I am sufficient for the doxology of your goodness. And I pray for your immeasurable compassions, Lord Jesus Christ, Son and Word of the invisible Father, who brought all things forth by a word and holds them together by your will, who rescued us, your unworthy servants, from the slavery of the arch-evil enemy, who was stretched upon the wood and bound the strong one, and awarded eternal freedom to those bound by him; you yourself, even now stretch out your invisible and all-working hand, and completely free your servant and my father from that harsh captivity of the devil; and show him most clearly that you are the ever-living, true God and the 526 only eternal and immortal king. Behold, Master, the contrition of my heart with a merciful and benevolent eye; and according to your unfailing promise be with me, who knows and confesses you as creator and provider of all creation. Let your springing water gush forth in me; and let a word be given to me in the opening of my mouth, and a mind well-established in you, the cornerstone, so that I, your unprofitable servant, may be able to proclaim to my father, as is right, the mystery of your economy, and to turn him by your power from the vain deceit of the evil demons, and to bring him to you, the God and master, who does not wish the death of us sinners, but awaits our return and repentance, for you are glorified unto the ages. Amen. Having prayed thus and received assurance not to fail in his desire, taking courage in the compassion of Christ, setting out from there with the royal bodyguard, he reaches the palace of his own father. And when the arrival of the son was announced to the father, he immediately goes out to meet him, embraces him, kisses him tenderly, and makes great joy and a public festival for the presence of his son. And what after this? They sit down alone with each other. And what might one say that the son then discussed with the king and with how much philosophy? What else indeed but the things prompted in him by the divine Spirit, through whom the fishermen net the whole world for Christ, and the unlettered are shown to be wiser than the 528 wise. By his grace he himself, having been made wise, spoke to the king and his father, illuminating him with the light of knowledge. For previously, having toiled much to draw his father from superstitious error, what did he not say, what did he not do, in order to win him over, he seemed to be singing to the deaf, and speaking into ears that did not hear; but when the Lord looked upon the humility of his servant Ioasaph, and, having hearkened to his prayer, opened the closed gates of his father's heart (for, it says, "He will fulfill the desire of those who fear him, and he will hear their prayer"), the king easily understood the things being said; so that, finding a suitable moment, the son by the grace of Christ raised up a victory over the evil spirits that had mastered his father's soul, and completely freed him from their deceit, and clearly made known the word of salvation and reconciled him to the living God in heaven. For taking up the account from the beginning, he announced to him great and marvelous things which he did not know, which he had not heard with the ears of the heart, speaking many things to him concerning God and demonstrating piety, that there is no other God in heaven above, nor on earth below, except the one God known in Father and Son and Holy Spirit; and having made known many mysteries of theology, among which he also related the things concerning the invisible and visible creation, how the Creator brought all things forth from non-being, having fashioned man in his own image and likeness and 530 having honored him with free will, he made him to partake of the good things in paradise, commanding him to abstain from this alone which was the
