But the king, having become angry, said, "I will return, and I will kill you and exact penalties for your false prophecy." But he, fearing the threat not at all, said, shouting, "Kill me, if the falsehood of my words should be detected." 273 And Vetranion also, distinguished by every kind of virtue, and entrusted with governing the cities of all Scythia as high priest, both fired his spirit with zeal and rebuked the corruption of the doctrines and the transgressions of Valens against the saints, and he cried out with the most divine David: " I spoke of your testimonies before kings, and was not ashamed. " But he, despising those best of counselors, sent the army forth into battle array, while he himself, sitting in a certain village, awaited the victory. But the barbarian soldiers, not bearing the charge, were turned to flight and were slaughtered as they were pursued; and the one side fled with speed, while the other pursued with all their might. And the barbarians, having captured that village where Valens, having learned of the defeat, had tried to hide, having thrown fire, burned along with the village also the adversary of piety. So indeed that man paid the penalty even in the present life for the offenses he had committed. But I think it worthwhile to teach those who are ignorant how these barbarians received the Arian disease. When, having crossed the Ister, they made a treaty of peace with Valens, at that time the ill-omened Eudoxius, who was present, suggested to the emperor to persuade the Goths to enter into communion with him; for having long ago received the rays of the knowledge of God, they were nourished on the apostolic doctrines. Valens, having praised this opinion, proposed to their leaders an agreement in doctrines; but they said they would not tolerate abandoning their ancestral teaching. And at that time Ulfilas was their bishop, whom they greatly obeyed, and they held his words to be unshakeable laws. Eudoxius, having charmed this man with words and enticed him with money, prepared him to persuade the barbarians to embrace the emperor's communion. And he persuaded him by saying that the strife had arisen from ambition, and that there was no difference in doctrines. For this reason, even to this day, the Goths say the Father is greater than the Son, but they do not tolerate calling the Son a creature, although they are in communion with those who do.
