The Lord: Blessed is he who has seed in Zion, and kinsmen in Jerusalem; for behold, a righteous king will reign, and rulers will rule with judgment. The Christ of God who said, "but I was established as king by him," is also indicated by these things; the rulers under him would be either the apostles and those who rule the churches with God's judgment, or divine angels, overseers of the salvation of men; and on account of this one who reigns over Zion and Jerusalem, blessed is he who has seed in Zion, and kinsmen in Jeru 195 salem; which things must be understood worthily of the apostolic spirit, which teaches us about the Jerusalem above, and of the heavenly Mount Zion. Ps. 10. Rejoice, thirsty desert, let the desert exult, and blossom like a lily; and the deserts of the Jordan will blossom and exult; and the glory of Lebanon was given to her, and the honor of Carmel; and my people will see the glory of the Lord, and the height of God. Be strong, you weakened hands, and you paralyzed knees; encourage, you fainthearted in mind; be strong, do not be afraid; behold, our God repays judgment and will repay; he himself will come and save us; then the eyes of the blind will be opened, and the ears of the deaf will hear; then the lame will leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute will be clear, for water has broken out in the desert, and a ravine in the thirsty land; and the waterless place will become marshes, and in the thirsty land there will be a spring of water. He foretells that at the presence of God the extraordinary healings will occur. Clearly, therefore, here also the Christ of God has been honored by the name of God; at whose presence both the aforementioned healings were bodily accomplished for the suffering, and even more wondrously they are now at work through faith in him, as the entire race of men is being freed from the passions of the soul. But water broke out in the desert at the presence of Christ, and a ravine in the thirsty land, as the potable and life-giving word gushed forth in the formerly desolate and 196 thirsty land, the church from the Gentiles, in which, being formerly waterless and thirsty, a spring of the living water of the words of Jesus, leaping up to eternal life, suddenly rained down; being watered by this spring, the once-desert is said to blossom like a lily, and is commanded to rejoice and exult; and the cause of the joy and exultation is also stated, since it says, "the glory of Lebanon was given to her," that is, of Jerusalem; concerning which it was said in the preceding prophecies, that Lebanon also will fall with its lofty ones; and when it fell, the glory that was formerly in it was given to the now evangelized desert, that is, to the church from the Gentiles, along with the former honor of the so-called Carmel, clearly meaning of the former people. These things clearly were brought to fulfillment by deeds after the presence of Christ, in accordance with both the prophecy at hand, and with the voice of our Savior himself which says, that the kingdom of God will be taken away, and will be given to a nation producing its fruits. Ps. 17. A voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight; every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low; and all crooked things shall become straight and the rough way into plains; and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God, for the Lord has spoken. The forerunner of our Savior, John, to those asking him who he was, says, "I am a voice of one crying in 197 the wilderness," and so on. For this reason, therefore, we have set forth this chapter in the testimonies concerning Christ, considering John to be a symbol of the apostolic proclamation; for such indeed is the voice crying in the wilderness, being somewhat indistinct, and inarticulate to those just being instructed; but in the former desert, the church from the Gentiles, such a voice having come into being exhorts to prepare the way of the Lord, and so on; which things he who is concerned with the knowledge of these things will know by investigating them at leisure. Ps. 18. Go up on a high mountain, you who bring good tidings
