do you flay?” And though he was able to destroy with thunderbolts those who were raging against him and to break a crushed reed, as it were, and to quench a smoking flax, he endured their madness; for he knew the end of what was happening and the truth that would be born from it. Thus also, having been delivered over to death, he shone again and filled the earth with truth and made the nations depend on the hope in him. For this the prophetic word said: in his name the nations will hope. And this openly refutes the foolishness of the Jews; for what nations have hoped in their name? And what nation has not warred against them? But in the name of our God and Savior all the nations hope. 5Thus says the Lord God, who made the heaven and fixed it, who established the earth and the things in it, and gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk on it. For God not only made creation, but also has given it permanence, and it remains for as long as he himself wills. He gave breath to all men, but the all-holy Spirit not to all, but to those who tread upon the earth, that is, the earthly way of thinking. 6I, the Lord God, have called you in righteousness, and I will take hold of your hand and strengthen you, and I have given you as a covenant of a race, as a light to the nations. He says these things to the servant whom he called and speaks as to a man. And we find many such humble things also in the divine gospels; “For the child,” it says, “grew and became strong in spirit, and the grace of God was upon him,” and again: “Jesus advanced in age and wisdom and in favor with God and men,” thus praying he said: “Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me.” And that these things were human, I think even those who war against the divinity of the only-begotten and dare to call it a creature would confess. And here, therefore, he says these things as to a man: I have given you as a covenant of a race, as a light to the nations. And the race also bears witness to his nature; For what I promised to your forefathers according to the flesh, to Abraham, to Isaac, to Jacob, to David, these things I have now fulfilled also through you, who according to the flesh descend from their lineage, I fulfill the promise to them, and I bestow the light of the knowledge of God on the nations. Of this lineage the blessed Paul also made mention: “Whose are the fathers,” he says, “and from whom is the Christ according to the flesh, who is over all, God blessed forever, amen.” For the same is from the Jews according to the flesh, but is God over all as having been begotten of God the Father before the ages. Then he foretells the miracles that would happen: 7To open the eyes of the blind, to bring out the bound from their bonds, and from the prison house those who sit in darkness. Here he calls blind those whose mind’s eye is in a bad state, and these same ones are also bound by the chains of sin and held by the darkness of error. Having freed these from the gloom of ignorance and having broken the bonds of sin, he brought them to the light of truth. 8I am the Lord God, this is my name; I will not give my glory to another. And showing of what he speaks, he added: Nor my praises to graven images. For the Son has the glory of the Father and will appear in the glory of the Father; for the divinity of the Son and the Father is one. But if God says that he will not give his glory to another, and the Son is shown to have the glory of the Father, it is clear that he is not another according to substance but has the same nature as the Father. 9The former things, behold, they have come to pass, which long ago |152 a| he says he foretold. And <new things which I now announce, and before I announce them they have been declared to you.> New things to those who are ignorant of the prophetic decrees, clear to those who have been entrusted with them; For he says, I told you them long ago. Since he announces new things, he fittingly exhorts to offer a new hymn to God: 10Sing to God a new hymn. His rule is glorified above, his name is glorified from the end of the earth. For just as in the heavens the hosts of angels sing hymns to his kingdom and his dominion, so his revered

Οὕτως καὶ τῷ θανάτῳ παραδοθεὶς ἔλαμψεν αὖθις καὶ τὴν γῆν τῆς ἀληθείας ἐπλήρωσε καὶ τῆς εἰς αὐτὸν ἐλπίδος ἐξήρτησε τὰ ἔθνη. Τοῦτο γὰρ ὁ προφητικὸς ἔφη λόγος· ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματι αὐτοῦ ἔθνη ἐλπιοῦσιν. Καὶ τοῦτο καὶ ἄντικρυς ἐλέγχει τὴν Ἰουδαίων ἄνοιαν· ποῖα γὰρ ἐπὶ τῷ ἐκείνω<ν> ὀνόματι ἤλπισεν ἔθνη; Ποῖον δὲ αὐτοὺς οὐ κατεπολέμησεν ἔθνος; Εἰς δὲ τὸ τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν ὄνομα πάντα ἐλπίζει τὰ ἔθνη. 5Οὕτως λέγει κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὁ ποιήσας τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ πήξας αὐτόν, ὁ στερεώσας τὴν γῆν καὶ τὰ ἐν αὐτῇ καὶ διδοὺς πνοὴν τῷ λαῷ τῷ ἐπ' αὐτῆς καὶ πνεῦμα τοῖς πατοῦσιν αὐτήν. Οὐ γὰρ μόνον ἐποίησεν ὁ θεὸς τὴν κτίσιν, ἀλλὰ καὶ τὸ διαρκὲς αὐτῇ δέδωκε, καὶ ὅσο ν αὐτὸς βούλεται διαμένει χρόνον. Ἔδωκε πᾶσι μὲν ἀνθρώποις πνοήν, τὸ δὲ πανάγιον πνεῦμα οὐ πᾶ σιν ἀλλὰ τοῖς πατοῦσι τὴν γῆν, τουτέστι τὸ γήινον φρόνημα. 6Ἐγὼ κύριος ὁ θεὸς ἐκάλεσά σε ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ καὶ κρατήσω τῆς χειρός σου καὶ ἐνισχύσω σε καὶ ἔδωκά σε εἰς διαθήκην γένους εἰς φῶς ἐθνῶν. Πρὸς ὃν ἐκάλεσε παῖδα ταῦτά φησι καὶ ὡς πρὸς ἄνθρωπον διαλέγεται. Τοιαῦτα δὲ πολ λὰ ταπεινὰ καὶ ἐν τοῖς θείοις εὐαγγελίοις εὑρίσκομεν· «Τὸ γὰρ παιδίον» φησὶν «ηὔξανε καὶ ἐκραταιοῦτο πνεύματι, καὶ χάρις θεοῦ ἦν ἐπ' αὐτό», καὶ πάλιν· «Ἰησοῦς προέκοπτεν ἡλικίᾳ καὶ σοφίᾳ καὶ χάριτι παρὰ θεῷ καὶ ἀνθρώποις», οὕτως εὐχόμενος ἔλεγεν· «Πάτερ, εἰ δυνατόν, παρελθέτω ἀπ' ἐμοῦ τὸ ποτήριον τοῦτο.» Ὅτι δὲ ταῦτα ἀνθρώπινα ἦν, ὁμολογεῖν οἶμαι καὶ αὐτοὺς τοὺς τῇ θεότητι τοῦ μο νογεν οῦς πολεμοῦντας καὶ κτίσμα ταύτην ἀποκαλεῖν τολμῶντας. Καὶ ἐνταῦθα τοίνυν ὡς ἀνθρώπῳ ταῦτά φησιν· Ἔδωκά σε εἰς διαθήκην γένους, εἰς φῶς ἐθνῶν. Μαρτυρεῖ δὲ καὶ τὸ γένος τῇ φύσει· Ἃ γὰρ ὑπεσχόμην τοῖς σοῖς κατὰ σάρκα προγόνοις, τῷ Ἀβραάμ, τῷ Ἰσαάκ, τῷ Ἰα κώβ, τῷ ∆αυίδ, ταῦτα πεπλήρωκα νῦν καὶ διὰ σοῦ, ὃς ἐκ τῆς τούτων συγγενείας κατὰ σάρκα κατάγει, τὴν μὲν πρὸς τούτους ἐπαγγελίαν πληρῶ, τοῖς δὲ ἔθνεσι τῆς θεο γν ωσίας τὸ φῶς χορηγῶ. Ταύτης τῆς συγγενείας καὶ ὁ μακάριος ἐμνημόνευσε Παῦλος· «Ὧν οἱ πατέρες» φησὶ «καὶ ἐξ ὧν ὁ Χριστὸς τὸ κατὰ σάρκα ὁ ὢν ἐπὶ πάντων θεὸς εὐλογητὸς εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας, ἀμήν.» Ὁ γὰρ αὐτὸς ἐξ Ἰουδαίων μέν ἐστι κατὰ σάρκα, ἐπὶ πάντων δὲ θεὸς ὡς ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ πατρὸς πρὸ τῶν αἰώνων γεγεννημένος. Εἶτα προλέγει τὰς ἐσομένας θαυματουργίας· 7Ἀνοῖξαι ὀφθαλμοὺς τυφλῶν, ἐξαγαγεῖν ἐκ δεσμῶν δεδεμένους καὶ ἐξ οἴκου φυλακῆς καθημένους ἐν σκότει. Τυφλοὺς ἐνταῦθα τοὺς τὸ ὀπτικὸν τῆς διανοίας κακῶς διακειμένους καλεῖ, τοὺς δὲ αὐτοὺς καὶ ταῖς τῆς ἁμαρτίας πεπεδημένους σειραῖς καὶ τῷ σκότει τῆς πλάνης κατεχομένους. Τούτους τοῦ ζόφου τῆς ἀγνοίας ἐλευθερώσας καὶ τῆς ἁμαρτίας τὰ δεσμὰ διαρρήξας προσήγαγε τῷ τῆς ἀληθείας φωτί. 8Ἐγὼ κύριος ὁ θεός, τοῦτό μοί ἐστιν ὄνομα· τὴν δόξαν μου ἑτέρῳ οὐ δώσω. Καὶ δει κνὺς περὶ τίνων λέγει, ἐπή γαγεν· Οὐδὲ τὰς ἀρετάς μου τοῖς γλυπτοῖς. Ὁ γὰρ υἱὸς τοῦ πατρὸς ἔχει τὴν δόξαν καὶ ἐν τῇ τοῦ πατρὸς ἐπιφα νήσεται δόξῃ· μία γὰρ υἱοῦ καὶ πατρὸς ἡ θεότης. Εἰ δέ φησιν ὁ θεὸς ὡς ἑτέρῳ τὴν δόξαν οὐ δώσει, δείκνυται δὲ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ πατρὸς ἔχων τὴν δόξαν, δῆλον ὡς οὐχ ἕτερός ἐστι κατὰ τὴν οὐσίαν ἀλλὰ τὴν αὐτὴν ἔχει τῷ πατρὶ φύσιν. 9Τὰ ἀπ' ἀρχῆς ἰδοὺ ἥκασιν, ἃ πάλαι |152 a| φησὶ προ ηγόρευσεν. Καὶ <καινὰ ἃ ἐγὼ νῦν ἀναγγελῶ, καὶ πρὸ τοῦ ἀναγγεῖλαι ἐδηλώθη ὑμῖν.> Καινὰ τοῖς ἀγνοοῦσι τὰ προφη τικὰ θεσπίσματα, δῆλα τοῖς ἐκεῖνα πεπιστευμένοις· Καὶ πάλαι γὰρ αὐτά φησιν εἶπον ὑμῖν. Ἐπειδὴ δὲ τὰ καινὰ μηνύει, εἰκότως ὕμνον καινὸν προ σενεγκεῖν παρακελεύεται τῷ θεῷ· 10Ὑμνήσατε τῷ θεῷ ὕμνον καινόν. Ἡ ἀρχὴ αὐτοῦ ἄνω δοξάζεται, τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ δοξάζεται ἀπ' ἄκρου τῆς γῆς. Καθάπερ γὰρ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς τὴν βασιλείαν αὐτοῦ καὶ τὴν δεσποτείαν ὑμνοῦσι τῶν ἀγγέλων οἱ δῆμοι, οὕτω τὸ σεπτὸν αὐτοῦ
