What harm, then, came from this to God Himself and the Word, that you do not blush to blaspheme? But what? Is it better to confess these things, and to worship such a God, good and loving mankind, who commands justice, enjoins self-control, legislates purity, teaches mercy, provides faith, preaches peace, is named and is truth-itself, love-itself, goodness-itself; is it better to worship him or your gods, who are full of passions and evil, who are shameful both in their deeds and in their names? Woe to you, more stone-like than stones and more irrational than irrational beasts, sons of perdition, heirs of darkness; but blessed am I and all Christians, having a God who is good and loves mankind. For those who worship him, even if they suffer evil for a short time in the present life, 490 will yet harvest the immortal fruit of recompense in the kingdom of endless and divine blessedness. xxxii Then Theudas said to him: Behold, it is clear that our religion was established by many and great wise men, and commentators, and men admirable for their virtue and knowledge, and all the kings of the earth and rulers have accepted it as good and having nothing erroneous, but that of the Galileans was preached by certain rustics, both poor and base men, and they themselves few in number and not exceeding the measure of twelve. How then is the preaching of the few, obscure and rustic men, to be preferred to the legislation of the many and great men who shone with so much wisdom? And what is the proof that these men speak the truth, and those men lie? Then the king's son answered again: Perhaps, Theudas, you are, as the saying goes, an ass hearing a lyre and remaining without understanding, or rather an asp stopping its ears so as not to hear the voice of the charmers. Well then did the prophet say concerning you: if an Ethiopian will change his skin and a leopard its spots, then you also will be able to do good, having learned evil. Fool and blind man, how does the strength of the truth not bring you to your senses? For this very fact that your abominable objects of worship 492 are praised by many admired for their wisdom, and strengthened by many kings, while the preaching of the Gospel was proclaimed by a few obscure men, shows the strength of our piety and the weakness and deadliness of your wicked doctrines; because your things, even having wise advocates and powerful supporters, are nevertheless extinguished and grow weak, but the things of piety, possessing no human aid, shine more brightly than the sun and have taken hold of the fullness of the world. For if it had been set forth by orators and philosophers, and had kings and rulers as collaborators, you, the wicked one, would have found occasion to say that the whole thing came to be by human power; but now, seeing that the holy Gospel was composed by humble fishermen, was persecuted by all tyrants, and after this took possession of the world (for its sound went out into all the earth, and its words to the ends of the world), what could you say, except that it is a divine and invincible power confirming its own things for the salvation of men? And what proof do you seek, foolish one, that yours are false, but ours are true, that is better than what has been said? For if all your things were not nonsense and a lie, they would not, having such great strength from men, be diminished and grow weak. For I saw, he says, the ungodly highly exalted and lifted up like the cedars of Lebanon; and I passed by, and behold, he was not, and I sought him, and his place was not found. The Prophet has spoken these things concerning you, the 494 champions of idolatry. For yet a little while and your place shall not be found, but, as smoke vanishes,

τίς οὖν αὐτῷ τῷ Θεῷ καὶ λόγῳ προσεγένετο ἐντεῦθεν βλάβη, ὅτι βλασφημεῖν οὐκ ἐρυθριᾷς; τί δέ; βέλτιον ταῦτα ὁμολογεῖν, καὶ τοιοῦτον σέβεσθαι Θεόν, ἀγαθὸν καὶ φιλάνθρωπον, ὃς ἐντέλλεται δικαιοσύνην, ἐγκράτειαν ἐπιτάσσει, καθαρότητα νομοθετεῖ, ἐλεεῖν διδάσκει, πίστιν παρέχει, εἰρήνην κηρύσσει, αὐτοαλήθεια ὀνομάζεται καὶ ἔστιν, αὐτοαγάπη, αὐτοαγαθότης· τοῦτον βέλτιον σέβεσθαι ἢ τοὺς θεούς σου, τοὺς πολυπαθεῖς καὶ κακούς, τοὺς αἰσχροὺς καὶ τοῖς πράγμασι καὶ τοῖς ὀνόμασιν; οὐαὶ ὑμῖν, τῶν λίθων λιθωδέστεροι καὶ τῶν ἀλόγων ἀλογώτεροι, τῆς ἀπωλείας υἱοί, τοῦ σκότους κληρονόμοι· μακάριος δὲ ἐγὼ καὶ πάντες οἱ Χριστιανοί, Θεὸν ἔχοντες ἀγαθὸν καὶ φιλάνθρωπον. οἱ γὰρ αὐτῷ λατρεύοντες, κἂν ὀλίγον χρόνον ἐν τῷ νῦν βίῳ κακο 490 παθήσωσιν, ἀλλὰ τὸν ἀθάνατον τῆς ἀνταποδόσεως καρπὸν τρυγήσουσιν ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τῆς ἀτελευτήτου καὶ θείας μακαριότητος. χχχιι Ἔφη δὲ πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ Θευδᾶς· Ἰδοὺ φανερόν ἐστιν, ὅτι τὴν καθ' ἡμᾶς θρησκείαν πολλοὶ καὶ μεγάλοι σοφοί, καὶ ἐξηγηταί, καὶ θαυμαστοὶ τὴν ἀρετὴν καὶ ἐπιστήμην, ἐνομοθέτησαν, καὶ πάντες οἱ βασιλεῖς τῆς γῆς καὶ δυνάσται ὡς καλὴν καὶ μηδὲν σφαλερὸν ἔχουσαν ἐδέξαντο, τὴν δὲ τῶν Γαλιλαίων ἄγροικοί τινες, πτωχοί τε καὶ εὐτελεῖς ἐκήρυξαν ἄνδρες, καὶ αὐτοὶ εὐαρίθμητοι καὶ μὴ τῶν δώδεκα τὸ μέτρον ὑπερβαίνοντες. πῶς οὖν τῶν ὀλίγων, ἀσήμων τε καὶ ἀγροίκων, τὸ κήρυγμα προτιμητέον τῆς τῶν πολλῶν καὶ μεγάλων καὶ σοφίᾳ τοσαύτῃ λαμψάντων νομοθεσίας; τίς δὲ ἡ ἀπόδειξις τούτους ἀληθεύειν, κἀκείνους ψεύδεσθαι; Αὖθις οὖν ὁ τοῦ βασιλέως υἱὸς ἀπεκρίνατο· Τάχα, Θευδᾶ, ὄνος εἶ, τὸ τοῦ λόγου, λύρας ἀκούων καὶ ἀσύνετος μένων, μᾶλλον δὲ ἀσπὶς βύων τὰ ὦτα τοῦ μὴ ἀκοῦσαι φωνῆς ἐπᾳδόντων. καλῶς οὖν ὁ προφήτης εἶπε περὶ σοῦ· εἰ ἀλλάξεται Αἰθίοψ τὸ δέρμα αὐτοῦ καὶ πάρδαλις τὰ ποικίλματα αὐτῆς, καὶ σὺ δυνήσῃ εὖ ποιῆσαι μεμαθηκὼς κακά. μωρὲ καὶ τυφλέ, πῶς οὐκ ἄγει σε εἰς αἴσθησιν ἡ τῆς ἀληθείας ἰσχύς; τοῦτο γὰρ αὐτὸ τὸ παρὰ πολλῶν μὲν ἐπὶ σοφίᾳ θαυμαζομένων ἐπαινεῖσθαι τὰ μιαρά σου σεβά 492 σματα, παρὰ πολλῶν δὲ βασιλέων κρατύνεσθαι, τὸ δὲ κήρυγμα τοῦ Εὐαγγελίου παρ' ὀλίγων καὶ ἀσήμων ἀνδρῶν κηρυχθῆναι, δεικνύει τῆς ἡμῶν θεοσεβείας τὴν ἰσχὺν καὶ τῶν ὑμετέρων πονηρῶν δογμάτων τὸ ἀσθενὲς καὶ ὀλέθριον· ὅτι τὰ μὲν ὑμέτερα, καὶ συνηγόρους ἔχοντα σοφοὺς καὶ ἀντιλήπτορας ἰσχυρούς, ὅμως σβέννυται καὶ ἀσθενεῖ, τὰ δὲ τῆς θεοσεβείας, μηδεμίαν ἀνθρωπίνην κεκτημένα βοήθειαν, λάμπει τηλαυγέστερον ἡλίου καὶ τοῦ κόσμου κατέσχε τὰ πληρώματα. εἰ μὲν γὰρ παρὰ ῥητόρων τε καὶ φιλοσόφων ἐξετέθη, βασιλεῖς δὲ καὶ δυνάστας εἶχε συνεργοῦντας, εὗρες ἂν σὺ ὁ πονηρὸς εἰπεῖν ἀνθρωπίνης δυνάμεως τὸ πᾶν γεγενῆσθαι· νυνὶ δέ, ὁρῶν παρὰ ἁλιέων μὲν εὐτελῶν τὸ ἅγιον συντεθὲν Εὐαγγέλιον, παρὰ πάντων δὲ τυράννων διωχθέν, καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο τὴν οἰκουμένην κατασχὸν (εἰς πᾶσαν γὰρ τὴν γῆν ἐξῆλθεν ὁ φθόγγος αὐτοῦ καὶ εἰς τὰ πέρατα τῆς οἰκουμένης τὰ ῥήματα αὐτοῦ), τί ἂν εἴποις, ἢ θείαν εἶναι καὶ ἄμαχον δύναμιν ἐπὶ σωτηρίᾳ τῶν ἀνθρώπων τὰ ἑαυτῆς βεβαιοῦσαν; τίνα δὲ ἀπόδειξιν ζητεῖς, ἀνόητε, τοῦ ψεύδεσθαι μὲν τοὺς σούς, ἀληθεύειν δὲ τοὺς ἡμετέρους, κρείττονα τῶν εἰρημένων; εἰ μὴ γὰρ λῆρος ἦν καὶ ψεῦδος πάντα τὰ σά, οὐκ ἄν, τοσαύτην ἔχοντα παρὰ ἀνθρώπων ἰσχύν, ἠλαττοῦτο καὶ ἐξησθένει. Εἶδον γάρ, φησί, τὸν ἀσεβῆ ὑπερυψούμενον καὶ ἐπαιρόμενον ὡς τὰς κέδρους τοῦ Λιβάνου· καὶ παρῆλθον, καὶ ἰδοὺ οὐκ ἦν, καὶ ἐζήτησα αὐτόν, καὶ οὐχ εὑρέθη ὁ τόπος αὐτοῦ. Περὶ ὑμῶν ταῦτα εἴρηκεν ὁ Προφήτης τῶν 494 ὑπασπιστῶν τῆς εἰδωλομανίας. μικρὸν γὰρ ὅσον ὅσον καὶ οὐ μὴ εὑρεθῇ ὁ τόπος ὑμῶν, ἀλλ', ὡς ἐκλείπει καπνός,
