arguing, what sort of sanctification did the impious king of Tyre have? But they would not be able to show it. But this one, about whom the discourse is now, when he was one of the holy archangels, was in participation of all holiness; but he himself profaned the sanctification, having engaged in evil trade, and desiring more, he fell from what was given. 81.1100 This he also prepared for man to suffer. For that one, having been made in the image of God, being led astray by his prattling words and desiring to become God, also lost the being an image of God. "And I will bring forth a fire from the midst of thee." This fits both, the one who worked the evil, and the king of the Tyrians who was worked upon; for both provided the occasions for the punishment brought upon them. Such is what was said through the prophet Isaiah to the Jews: "Behold, all ye that kindle a fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that ye have kindled." And here therefore it says: "I will bring forth a fire from the midst of thee. It shall devour thee." That is, I will use your own transgressions as material for the punishments against you. "And I will bring thee to ashes upon thy earth in the sight of all them that behold thee." And this fits both. For man, having fallen in his own land, became dust, and the devil, thinking to rule the world, having been overthrown by our God and Savior, is trampled like ash by the pious. 19. And all that know thee among the nations shall be astonished at thee. For those still abiding in your servitude, seeing the cessation of the idols, and their temples utterly destroyed, live in dejection, being disheartened and continually distressed. "Thou hast become a destruction, and shalt be no more for ever." Through these words he declared his complete destruction. Thus having completed the lament for Tyre, he moves on to Sidon, and since it is a neighbor, he also briefly foretells the things that will happen to it. 20-23. And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying: Son of man, set thy face against Sidon, and prophesy against it. And say: Thus saith Adonai the Lord; Behold, I am against thee, O Sidon; and I will be glorified in thee: and thou shalt know that I am the Lord, when I shall have executed judgments in thee, and shall be sanctified in thee. And I will send upon thee death, and blood in thy streets; and the wounded shall fall in the midst of thee by swords in thee, and round about thee; and they shall know that I am the Lord. Since, he says, being in prosperity you were ignorant of me, O Sidon, I will surround you with many and various evils, with famine, and the slaughters of enemies, so that through misfortunes you may learn my lordship. He also states the causes of the destruction. 24. And there shall be no more to the house of Israel a pricking brier, nor a grieving thorn, of all that are round about them, that despised them; and they shall know that I am Adonai the Lord. These things, he says, I will bring both upon Tyre, and upon the foreign 81.1101 tribes, and upon all those dwelling in the neighborhood, so that my people may have neither you as an archetype of impiety, nor enemies constantly attacking them and continually vexing them. Thus having prophesied the grievous things, he prophesies good things for Israel, intensifying the grievous things for those others; for being hostilely disposed, they made Israel's prosperity an occasion for pain. 25-26. Thus saith Adonai the Lord: And I will gather the house of Israel from the nations where they have been scattered there, and I will be sanctified in them before the peoples and the nations, and they shall dwell in their own land, which I gave to my servant Jacob. And they shall dwell therein in hope, and they shall build houses, and plant vineyards, and shall dwell in hope, when I execute judgments on all that despised them round about them; and they shall know that I am the Lord their God, and the God of their fathers. God, the Lord of all, does not discipline all sinners in the same way, but those who are his own he disciplines medically, while the others judicially. Wherefore also the prophet said in prayer: "Discipline us, O Lord, but with judgment, and not in anger."
