And they, with great shouting and tumult, brought both the 2.27.39 towers and the other engines to the wall and set up the ladders, as if to take the city by a single 2.27.40 shout. But with the Romans shooting many missiles and defending themselves with all their might, the barbarians were turned back decisively, and as Chosroes retreated, the Romans jeered him, challenging him to a wall-fight. 2.27.41 But Azarethes alone, with his followers, was fighting around the gates called Soinian, where indeed they call the place 2.27.42 Tripyrgia. But since the Romans there were no match for them, and indeed were giving up against their attacks, the barbarians, having already broken through the outer wall, which they call the proteichisma, in many places, were pressing most strongly against those defending from the great circuit wall, until Peranius came out against them with many soldiers and some of the Edessenes and, conquering them in battle, drove them 2.27.43 out. And the wall-fight, having begun in the morning, ended late in the afternoon, and both sides remained quiet that night, the Persians fearing for their palisades and for themselves, and the Romans collecting stones for the battlements and making all other preparations, as if on the next day they would fight the enemy attacking 2.27.44 the wall. So on the following day, none of the barbarians came to the circuit wall, but on the day after that, a portion of the army, at the urging of Chosroes, attacked the gates called Barlaon's, but when the Romans met them, they were greatly defeated in the battle and shortly withdrew to their 2.27.45 camp. And then Paul, the interpreter of the Persians, came to the wall and called for Martin, in order that he might arrange the matters 2.27.46 for the treaty. And so when Martin came to terms with the Persian commanders, they made an agreement, and Chosroes, having received five centenaria from the Edessenes, left them a written agreement to do no further harm to the Romans, and burning all the palisades, he withdrew homeward with his whole army. 2.28.1 About this time two Roman generals died, Justus the emperor's nephew and Peranius the Iberian, Justus having perished from disease, while it happened that Peranius, having fallen from his horse in a 2.28.2 hunt, was ruptured. Wherefore the emperor appointed others in their place and sent Marcellus, his own nephew who was just growing a beard, and Constantianus, who a little before had been sent with Sergius on an embassy to 2.28.3 Chosroes. But Chosroes said it was not easy for them to come to an agreement with each other, unless they first established a truce, and so, by visiting each other more fearlessly, they might settle their differences and for the future place the terms of the peace on a secure 2.28.8 footing. And he said it was necessary that for this continuous truce the Roman emperor should give him money and send a certain physician named Tribunus, so that 2.28.9 he might stay with him for a fixed time. For it happened that this physician had previously freed him from a severe illness and was for this reason a most special and longed-for 2.28.10 friend. When the Emperor Justinian heard this, he immediately sent both Tribunus and the money, amounting to twenty 2.28.11 centenaria. And so the truce
