But answer my question. What is the Holy Spirit? God, from true God, confessedly true God. You, then, as you see, call this God, following the dogmas of the Church. Therefore, in saying and thinking this, that He is true God proceeding from true God, you establish that those who have the Holy Spirit confessedly have that very God abiding always with them, just as Christ said to the apostles: "If you love me, you will keep my commandments; and I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, to be with you for ever." Behold, then, you have been taught that He both abides and dwells for unending ages; for to say "to be with you for ever" means that He will be with them eternally and unendingly and be inseparable from them both in the present time and in the age to come. And that the divine apostles and all who were worthy to receive it also saw the Holy Spirit, listen to what follows: "The Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, (221) because it neither sees him nor knows him; you know him, for he dwells with you." And that you may know that those who love Christ and keep his commandments also see him, listen to the Lord himself saying: "He who has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me; and he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him."

Therefore, let it be known to all Christians that Christ is true and is true God, and to those who show love for him through the keeping of his commandments, he is confessedly manifested, just as he himself said; and through his manifestation he bestows upon them the Holy Spirit itself, and again through the Holy Spirit, he and the Father abide inseparably with them. Such people speak nothing of themselves; but he who says they speak anything of themselves, says it is possible for a man to know the things of man, and likewise for men to know the things of God; but if not this, then he calls them liars and myth-makers, as not being taught by him, but teaching others from their own reasonings about things they have not seen or heard. But it is necessary to know that if these men also speak in harmony with the God-bearing fathers who came before, they clearly speak in the same Spirit, and those who disbelieve them or slander them sin against the One who speaks through them.

You have been taught, then, beloved, that the kingdom of heaven is within you, if you wish, and all eternal good things are in your hands. Hasten, then, to see and to receive and to possess within yourself the good things laid up for you, and do not, by thinking you have them, be deprived of them all; (222) weep, fall down, just as the blind man once did, so now you too, and say: "Have mercy on me, Son of God, and open the eyes of my soul, that I may see the light of the world, you, O God, and that I too may become a son of the divine day; and do not, Good One, leave me bereft of your divinity, as one unworthy. Manifest yourself to me, Lord, that I may know that you have loved me, as one who has kept your divine commandments, Master. Send the Comforter, O merciful One, also upon me, that he may teach me the things concerning you and announce to me your things, O God of all. Shine upon me the true light, O compassionate One, that I may see your glory, which you had with your Father before the world was made. Abide, as you said, in me also. Be willing, O invisible One, to be formed in me, that seeing your ineffable beauty, your image, O heavenly One, I may wear your likeness and forget all visible things. Give me the glory which the Father has given you, O compassionate One, that I may become like you, as all your servants are, a god by grace, and I will be with you perpetually, now and ever and unto endless ages, amen."

Ἀλλ᾿ ἐρωτῶντί μοι ἀποκρίθητι. Τό Πνεῦμα τό Ἅγιον τί ἐστι; Θεός, ἐκ Θεοῦ ἀληθινοῦ ὁμολογουμένως Θεός ἀληθινός. Σύ οὖν, ὡς ὁρᾷς, λέγεις τοῦτο Θεόν, τοῖς δόγμασι τῆς Ἐκκλησίας ἑπόμενος. Τοῦτο τοίνυν λέγων τε καί φρονῶν Θεόν ἀληθινόν ἐκ Θεοῦ ἀληθινοῦ ἐκπορευόμενον, συνιστᾷς ὅτι οἱ τό Ἅγιον ἔχοντες Πνεῦμα αὐτόν ἐκεῖνον ὁμολογουμένως ἔχουσι τόν Θεόν μένοντα πάντοτε μεθ᾿ ἑαυτῶν, καθώς πρός τούς ἀποστόλους ὁ Χριστός ἔφη· "Ἐάν ἀγαπᾶτέ με, τάς ἐντολάς τάς ἐμάς τηρήσετε· καί ἐγώ ἐρωτήσω τόν Πατέρα καί ἄλλον παράκλητον δώσει ὑμῖν, ἵνα μένῃ μεθ᾿ ὑμῶν εἰς τόν αἰῶνα". Ἰδού οὖν ἐδιδάχθης ὅτι καί μένει καί κατοικεῖ εἰς ἀτελευτήτους αἰῶνας· τό γάρ εἰπεῖν "ἵνα μένῃ μεθ᾿ ὑμῶν εἰς τόν αἰῶνα" τό ἀϊδίως καί ἀτελευτήτως αὐτοῖς συνέσεσθαι καί εἶναι ἀχώριστον μετ᾿ αὐτῶν ἔν τε τῷ νῦν καιρῷ, ἔν τε τῷ μέλλοντι αἰῶνι δηλοῖ. Ὅτι δέ καί ἑώρων τό Ἁγιον Πνεῦμα οἱ θεῖοι ἀπόστολοι καί ὅσοι τοῦτο λαβεῖν ἠξιώθησαν, ἄκουσον τό ἑπόμενον· "Τό Πνεῦμα τῆς ἀληθείας ὅ ὁ κόσμος οὐ δύναται λαβεῖν, (221) ὅτι οὐ θεωρεῖ αὐτό οὔτε γινώσκει αὐτό, ὑμεῖς δέ γινώσκετε αὐτό, ὅτι παρ᾿ ὑμῖν μένει". Ἵνα δέ γνῷς ὅτι καί τόν Χριστόν βλέπουσιν οἱ ἀγαπῶντες αὐτόν καί τάς ἐντολάς αὐτοῦ φυλάσσοντες, αὐτοῦ τοῦ Κυρίου ἄκουσον λέγοντος· "Ὁ ἔχων τάς ἐντολάς μου καί τηρῶν αὐτάς, ἐκεῖνός ἐστιν ὁ ἀγαπῶν με· ὁ δέ ἀγαπῶν με ἀγαπηθήσεται ὑπό τοῦ πατρός μου, καί ἐγώ ἀγαπήσω αὐτόν καί ἐμφανίσω αὐτῷ ἐμαυτόν".

Γνωστόν τοιγαροῦν ἔστω πᾶσι χριστιανοῖς ὅτι ὁ Χριστός ἀψευδής καί Θεός ἀληθινός ἐστι καί τοῖς τήν πρός αὐτόν ἀγάπην διά τῆς τηρήσεως τῶν ἐντολῶν αὐτοῦ ἐνδεικνυμένοις ὁμολογουμένως ἐμφανίζεται, καθώς εἶπεν αὐτός· αὐτό τε τό Ἅγιον Πνεῦμα διά τῆς ἐμφανείας αὐτοῦ δωρεῖται αὐτοῖς καί διά τοῦ Ἁγίου πάλιν Πνεύματος αὐτός καί ὁ Πατήρ ἀχωρίστως μένουσιν μετ᾿ αὐτῶν. Οἱ δέ τοιοῦτοι ἀφ᾿ ἑαυτῶν λαλοῦσιν οὐδέν· ὁ δέ λέγων λαλεῖν αὐτούς τι ἀφ᾿ ἑαυτῶν, δυνατόν εἶναι λέγει εἰδέναι καί ἄνθρωπον τά τοῦ ἀνθρώπου καί ἀνθρώπους ὡσαύτως τά τοῦ Θεοῦ· εἰ δέ μή τοῦτο, ἀλλά ψεύστας καί μυθολόγους ἀποκαλεῖ, ὡς μή ἐξ αὐτοῦ διδασκομένους, ἀλλά περί ὧν οὐκ εἶδον ἤ ἤκουσαν ἀπό οἰκείων συλλογισμῶν ἑτέρους διδάσκοντας. Ἀλλά χρεών εἰδέναι, ὅτι, εἰ συνᾴδοντα καί οὗτοι τοῖς προλαβοῦσι θεοφόροις πατράσι φθέγγονται, ἐν τῷ αὐτῷ Πνεύματι καί αὐτοί δηλονότι φθέγγονται καί οἱ αὐτοῖς ἀπιστοῦντες ἤ καί ἐνδιαβάλλοντες εἰς τόν δι᾿ αὐτῶν φθεγγόμενον ἁμαρτάνουσιν.

Ἐδιδάχθης τοίνυν, ἀγαπητέ, ὅτι ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν ἐντός σου, εἰ θέλεις, ἐστί καί τά αἰώνια ἅπαντα ἀγαθά ἐν χερσί σου εἰσί. Σπεῦσον οὖν ἰδεῖν καί λαβεῖν καί ἐν σεαυτῷ κτήσασθαι τά ἀποκείμενα ἀγαθά καί μή διά τοῦ οἴεσθαι ταῦτα ἔχειν ἀποστερηθήσῃ πάντων αὐτῶν· (222) κλαῦσον, πρόσπεσον, ὥσπερ ποτέ ὁ τυφλός, οὕτω καί νῦν καί σύ καί εἰπέ· "Ἐλέησόν με, Υἱέ τοῦ Θεοῦ, καί διάνοιξόν μου τούς ὀφθαλμούς τῆς ψυχῆς, ἵνα ἴδω τό φῶς τοῦ κόσμου, σέ τόν Θεόν, καί γενήσομαι υἱός ἡμέρας θείας κἀγώ· καί μή ἄμοιρον, ὡς ἀνάξιον, τῆς σῆς θεότητος καταλείψῃς με, Ἀγαθέ. Ἐμφάνισόν μοι, Κύριε, σεαυτόν, ἵνα γνώσωμαι ὅτι ἠγάπησάς με, ὡς τάς θείας τηρήσαντά σου, ∆έσποτα, ἐντολάς. Πέμψον τόν παράκλητον, οἰκτίρμον, καί ἐπ᾿ ἐμοί, ἵνα αὐτός με διδάξῃ τά περί σοῦ καί τά σά ἀναγγείλῃ μοι, ὦ Θεέ τοῦ παντός. Λάμψον ἐπ᾿ ἐμοί τό φῶς τό ἀληθινόν, εὔσπλαγχνε, ἵνα ἴδω τήν δόξαν τήν σήν, ἥν εἶχες πρό τοῦ τόν κόσμον γενέσθαι παρά τῷ σῷ Πατρί. Μεῖνον, ὡς εἶπας, καί ἐν ἐμοί. Μορφωθῆναι θέλησον, ἀόρατε, ἐν ἐμοί, ἵνα βλέπων τό ἀμήχανον κάλλος σου, τήν εἰκόνα, ἐπουράνιε, φορέσω τήν σήν καί πάντα τά ὁρατά ἐπιλάθωμαι. ∆ός μοι τήν δόξαν ἥν σοι δέδωκεν, εὔσπλαγχνε, ὁ Πατήρ, ἵνα ὅμοιός σοι ὡς πάντες οἱ δοῦλοί σου γένωμαι κατά χάριν θεός καί συνέσομαί σοι διηνεκῶς νῦν καί ἀεί καί εἰς ἀπεράντους αἰῶνας, ἀμήν".
