of those opposing. Whether, then, the opinion did not exist from the beginning, or having existed was again cast out, let us know quickly; but if, which may it not be, the same plans remain, let the misfortune come to us self-announced, for we need no letters.
117.τ WITHOUT SUPERSCRIPTION, ON THE ASCETIC LIFE
117.1 I think that I am otherwise indebted to your Honour, and now this present care in which we are engaged necessarily makes us responsible for services in such matters, even if ordinary people are the ones commanding, not to mention you who are joined to us by many other just claims. It is not necessary, then, to bring the past under examination, since it was possible to say that we ourselves became the cause of our troubles, having contentiously resolved to abandon that good training which alone leads to salvation; for which reason, perhaps, we were also delivered over to this trouble for a trial. But those things have happened and have been deemed worthy of remembrance, so that we may not a second time fall into similar circumstances. As to what follows, I very much wish your Reverence to be fully assured that, with God's permission, it will very easily come over to our side, since the matter is both lawful and has nothing burdensome, and since many of our friends in the camp are ready to oblige us. A petition will therefore be drawn up by us in accordance with the form of the petition presented to the vicar, in which, if there is no delay, we shall immediately send off the permission which we grant by letter. And I am persuaded that in such matters our will is stronger than imperial commands; and if we show this will to be unchangeable and unswerving from the life of our prime, the guarding of our virginity would be, with God's help, unassailable and inviolable for us. And the brother entrusted to us by you we have both seen with pleasure and hold among our acquaintances, praying that he may be worthy of God and of your testimony.
118.τ TO IOVINUS, BISHOP OF PERRHE
118.1 I have you as a debtor for a good debt. For I lent you a debt of love, which I must receive back with interest, since our Lord also does not refuse this kind of interest. Pay it back, then, O dear friend, by visiting our fatherland. This, then, is the principal itself. And what is the addition? That you, the man who is coming, are as much superior to us as fathers are better than their children.
119.τ TO EUSTATHIUS, BISHOP OF SEBASTEIA
119.1 Through our most revered and devout brother Peter I address your love, exhorting you on every occasion and now to pray for me, that being changed from this abominable and harmful way of life, I may someday become worthy of the name of Christ. But in any case, even if I do not say it, you will converse with one another about our affairs and he will make known to you the exact details of what has been done, so that the evil suspicions against us may not be accepted without examination, suspicions which those are likely to fabricate who have insulted us, contrary to the fear of God and the opinion of men. For what things the noble Basilius showed us, whom I received from your Reverence as a safeguard for my life, I am ashamed even to say, but you will know the details
