Do not, then, by thus giving yourselves over to unbelief, descend into the abyss of destruction; but if even until now you have not hoped to receive a perception of such things and for this reason have asked for nothing, at least from the present be fully assured, first believing these things to be true and in harmony with the divine Scriptures, by going through all of them, that is, that from now on the seal of the Holy Spirit is given knowingly to us who believe. And having believed, so pursue that you may obtain, so box as not beating the air; and in addition to this, "ask, and it will be given to you; knock, and it will be opened to you," whether here or in the age to come. Meanwhile, be taught; meanwhile, repent, be submissive, fast, weep, pray; and so through these and similar things, run, box, pursue, seek, knock, ask, turning aside to nothing else, until you obtain, until you seize, until you receive, until it is opened to you and you enter, until inside the bridal chamber you see the bridegroom, until you hear: "Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a little, I will set you over much," until you become sons of light and sons of day. But do not, before seeing and receiving and experiencing these things, deceive your own selves and reason falsely, thinking you are something when you are nothing, and as being lax in conscience, you suppose yourselves to be spiritual before receiving the Holy Spirit, and for this reason you foolishly hasten to take up alien thoughts and step up to positions of leadership and authority, and fearlessly dare to take on the priesthood, and shamelessly put yourselves forward for metropolitan sees and bishoprics to (225) shepherd the Lord's people through countless devices. But pay attention, I beseech you, to yourselves, setting your minds on things above, seeking the things above, longing for the things above, being anxious for none of the things on earth, before receiving those things.
Yes, let us despise all visible things, I ask your love; let us put off all human things, let us loathe all passionate and harmful things, so that we may obtain both the good things here and those to come in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom belongs all glory, honor, and worship, with the unoriginate Father and the all-holy and good and life-giving Spirit, the one thrice-holy light, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
DISCOURSE VI. (226)
Concerning impassibility and a life of virtue. And how one must cut off one's own will and ascend to the height of perfection. And concerning the connection of God to the soul and of the soul to the body, and the wondrous union of the three. And in addition to these things, concerning spiritual healing and how one must treat those who are spiritually sick.
Having often conversed with many in the world and of certain discussions
having arisen between us, concerning passion, I mean, and impassibility, I have heard almost all of them saying, not only those who are imperfect in virtue and piety, but also those who seem to be perfect in virtue and who have great names and reputation in the world, that it is not possible for a man to come to such a height of impassibility, as to converse and dine with women and suffer no harm, nor to experience any movement or defilement in secret. Of these things I am an earwitness
