from gold or silver or tin or bronze, have their nature from the earth; for each of these is from the earth. He calls the idol an abomination as being full of abominations. 25But I have raised up one from the north and one from the rising of the sun, and they shall be called by my name; let rulers come |151 a| as potter's clay, and as a potter treading the clay, so you will be trodden down. He threatens the idols with destruction. He calls the one from the east the righteousness that has risen, about which he also said before: "Who has raised up righteousness from the east?" But the one from the north, the church from the nations, to which came the one from Teman or "from the south" according to the Other Interpreters. For "God shall come from Teman," that is, from the south. Thus the Lord Christ, appearing from the south and finding it frozen by the deceit of idols, warmed it with the noonday rays and brought it back to life. By this and by its rulers, priests and teachers, the multitude of idols was trodden down. 26For who has declared things from the beginning, that we might know, and things beforehand, that we may say that they are true? Your supposed oracles, he says, are full of falsehood. There is no one who foretells nor anyone who hears your words. And the outcome testifies to the word; for the oracles everywhere on earth and sea have ceased, and those who gaped after these things have learned the truth. 27I will give a beginning to Zion and I will console Jerusalem for the way. However, I will bring the first fruits of the teaching to Jerusalem. Thus also in the holy gospels he said: "I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Jacob." 28For from the nations, behold, there was no one. For the first ones to believe from the Jews became their preachers. And from their idols there was no one who declared. He often ridiculed their ignorance. This testimony the divine evangelist also has set down; for having said that the Lord, after healing many, instructed that they should tell no one, he added the foregoing. However, one must know that Aquila and Symmachus and Theodotion have put neither "Jacob" nor "Israel," for it is not found in the Hebrew. Following them the divine evangelist also has said: "Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, my chosen one in whom my soul is well pleased." That none of these things is fitting for the Jews, the very words of the prophecy show. For what is more insolent than they? What is more frenzied? But the prophetic word testifies to all the forbearance and gentleness of the savior. This also announced the coming judgment to the enemies of the apostles. He calls him "child" or "servant" according to the Other Interpreters, according to his humanity; for according to this he names him both Jacob and Israel as having sprung from Jacob, who is also Israel, according to the flesh. Thus also he receives the all-holy spirit, not as God, for he is without need, but as man, so that he might become a type for those who have believed in him.
