοῦ ναοῦ συνέβη γενέσθαι κατὰ τὴν τοῦ ∆ανιήλου προφητείαν, πρὸ τετρακοσίων καὶ ὀκτὼ γενομένην ἐτῶν· ἔδειξε γὰρ ὅτι Μακεδόνες καταλύσουσιν αὐτόν." Καὶ ταῦτα μὲν ὁ Ἰώσηππος τῷ προφήτῃ προσμαρτυρεῖ. Ἰουδαῖοι δὲ, πᾶσαν ἀναισχυντίαν νοσοῦντες, οὐδὲ τοὺς ἑαυτῶν αἰσχύνονται διδασκάλους. Ἀλλ' ἡμεῖς, παρακαλῶ, ὡς παρὰ Θεοῦ προφήτου τὴν τῶν μελλόντων δεξάμενοι πρόγνωσιν, εὐτρεπεῖς ἡμᾶς αὐτοὺς εἰς 81.1545 ἐκείνην τὴν φοβερὰν καταστήσωμεν ἡμέραν, ἵνα μὴ εἰς αἰσχύνην αἰώνιον, ἀλλ' εἰς ζωὴν ἀναστῶμεν αἰώνιον· ἧς γένοιτο πάντας ἡμᾶς ἐπιτυχεῖν, χάριτι καὶ φιλανθρωπίᾳ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν· Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, μεθ' οὗ τῷ Πατρὶ δόξα, σὺν τῷ ἁγίῳ Πνεύματι, νῦν καὶ ἀεὶ, καὶ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων.
