his father having died, and having honorably cared for his remains, he laid him in a tomb of pious men, not, however, clothing him in royal garments, but adorning him with the raiment of repentance. And standing over the tomb, and raising his hands to heaven, and letting tears stream like a river from his eyes, he cried out to God, saying: O God, I thank You, King of glory, the only mighty and immortal One, because You did not disregard my petition nor were You silent at my tears, but You were pleased for this Your servant and my father to turn back from the path of iniquities and to draw him to Yourself, the Savior of all, turning him away from the deceit of idols, and deeming him worthy to know You, the true God who loves mankind. And now, O my Lord and God, who have an unsearchable ocean of goodness, set him in a verdant place, in a place of rest, where the light of Your countenance shines; and do not remember his former iniquities, but according to Your great mercy wipe out the record of his transgressions, and tear up the bills of his debts, and reconcile to him Your 542 saints whom he destroyed with fire and sword; command them not to be angry with him. For all things are possible for You, the Master of all, except only not to have mercy on those who do not turn to You; this is impossible. For Your mercy is poured out upon all, and You save those who call upon You, Lord Jesus Christ, for to You is due glory for ever and ever. Amen. Such prayers and petitions he offered to God for seven whole days, not once departing from the tomb, not thinking of food or drink at all, nor indeed partaking of the repose of sleep; but he wet the ground with tears, and with unceasing groans he continued to pray. And on the eighth day, having returned to the palace, he distributed all his wealth and possessions to the poor, so that none of those in need were left. χχχῃι In a few days, having completed such a ministry and emptied all the treasuries, so that, as he was about to enter the narrow gate, the burden of his possessions might not hinder him in any way, on the fortieth day of his father's death, celebrating his memory, he summons all those in authority and those girt for military service and not a few of the civil population. And taking his seat at the head, as was the custom, he says for all to hear: Behold, as you see, Abenner my father and king has died like one of the poor, 544 and neither his wealth nor his royal glory, nor indeed I his loving son, nor any of his other friends and kinsmen, had the power to help him or to deliver him from the inexorable verdict. But he goes to the tribunals beyond, to render an account of his conduct in the present life, bringing no one at all as a helper, but only his own deeds, whatever they may be. This same thing is destined to happen to all who have received mortal nature, and it cannot be otherwise. Now therefore listen to me, friends and brothers, people of the Lord and holy inheritance, whom Christ our God redeemed with His precious blood and rescued from the ancient error and bondage of the adversary. You yourselves know my conduct among you, how from the time I knew Christ and was deemed worthy to become His servant, hating all things, I desired Him alone, and this was my heart's desire, to withdraw from the storm of life and its vain turmoil, to be with Him alone and in the untroubled calm of soul to serve my God and master. But the insistence of my father held me back, and the commandment that bids us honor our parents. Wherefore, by the grace and cooperation of God, I did not labor in vain, nor did I spend such days for nothing; but I both made him a friend to Christ and taught all of you to know this one alone as true God and Lord of all,

τελευτήσαντα τὸν πατέρα, καὶ κηδεύσας αὐτοῦ τὸ λείψανον ἐντίμως, κατέθετο ἐν μνήματι ἀνδρῶν εὐσεβῶν, οὐ μέντοι βασιλικῇ περιβαλὼν ἐσθῆτι, ἀλλὰ μετανοίας κοσμήσας ἀμφίοις. στὰς δὲ ἐπὶ τῷ μνήματι, χεῖράς τε εἰς οὐρανὸν διάρας, καὶ δάκρυα ποταμηδὸν τῶν ὀμμάτων καταδύσας, ἐβόησε πρὸς τὸν Θεόν, λέγων· Ὁ Θεός, εὐχαριστῶ σε, Βασιλεῦ τῆς δόξης, μόνε κραταιὲ καὶ ἀθάνατε, ὅτι οὐ παρεῖδες τὴν δέησίν μου καὶ τῶν δακρύων μου οὐ παρεσιώπησας, ἀλλ' εὐδόκησας τὸν δοῦλόν σου τοῦτον καὶ πατέρα μου τῆς ὁδοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι τῶν ἀνομιῶν καὶ πρὸς ἑαυτὸν ἑλκύσαι τὸν σωτῆρα τῶν ἁπάντων, ἀποστήσας μὲν τῆς ἀπάτης τῶν εἰδώλων, καταξιώσας δὲ γνωρίσαι σε τὸν ἀληθινὸν Θεὸν καὶ φιλάνθρωπον. καὶ νῦν, ὦ Κύριέ μου καὶ Θεέ, ὁ ἀνεξιχνίαστον ἔχων τὸ τῆς ἀγαθότητος πέλαγος, τάξον αὐτὸν ἐν τόπῳ χλοερῷ, ἐν τόπῳ ἀναπαύσεως, ὅπου τὸ φῶς λάμπει τοῦ προσώπου σου· καὶ μὴ μνησθῇς ἀνομιῶν αὐτοῦ ἀρχαίων, ἀλλὰ κατὰ τὸ πολὺ ἔλεός σου ἐξάλειψον τὸ χειρόγραφον τῶν αὐτοῦ πταισμάτων, καὶ τὰ γραμματεῖα διάρρηξον τῶν αὐτοῦ ὀφλημάτων, καὶ τοὺς ἁγίους 542 σου κατάλλαξον αὐτῷ οὓς πυρί τε καὶ ξίφει ἀνεῖλεν· ἐπίταξον αὐτοὺς μὴ κατ' αὐτοῦ ὀργίζεσθαι. πάντα γὰρ δυνατά σοι τῷ πάντων ∆εσπότῃ, ἀλλ' ἢ μόνον τὸ μὴ ἐλεεῖν τοὺς μὴ ἐπιστρέφοντας πρὸς σέ· τοῦτο ἀδύνατον. τὸ γὰρ ἔλεός σου ἐκκέχυται ἐπὶ πάντας, καὶ σώζεις τοὺς ἐπικαλουμένους σε, Κύριε Ἰησοῦ Χριστέ, ὅτι πρέπει σοι δόξα εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας. ἀμήν. Τοιαύτας εὐχὰς καὶ δεήσεις προσέφερε τῷ Θεῷ ἐν ὅλαις ἑπτὰ ἡμέραις, μηδόλως τοῦ μνήματος ἀποστάς, μὴ βρώσεως ἢ πόσεως τοπαράπαν μνησθείς, μήτε μὴν ἀναπαύσεως ὕπνου μετασχών· ἀλλὰ δάκρυσι μὲν τὸ ἔδαφος ἔβρεχε, στεναγμοῖς δὲ ἀσιγήτοις εὐχόμενος διετέλει. τῇ ὀγδόῃ δὲ εἰς τὸ παλάτιον ἐπανελθών, πάντα τὸν πλοῦτον καὶ τὰ χρήματα τοῖς πένησι διένειμεν, ὡς μηκέτι ὑπολειφθῆναί τινα τῶν χρείαν ἐχόντων. χχχῃι Ἐν ὀλίγαις δὲ ἡμέραις τὴν τοιαύτην τελέσας διακονίαν καὶ πάντας τοὺς θησαυροὺς κατακενώσας, ὅπως μέλλοντι τὴν στενὴν εἰσιέναι πύλην μηδὲν αὐτῷ ἐμποδίσειεν ὁ τῶν χρημάτων ὄγκος, τῇ τεσσαρακοστῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῆς τοῦ πατρὸς τελευτῆς, μνήμην αὐτῷ τελῶν, συγκαλεῖ πάντας τοὺς ἐν τέλει καὶ τοὺς στρατιωτικὰ περιεζωσμένους καὶ τοῦ πολιτικοῦ λαοῦ οὐκ ὀλίγους. καὶ προκαθίσας, ὡς ἔθος, φησὶν εἰς ἐπήκοον πάντων· Ἰδού, καθὼς ὁρᾶτε, Ἀβεννὴρ πατήρ μου καὶ βασιλεὺς τέθνηκεν ὡς εἷς τῶν πενήτων, 544 καὶ οὐδὲν αὐτῷ οὔτε ὁ πλοῦτος οὔτε ἡ βασιλικὴ δόξα, οὔτε μὴν ἐγὼ ὁ φιλοπάτωρ υἱός, οὔτε τις τῶν λοιπῶν αὐτοῦ φίλων καὶ συγγενῶν, βοηθῆσαι ἴσχυσεν αὐτῷ καὶ τῆς ἀπαραιτήτου ψήφου ἐξελέσθαι. ἀλλ' ὑπάγει πρὸς τὰ ἐκεῖθεν δικαιωτήρια, λόγον ὑφέξων τῆς πολιτείας τοῦ παρόντος βίου, μηδένα τῶν ἁπάντων συνεργὸν ἐπαγόμενος, ἀλλ' ἢ μόνα τὰ αὐτῷ πεπραγμένα ὁποῖα ἂν ᾖ. τὸ αὐτὸ δὲ τοῦτο καὶ πᾶσι τοῖς τὴν βρότειον λαχοῦσι φύσιν συμβαίνειν πέφυκε, καὶ ἄλλως οὐκ ἔστι. νῦν οὖν ἀκούσατέ μου, φίλοι καὶ ἀδελφοί, λαὸς Κυρίου καὶ κλῆρος ἅγιος, οὓς ἐξηγόρασε Χριστὸς ὁ Θεὸς ἡμῶν τῷ τιμίῳ αὐτοῦ αἵματι καὶ ἐρρύσατο τῆς παλαιᾶς πλάνης καὶ δουλείας τοῦ ἀντικειμένου. αὐτοὶ οἴδατε τὴν ἐν ὑμῖν ἀναστροφήν μου, ὡς ἐξότε τὸν Χριστὸν ἔγνων καὶ δοῦλος αὐτοῦ ἠξιώθην γενέσθαι, πάντα μισήσας, αὐτὸν ἐπεπόθησα μόνον, καὶ τοῦτό μοι ἦν καταθύμιον, τῆς ζάλης τοῦ βίου καὶ ματαίας τύρβης ὑπεξελθόντα, μόνον μόνῳ αὐτῷ συνεῖναι καὶ ἐν ἀταράχῳ γαλήνῃ ψυχῆς δουλεῦσαι τῷ Θεῷ μου καὶ δεσπότῃ. ἀλλά με κατέσχεν ἡ τοῦ πατρός μου ἔνστασις, καὶ ἐντολὴ ἡ τιμᾶν τοὺς γεννήτορας κελεύουσα. ὅθεν, Θεοῦ χάριτι καὶ συνεργείᾳ, οὐκ εἰς μάτην ἐκοπίασα, οὐδ' εἰς κενὸν τὰς τοιαύτας ἀνήλωσα ἡμέρας· ἀλλ' ἐκεῖνόν τε ᾠκείωσα Χριστῷ καὶ πάντας ὑμᾶς τοῦτον μόνον γινώσκειν Θεὸν ἀληθινὸν καὶ Κύριον τοῦ παντὸς ἐδίδαξα,
