Symmachus says: "Have you not known or have you not heard?" But Aquila: "Have you not then known or have you not heard?" But Theodotion: "Did you not know or did you not hear?" You have no defense, he says; for through all the prophets and myriad miracles I have taught you my power. Then he recalls what he has often taught: an eternal God. This is what the blessed Moses also said: "I am who I am," and the blessed David also says to him: "But you, O Lord, remain forever and your remembrance to generation and generation," and again: "But you are the same, and your years shall not fail." God who made the ends of the earth. And the blessed Moses taught this: for he says, "In the beginning God made the heaven and the earth," and the blessed David: "Who lays the foundation of the earth and its security." He will not hunger nor will he grow weary. And David said this through the blessed one: "Will I |149 b| eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?" And there is no searching of his understanding. And the blessed David also proclaimed this: "Great is our Lord, and great is his power, and of his understanding there is no number." 29Giving strength to the hungry and to those not in pain, grief. This is what the wonderful Hannah also said: "The Lord makes poor and makes rich, he brings low and he exalts," and so forth. 30For the young shall hunger and the youths shall grow weary, and the chosen shall be without strength; 31but they who wait for God shall renew their strength, they shall put forth feathers like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not hunger. And these things happened both in the case of the Jews and in the case of the divine apostles. For as many as disbelieved were delivered over to famine and plague and war and enslavement; but those who believed, having been renewed by the all-holy Spirit, imitating the swiftest flight of eagles, ran to the whole inhabited world as if striving in other men's bodies. Thus having shown the course of the apostles, he foretells salvation to the churches throughout the world: 411Be renewed unto me, you islands; for the rulers shall renew their strength. He calls the churches islands, as receiving the waves of persecutors and being founded upon the rock, and he addresses the heralds of the truth as rulers, who came one after another after the call; for he says, "Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men." Therefore they renewed their strength; for they no longer hunted fish from one lake but men from the whole inhabited world. Let them draw near and let them speak together, then let them declare judgment. He exhorts the same to offer harmonious teaching and to proclaim to all the coming judgment. 2Who raised up righteousness from the east? They called him to his feet, and they will go, and he will give them before nations and will make kings stand aside and will give their swords to the earth and their children as driven stubble 3and he will pursue them, and the path of his feet will pass through in peace, he will not come. Concerning this righteousness the blessed Paul also said: "Wisdom was given to us from God, both righteousness and sanctification and redemption." When this righteousness arose and ran over the inhabited world, kings were amazed, tyrants were defeated, every form of punishment was exposed, and the persecuted conquered the persecutors and, as if enjoying perfect peace, they completed the course set before them. However, the phrase "he will not come" is not found in the Septuagint, but as it is found in the Others it was added with an asterisk. It means that righteousness will not come to all but to those who believe; for the impious did not even wish to pay attention to the divine proclamations. 4Who has performed and done these things? He who calls her from the beginning of generations has called her, that is, righteousness. From the beginning, he says, he foretold the things concerning her. He also made these covenants with Abraham, saying, "In your seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed," and with Isaac and with Jacob and with Moses and with David; these things he also foretold through the other prophets.
