we will kill our closest kin, and if we are defeated, it is necessary to die. All of which is not in our interest. If, then, these things seem good to you also; but if not, we at least will hand over both ourselves and the acropolis to the emperor.” Thus they spoke. But Lyzikos and all who were adherents of the elder emperor, not knowing what to do, along with the others requested amnesty if they had offended the emperor in any way, and having obtained it, they surrendered the acropolis. 54. And the emperor, having entered and taken custody of all who were of the 1.273 elder emperor’s faction, departed immediately. And having come to the palace, he deliberated with those in authority, both those who had arrived with him and those who were in Thessalonica, on where they should turn, since circumstances compelled them not to rest. Now all the others were advising to go to Beroea, but the Grand Domestic said to leave Beroea, and to go to Edessa, and from there to Kastoria. He also added the reasons, saying, that “since the Despot Demetrios and the Eparch Monomachos and Raoul Isaac have their wives and children among the Edessenes, it is likely that they will use every effort and device to seize it, both for the sake of their wives and children, and also because, as the town is small and strong both in its walls and the configuration of the site, it is easy to guard. And if they should succeed in seizing it first, it will not even so escape being captured by us, but it will present great difficulty and delay and toil in being besieged. But if we arrive now, the most powerful men there, who lead and carry the others wherever they wish, being long attached to me, will most easily surrender the town to us; or rather, even before we arrive there, if the emperor’s commands and my letters reach them, they will strive in every way to do what is ordered. And if any of the aforementioned men should arrive among them, they would not admit them. And as for Kastoria, which is itself most fortified because it is surrounded on all 1.274 sides by the lake, the *protovestiarios’* son-in-law, Angelos, is in command, who is very closely related to me by birth and owes me great goodwill and obedience, as I both raised him and taught him the arts of war; and because of his friendship for me, he would most easily betray the *protovestiarios*, his kinsman by marriage, and would surrender the city to us. And when we have taken these places, the people of Beroea will surrender of their own accord; and it seems to me, that even before these things are brought to a conclusion, they would come on the next day or the third to surrender the city.” When the Grand Domestic had given such counsel, the emperor immediately agreed, and the others voted with him, praising the counsel, and it was decided to go to Edessa. And immediately the commands of the emperor and letters of the Grand Domestic were sent by swift horsemen to Edessa and Kastoria. And Angelos, the governor of Kastoria, immediately held the city under guard, so that he might hand it over to the new emperor when he arrived. But the powerful men in Edessa, the Angeloi surnamed Radiporoi, being three brothers, and Laskaris, when they received the emperor’s commands, making no delay, since the people of Edessa also depended on their opinion, confined the empress, the wife of the Despot Demetrios, and the wife of the Eparch Monomachos, and the wife of Raoul in their houses, and kept them under guard, having posted a sentry. And a little later their husbands arrived, and when they found that the Edessenes had revolted from them and their wives were imprisoned, 1.275 they turned and fled to the ruler of the Triballi. For when they learned, while still in Pherae, that the emperor had turned onto the road leading to Thessalonica, they did not expect the city to surrender to him for even a moment, but for safety’s sake they sent the three hundred to hold the acropolis; but when they learned that Thessalonica had surrendered to the emperor, and of the three hundred, some had been killed and others taken captive by the imperial troops, being now stripped of all hope of safety, before the events became known to all, the
