intending to show you forth as a child and to bestow the land of promise, which only the righteous inherit. (276) If he leads you up to the mountain, ascend eagerly; for you will see, I know well, Christ transfigured and shining more brightly than the sun with the light of the Godhead, and perhaps you will fall down, unable to bear seeing things you have never seen, and you will hear a fatherly voice from above, and you will see a cloud overshadowing, and prophets standing by and confirming that he is God and Lord of the living and the dead.
If he encourages you to follow, go around the cities with him boldly; for you will be benefited the most, if you look to him alone. If you see him eating with prostitutes and tax collectors and sinners, do not think anything passionate and human, but consider all things dispassionate and holy and keep in mind, "I have become all things to all men, that I might save all," seeing him condescending to human passions. But do not, seeing with your eyes, trust them at all; for these too are deceived, as I have learned by experience. Following him and obeying the things said by him, do not look at those with you nor say about anyone: "Lord, what about this man? " but always pay attention to yourself and have death before your eyes and consider thoughtfully in what virtue you will glorify God. Do not be puffed up because your teacher is honored by a greater one, (277) nor because in his name you have many who obey you, but rejoice rather if your name is written in the heaven of humility. If you see demons trembling even at your shadow, do not ascribe the whole thing to yourself but to the intercession of your father, and they will fear you more.
If he encourages you to be seated at table, if it is near him, accept gratefully, and keep reverence and honor toward him with silence, and do not touch any of the things set before you without his blessing; but neither give to another nor dare to prefer anyone without his consent and command. But if he calls you to the last place, do not say: "I will sit at the right or the left," knowing that this has been prepared for others and having heard that "Whoever wishes to be first among all, let him be last," and accept the lower place as a means to the higher, and love the teacher as one who manages greater things for you well through humble ones. But do not out of audacity be the first to dip your hand with him in the bowl; for you are not ignorant whose presumption this was. If he wishes to wash your feet, revere him as Lord and teacher and postpone the attempt. But if you hear: "You have no part with me, unless I wash your feet," eagerly offer your whole body also for cleansing, so that you may learn from the things done to you (278) the great height of deifying humility, and you will then be benefited much more, if you have a good conscience, than when you might wash your father's feet. If, reclining, he says: "One of you will betray me or is scandalized by me," do not hide the deceit, but if you are conscious of it, confess; but if not, falling on your face at his feet, ask with tears: "Is it I, Lord?". For we stumble very much and in ignorance. But to fall on your father's breast is not expedient for you; for even if John out of much love spoke freely to Christ as to a man, yet he too, along with everyone, when he had done everything, was commanded to call himself an unprofitable servant.
If you see the one who guides you working miracles and being glorified, believe and rejoice and give thanks to God that you have obtained such a teacher, but do not be scandalized by the envious when you see him being dishonored, perhaps also being struck and dragged, but like fervent Peter take the sword and stretching out your hand, cut off not only the ear but also the hand and the tongue

(276) Ἐάν εἰς τό ὄρος ἀνάγῃ σε, προθύμως ἄνελθε· καί γάρ θεάσῃ, εὖ οἶδα, Χριστόν μεταμορφούμενον καί πλειόνως ὑπέρ τόν ἥλιον λάμποντα τῷ φωτί τῆς Θεότητος, καί καταπέσῃς ἴσως μή φέρων ὁρᾶν ἅ οὐδέποτε τεθεάσαι, καί φωνῆς ἀκούσῃς πατρῴας ἄνωθεν, καί νεφέλην ἴδῃς σκιάζουσαν, καί προφήτας παρισταμένους καί βεβαιοῦντας ζώντων καί νεκρῶν αὐτόν Θεόν ὑπάρχειν καί Κύριον.
Ἐάν ἀκολουθεῖν προτρέψηται, περιέρχου τάς πόλεις μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ θαρσαλέως· καί γάρ ὠφεληθήσῃ τά μέγιστα, ἐάν εἰς αὐτόν ἀποβλέπῃς καί μόνον. Ἐάν ἴδῃς μετά πορνῶν καί τελωνῶν καί ἁμαρτωλῶν συνεσθίοντα, μηδέν λογίσῃ ἐμπαθές καί καί ἀνθρώπινον, ἀλλ᾿ ἀπαθῆ πάντα καί ἅγια καί τό "Ἐγενόμην τοῖς πᾶσι τά πάντα, ἵνα τούς πάντας κερδήσω" κατά νοῦν λογίζου, βλέπων αὐτόν τοῖς ἀνθρωπίνοις συγκαταβαίνοντα πάθεσιν. Ἀλλά μηδέ τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς βλέπων, τούτοις πιστεύσῃς τό σύνολον· πλανῶνται γάρ καί οὗτοι, ὡς ἔργῳ μεμάθηκα. Ἀκολουθῶν αὐτῷ καί τοῖς παρ᾿ αὐτοῦ λεγομένοις πειθαρχῶν, μή ἀποβλέπῃς πρός τούς συνόντας σοι μηδέ εἴπῃς περί τινος· "Κύριε, οὗτος δέ τί; " ἀλλά πάντοτε σεαυτῷ πρόσεχε καί πρό ὀφθαλμῶν ἔχε τόν θάνατον καί σκόπει λελογισμένως ἐν ποίῳ ἀρετῇ δοξάσεις τόν Θεόν. Μή ἐπαρθῇς διά τόν σόν διδάσκαλον παρά μείζωνος τιμώμενος, (277) μηδέ διά τό ἐκείνου ὄνομα πολλούς ἔχων ὑπακούοντάς σου, χαῖρε δέ μᾶλλον ἐάν τό ὄνομά σου γραφῇ ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ τῆς ταπεινώσεως. Ἐάν βλέπῃς καί τήν σκιάν σου τούς δαίμονας τρέμοντας, μή σεαυτῷ ἀλλά τῇ τοῦ πατρός σου πρεσβείᾳ τό ὅλον ἐπίγραψον, καί πλειόνως σε φοβηθήσονται.
Ἐάν ἐπί τραπέζης καθεσθῆναι προτρέψῃ σοι, εἰ μέν πλησίον, εὐγνωμόνως ἀπόδεξαι, καί σέβας καί τιμήν μετά σιωπῆς πρός αὐτόν φύλαξον, καί μή ἅψῃ τῶν προκειμένων τινός ἄνευ τῆς ἐκείνου εὐχῆς· ἀλλά μηδέ ἑτέρῳ δώσῃς ἤ προτιμήσασθαί τινα τολμήσῃς ἄνευ γνώμης ἐκείνου καί προστάξεως. Εἰ δέ ἐσχάτως πάντως καλέσει σε, μή εἴπῃς· "Ἐκ δεξιῶν ἤ ἀριστερῶν καθεσθήσομαι", εἰδώς ὅτι τοῦτο ἄλλοις ἡτοίμασται καί ἀκηκοώς ὅτι "Ὁ θέλων εἶναι πρῶτος πάντων, ἔστω ἔσχατος", καί τό κάτω μέρος ὡς τοῦ ἄνω ἀπόδεξαι πρόξενον, καί ἀγάπησον τόν διδάσκαλον ὡς καλῶς σοι διά τῶν εὐτελῶν πραγματευόμενον τά μείζονα. Ἀλλά μή ἐξ αὐθαδείας μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ πρῶτος ἐμβάψῃς τήν χεῖρα ἐν τῷ τριβλίῳ· τίνος γάρ οὐκ ἀγνοεῖς τοῦτο τό τόλμημα. Ἐάν θελήσῃς νίψαι τούς πόδας σου, αἰδέσθητι αὐτόν ὡς Κύριον καί διδάσκαλον καί ἀναβαλοῦ τό ἐγχείρημα. Ἐάν δέ ἀκούσῃς· "Οὐκ ἔχεις μέρος μετ᾿ ἐμοῦ, ἐάν μή τούς πόδας σου νίψω", προθύμως καί ὅλον τό σῶμά σου παράσχου εἰς κάθαρσιν, ἵνα μάθῃς ἐκ τῶν εἰς σέ γενομένων (278) τό πολύ ὕψος τῆς θεοποιοῦ ταπεινώσεως, καί πλεῖον μᾶλλον τηνικαῦτα ὠφεληθῇς, ἐάν, ἔχῃς συνείδησιν, ἤ ὅτε σύ τούς πόδας τοῦ πατρός σου νίψειας. Ἐάν εἴπῃ ἀναπεσών· "Εἷς ἐξ ὑμῶν παραδώσει με ἤ σκανδαλίζει με", μή κρύψῃς τόν δόλον, ἀλλ᾿ εἰ συγγινώσκεις, ἐξομολόγησαι· εἰ δέ μή, ἐπί τούς αὐτοῦ πόδας ἐπί πρόσωπον πεσών, μετά δακρύων ἐρώτησον· "Μή τι ἐγώ εἰμι, ∆έσποτα;". Καί γάρ πταίομεν πλεῖστα καί κατά ἄγνοιαν. Ἐπί τό στῆθος δέ πεσεῖν τοῦ πατρός σου οὐ συμφέρει σοι· εἰ γάρ καί Ἰωάννης ἐξ ἀγάπης πολλῆς πρός τόν Χριστόν ὡς πρός ἄνθρωπον ἐπαρρησιάσατο, ἀλλά μετά πάντων καί αὐτός, ὅτε πάντα ποιήσειεν, ἀχρεῖον δοῦλον ἑαυτόν ἀποκαλεῖν προσετέτακτο.
Ἐάν ἴδῃς τόν ὁδηγοῦντά σε θαυματουργοῦντα καί δοξαζόμενον, πίστευσον καί εὐφράνθητι καί τῷ Θεῷ εὐχαρίστησον ὅτι τοιούτου διδασκάλου τετύχηκας, μή σκανδαλισθῇς δέ παρά τῶν φθονούντων ὁρῶν ἀτιμαζόμενον αὐτόν, ἴσως καί ῥαπιζόμενον καί συρόμενον, ἀλλ᾿ ὡς θερμός Πέτρος λάβε τήν μάχαιραν καί τήν χεῖρα ἐκτείνας, μή τό ὠτίον μόνον ἀλλά καί τήν χεῖρα καί τήν γλῶσσαν ἀπόκοψον
