But the general, having become judge of what was said, handed over the churches to the great Meletius, and Paulinus remained as leader of the sheep that had separated from the beginning. But Apollinaris, having failed to obtain the leadership of the churches, henceforth openly preached his innovative doctrine and declared himself the founder of the heresy. And he himself spent most of his time in Laodicea; but in Antioch he had already previously ordained Vitalius, a man adorned with an excellent life and brought up in the apostolic doctrines, but who later accepted the disease. But the divine Meletius appointed that Diodorus, whom I have mentioned before, who in the most grievous tempest saved the unbaptized vessel of the church, as shepherd of Tarsus and entrusted the nation of the Cilicians to him. He entrusted the episcopal care of Apamea to John, who possessed the distinction of his family, but was made illustrious more by his own achievements than by those of his ancestors; for at the same time, both his speech and his life adorned him. This man, in the time of the storm, governed the assembly of the faithful, and had as his fellow-worker the praiseworthy Stephen. But the divine Meletius also transferred this man to other struggles. For having learned that Germanicia had been corrupted by the outrage of Eudoxius, he sent this man as a physician to ward off evil; for he was trained in all Hellenic learning and had been brought up in the divine doctrines. And he was not disappointed in his hope; for using spiritual teaching he changed the wolves into sheep. 283 But the great Eusebius, having returned from exile, ordained Acacius, whose fame is great, in Beroea, and in Hierapolis Theodotus, whose ascetic life all sing of even to this day, and Eusebius of Chalcis, and for our own Cyrrhus, Isidore; and both were admirable and adorned with divine zeal. And they say that he also ordained that Eulogius, who had contended for the apostolic doctrines and had been sent to Antinoë with Protogenes, as shepherd of Edessa; for Barses the divine had already met the end of his life. And Eulogius appointed Protogenes, his companion in the struggles, over Carrhae, bestowing a physician to ward off evil on a city that was not in a good state. But the divine Eusebius ordained Maris as the last bishop for Doliche; this is a small town and at that time had partaken of the Arian disease. Wishing to install this Maris, who was praiseworthy and distinguished by many kinds of virtue, on the episcopal throne, the great Eusebius went to Doliche. But as he was entering, a certain woman, filled with the Arian disease, threw a tile from above, from the roof, which crushed his head and after a short time sent him to the better life. But as he was dying, he charged them, binding those present with oaths, to exact no penalty from the woman who had done this, for he was imitating his own master, who said concerning those who crucified him: "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do", and his fellow servant Stephen who, after the many showers of stones, cried out: "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." Such was the end the great Eusebius received after all kinds of 284 struggles; and having escaped the barbarians in Thrace, he did not escape the hands of the impious heretics, but through them he bound on the crown of martyrdom. These things, then, happened after the return of the bishops. But Gratian, having learned that Thrace was being ravaged by the barbarians who had burned Valens, left Italy and came to Pannonia. At that time Theodosius was most famous both for the distinction of his ancestors and for his own courage, and on this account, being assailed by the envy of his peers and countrymen, he was living in Spain; for in those parts he was born and raised.
