For he is seen by the worthy; but the full one is not seen, but he is seen invisibly, like a ray of the sun alone, and he happens to be graspable to them, being ungraspable in essence. The ray is indeed seen, but the sun rather blinds, and his ray is graspable to you, as we said, ungraspably. Therefore, according to this I say: what I have, who will give me? This whole thing, clearly, who will show me what I see? For I see the ray, but I do not see the sun. But does not the ray both seem to you and is seen as the sun? Seeing this, I long to see the whole begetter; Thus seeing, I say again: who will show me him whom I see? (179) Having all the rays again inside the house, I say again: where will I find the source of the rays? But the ray, another source, clearly exists in me; O strange wonder of wonders! Above the sun shines forth, but the ray of the sun again appears to me as another sun on earth and illuminates; the second is truly like the first. Having this one, I say I have, but seeing the other one far from me, I cry out likewise: Who will give me him whom I have? For they are not cut off from one another, nor are they separated at all, and they stand apart ineffably. Compared to the whole, how much do I have? A single grain or a spark! And I seek to receive the whole, even if I have the whole completely. How the whole, what are you saying to me? You are jesting as if with foolish men;

ὅλον σε πεπληρωμένον. Καθορᾶται γάρ ἀξίοις˙ οὐχ ὁρᾶται δέ ὁ πλήρης, ἀλλ᾿ ὁρᾶται ἀοράτως, ὡς ἀκτίς ἡλίου μόνη, καί ληπτός αὐτοῖς τυγχάνει, ἄληπτος ὤν κατ᾿ οὐσίαν. Ἡ ἀκτίς μέν καθορᾶται, ἥλιος τυφλοῖ δέ μᾶλλον, καί ἀκτίς αὐτοῦ ληπτή σοι ὥσπερ εἴπομεν, ἀλήπτως. Κατά τοῦτο τοίνυν λέγω˙ ὅπερ ἔχων, τίς μοι δώσει; Ὅλον τοῦτο δηλονότι τίς, ὅ βλέπω, ὑποδείξει; Τήν ἀκτῖνα καί γάρ βλέπω, τόν δέ ἥλιον οὐ βλέπω. Ἡ δ᾿ ἀκτίς οὐχ ἥλιός σοι καί δοκεῖ καί καθορᾶται; Ταύτην βλέπων ὅλον βλέψαι τόν γεννήτορα ποθῶ γε˙ Οὕτως βλέπων λέγω πάλιν˙ τίς μοι δείξει, ὅνπερ βλέπω; (179) Τάς ἀκτῖνας ἔχων αὖθις ὅλας ἔνδον τῆς οἰκίας, λέγω πάλιν˙ ποῦ εὑρήσω τήν πηγήν τήν τῶν ἀκτίνων; Ἡ δ᾿ ἀκτίς πηγή δ᾿ αὖ ἄλλη ἐν ἐμοί σαφῶς ὑπάρχει˙ ὤ θαῦμα θαυμάτων ξένον! Ἄνω ἥλιος ἐκλάμπει , ἡ δ᾿ ἀκτίς ἡλίου αὖθις ἄλλος ἥλιος ἐν γῆς μοι φαίνεται καί καταυγάζει˙ ὅμοιος ὄντως τοῦ πρώτου καί ὁ δεύτερος ὑπάρχει. Τοῦτον ἔχων λέγω ἔχειν, τόν δέ ἄλλον μου μακρόθεν καθορῶν ὡσαύτως κράζω˙ Τίς μοι δώσει, ὅνπερ ἔχω; Οὐ γάρ τέτμηνται ἀλλήλων, οὐ χωρίζονται δέ ὅλως, καί διΐστανται ἀφράστως. Πρός τόν ὅλον πόσον ἔχω; Κόκκον ἕνα ἤ σπινθῆρα! Καί ζητῶ λαβεῖν τό ὅλον, εἰ καί ὅλον πάντως ἔχω. Πῶς τό ὄλον, τί μοι λέγεις; Ὡς πρός ἄφρονας προσπαίζεις˙
