of the spirit". And Lucius said: "From where do you conjecture these things", he said, "that you say?" And he said: "I do not conjecture, but I know clearly; for you fight against the apostolic doctrines and utter contrary things, and the unlawful deeds concur with your blasphemous words. For what impious man on account of you has not reviled the ecclesiastical assemblies? Who of the praiseworthy men has not been driven out? What barbarian savagery have the things dared by you each day not concealed?" These things the one said courageously, but the other, seething with murder, heard; and though he longed for slaughter, he feared lest he might again kindle the war that had ceased. For which reason indeed he ordered him to be brought to other bishops whom that one had requested. Having received the high-priestly grace with this admirable faith, he went to those who had requested him and with the apostolic 262 teachings and miracles he guided them to the truth. In Alexandria, therefore, such things were dared by Lucius and were ordained by divine providence. But in Constantinople, those of the unholy faction, having filled a vessel with pious presbyters, let it go unballasted into the open sea; then, having embarked some of their accomplices on another ferry-boat, they ordered them to set fire to the vessel of the presbyters. When this was done, battling with fire and sea, they were at last sent to the deep and bound on the crown of martyrdom. And in Antioch, Valens, having spent a very long time, had given license to all, both Greeks and Jews and the others who, bearing the name of Christians, preach things contrary to the evangelical teachings. For indeed those enslaved to error performed the Greek rites, and he allowed the deceit, which after Julian had been extinguished by Jovian, to flourish again; and they did not fulfill the Diasia and the Dionysia and the orgies of Demeter in a corner as in a pious reign, but ran raving through the middle of the marketplace. But he was an enemy only to those who held to the apostolic teaching. For first he drove them out of the sacred 263 houses; for the all-praised Jovian had given them also the newly built church. But when, coming together at the foot of the mountain, they both honored the Master with hymns and enjoyed the divine oracles, enduring the contrary assaults of the air, sometimes of rain and snow and frost, and at other times of most violent heat, he did not allow them to partake even of this laborious benefit, but sending soldiers, he dispersed them. But Flavian and Diodorus, like certain breakwaters, broke the assailing waves. For with Meletius their shepherd being forced to live far away, these men took care of the flock, opposing to the wolves their own courage and wisdom, and offering to the sheep the fitting care. Therefore, having been driven out from the foot of the mountain, they pastured the sheep by the banks of the neighboring river. For they did not endure, like the captives in Babylon, to "hang up their instruments," but they hymned the maker and benefactor "in every place of his dominion." But the enemy only of those who theologized Christ the Master did not even bear the assembly of the pious in this place. So again, therefore, the pair of those wonderful under-shepherds, gathering the divine sheep into the military gymnasium, showed them the spiritual pasture. And Dio- 264 dorus, the most wise and most courageous, like some transparent and great river, on the one hand offered irrigation to his own, and on the other hand flooded the blasphemies of his opponents. And on the one hand he did not reckon the nobility of his family, but on the other hand he gladly endured hardship for the faith. But Flavian the best, himself also descended from noblemen, considered piety alone to be nobility, and like some trainer, he anointed the great Diodorus as if he were a pentathlete. For at that time he did not speak publicly in the ecclesiastical assemblies, but to those doing this much
