they say. For they assert that he formed all things after himself, being secretly moved by the Mother; whence also they call him Metropator and Apator and Demiurge and Father, saying he is the father of the things on the right, that is of the psychical, but the demiurge of the things on the left, that is of the material, and king of all things. For this Enthymesis, wishing to make all things in honor of the Aeons, they say made images of them, or rather the Savior did through her. And that she herself † was preserved in the image of the invisible Father, not being known by the Demiurge, but he in the image of the only-begotten son, and the archangels and angels who were made by him in the image of the other Aeons. Therefore they say that he became father and god of those outside the Pleroma, being the maker of all things psychical and material. For having separated the two substances which were mixed together, and having made bodies out of incorporeal things, he created both the heavenly and the earthly things, and became the demiurge of material and psychical things, of things on the right and on the left, of light and heavy things, of things that move upwards and things that move downwards. For he fashioned seven heavens, above which they say the Demiurge is. And for this reason they call him Hebdomad, but the Mother, Achamoth, Ogdoad, preserving the number of the archetypal and first Ogdoad of the Pleroma. And they say that the seven heavens are not intelligible, but they suppose them to be angels, and the Demiurge himself also an angel, but like God, just as they say that paradise, 1.414 being above the third heaven, is a fourth archangel in power, and that Adam, having spent time in it, received something from him. But they assert that the Demiurge thought he fashioned these things from himself in every respect, but that he made them as Achamoth projected them. For he made heaven without knowing heaven; and he formed man, being ignorant of man; and he showed forth the earth, not understanding the earth; and thus they say concerning all things that he was ignorant of the forms of what he was making, and of the Mother herself, but thought that he alone was all things. And they assert that the Mother was the cause for him of this creation, having thus wished to bring him forth, as head and beginning of her own substance, and lord of the whole operation. And this Mother they also call Ogdoad and Sophia and Earth and Jerusalem and Holy Spirit and Lord, in the masculine; and she has the place of the Midst, and is above the Demiurge, but below or outside the Pleroma until the consummation. 19. Since, therefore, they say that the material substance was constituted from three passions, fear and grief and perplexity, from fear and conversion the psychical things received their constitution; from conversion they will have it that the Demiurge came into being, but from fear all the remaining psychical substance, such as the souls of irrational animals and beasts and men. And for this reason, being too weak to know spiritual things, he considered himself to be the only God and said through the prophets, "I am God, and besides me there is no other." But from grief they teach that the spiritual things of wickedness came to be; whence also the Devil had his origin, whom they also call Cosmocrator, and the demons and the an1.415gels and all the spiritual substance of wickedness. But they say the Demiurge is the psychical son of their Mother, and the Cosmocrator is a creature of the Demiurge. And the Cosmocrator knows the things above him, because he is a spirit of wickedness, but the Demiurge is ignorant of them, since he is psychical. And their Mother dwells in the super-celestial place, that is in the Midst, but the Demiurge in the celestial place, that is in the Hebdomad, and the Cosmocrator in our world. But from astonishment and
