of the earth, and all the tribes of the nations shall worship before him; for the kingdom is the Lord's, and he is the governor of the nations." And what follows has the same meaning; for it foretells the new people from all the nations. 10.98 And to omit most things, hear him saying in the forty-fourth psalm: "Instead of your fathers, your sons were born; you will make them princes over all the earth." And again in the forty-fifth: "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among 10.99 the nations; I will be exalted in the earth." And the one after this foretells the salvation of the nations: "Clap your hands," it says, "all you nations; shout to God with the voice of triumph; for the Lord Most High is awesome, a great king over all the 10.100 earth." And the seventh and the eighth, and indeed the ninth and all, so to speak, the psalms prophesy the change of the world and proclaim the calling and faith of the nations, and in addition to these, the pre-eternal existence of our God and Savior, his generation from the Father, his birth from a virgin, the miracles, the passions, the unbelief of the Jews, the resurrection from the dead, the ascension into heaven, the coming of the Spirit, the course of the apostles to all the earth and sea. 10.101 And indeed all the other prophets also foretell these things. But I have considered it a secondary task to collect all the prophecies; for I would have needed many books, both to write them all and to say what is appropriate about each. But it is enough for you, if you wish, to discern the truth from the others which you have heard. For these are clear and true and, as it were, vivid images of the 10.102 events. Therefore, just as one might more easily understand the art of the best painters by comparing the image with the true and original character, so you also must compare the prophecy, prefigured as a kind of idea by the wisest painter, with the events that have already reached their fulfillment and behold the 10.103 unalterable similarity. For long ago, before the prophecy reached its fulfillment, it was some trouble to persuade the people of that time that the oracles were true; but since we now see things foretold long ago and very long ago fulfilled, and those words having become deeds, we need no labors to persuade our ears. For these have the eyes as witnesses; and Herodotus is superfluous for us in saying that "for men, ears are less trustworthy than eyes," For the eyes see, I suppose, what the ears hear. 10.104 Since, therefore, you have heard a few prophecies and have seen the testimony of the events, compare, O men, the oracles of the prophets with your own oracles and cry out with the apostle: "What fellowship has light with darkness? Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? What 10.105 agreement has the temple of God with idols?" For the choirs of the prophets are the temples of God; but the idols are deaf, those worshipped by the nations, about which the divine spirit says: "The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of men's hands; they have mouths, but they will not speak; they have eyes, but they will not see; they have ears, but they will not hear; they have noses, but they will not smell; they have hands, but they will not feel; they have feet, but they will not walk; they will not speak through their throat; for there is no breath in their mouth. May those who make them become like them, and all who trust in them." May you learn the truth and not partake of the prophetic curse.
