the tree of knowledge, and having disregarded the commandment, He banished him from paradise; whence, having slipped from intimacy with Him, the human race has fallen into these many errors, enslaved to sins and subject to death through the tyranny of the devil; who, having once taken men under his control, has made them completely forget God and Master, and persuaded them to worship him through the abominable veneration of idols. Therefore, God who formed us, being moved with compassion, by the good pleasure of the Father and the cooperation of the Holy Spirit, was pleased to be born according to our nature from a holy Virgin, Mary the Theotokos; and, the Impassible One, having experienced sufferings, and having risen from the dead on the third day, redeemed us from our former penalty and deemed us worthy of our former glory. For He raised us up with Him to heaven as He ascended, from whence He had happened to descend; whom we also believe will come again, in order to resurrect His own creation. And He will render to each according to his works. Upon these things he initiated them into the kingdom of heaven that awaits the worthy and its ineffable goods. He added the torment laid up for the wicked, the unquenchable fire, the outer darkness, the undying worm, and whatever other punishment the slaves of sin have stored up for themselves. Having gone through all these things with many words, and bearing wit 532 ness to the grace of the Spirit abundantly present in him, and then also recounting the unsearchable sea of God's love for mankind and how He is ready to receive the repentance of those who turn to Him, and how there is no sin that overcomes His compassion, if we are willing to repent, and having demonstrated this from many examples and scriptural testimonies, he then put an end to his discourse. χχχῃ But King Abenner, being pricked in his heart by this divinely-taught wisdom, with a loud voice and most fervent soul confessed Christ the Savior, having abandoned every superstitious error. And he venerated the sign of the life-giving cross in the sight of all and, for all to hear, he proclaimed the true God, our Lord Jesus Christ; and having recounted his former impiety, and having condemned his own cruelty and blood-guiltiness against the Christians, he becomes a great part of piety; so that from this the saying of Paul was known by deed, that where the abundance of impiety was, there also the superabundance of grace came to be. Therefore, when the most wise Joasaph had discoursed at length to the generals and satraps and all the people who had then assembled concerning God and piety towards Him, and, as with a 534 fiery tongue, was trilling something good and songlike, the grace of the Holy Spirit, coming upon them, moved all to the doxology of God, so that all the crowds shouted with one voice: “Great is the God of the Christians; there is no other god except our Lord Jesus Christ, glorified with the Father and the Holy Spirit.” And being filled with divine zeal, King Abenner fiercely leaped upon the idols which were in his palace, made of gold and silver, and pulled them down to the ground. Then, having broken them into small pieces, he distributed them to the poor, thus making the useless useful; indeed, with his son, surrounding the temples and altars of the idols, they razed them even to their foundations; and they built sacred precincts to God in their place. And they did these things with zeal not only in the city, but also throughout the whole country. And the evil spirits inhabiting the altars were driven out, wailing, and trembling at the invincible power of our God, they cried out. And the whole surrounding region and most of the neighboring nations were led by the hand to the pious faith. Then, when the most divine bishop mentioned above had arrived, King Abenner was catechized, and was perfected by holy baptism in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the
