having run together from the eastern diocese, 294 canonically ordained, the whole church having voted together and honored the man as if with one voice; which lawful ordination the council also accepted in common. And we recognize the most reverend and most beloved of God, Cyril, to be bishop of the mother of all churches, the one in Jerusalem, having been canonically ordained long ago by those of the province and having contended greatly against the Arians at various times. We exhort your reverence to rejoice with those who have lawfully and canonically been established among us, spiritual love mediating and the fear of the Lord suppressing all human partiality, making the edification of the churches more honorable than familiarity or favor toward an individual. For thus, with the doctrine of the faith agreed upon and Christian love established among us, we shall cease from saying what was condemned by the apostles: " 'I am of Paul, and I of Apollos, and I of Cephas'," but all appearing to be of Christ, who is not divided among us, God deeming us worthy, we shall keep the body of the church undivided and shall stand with confidence before the judgment seat of the Lord." These things they have written against the madness of Arius and Aetius and Eunomius, and moreover against Sabellius and Photinus and Marcellus, and Paul of Samosata and Macedonius. Likewise also they openly repudiated the innovation of Apollinarius, saying: " 'And we preserve the doctrine of the Lord's incarnation unperverted, neither accepting the economy of the flesh as soulless nor mindless nor incomplete'." 295 And Damasus, the all-praised, having learned that this heresy had sprung up, deposed and repudiated not only Apollinarius but also Timothy his disciple; and he made this known through letters to the bishops who direct the East, which I have thought it useful to insert in my history. "Letter of Damasus, bishop of Rome. " 'That your love pays the reverence due to the apostolic see, you grant the greatest favor to yourselves, most honored sons. For even if especially in the holy church, in which the holy apostle, sitting, taught how it is fitting for us to guide the helms which we have received, nevertheless we confess ourselves to be less than the honor. But for this reason, in whatever way possible, we strive if somehow we might be able to attain to the glory of his blessedness. Know, therefore, that long ago we deposed Timothy the profane, the disciple of Apollinarius the heretic, along with his impious dogma, and we do not believe that his remnants will have any force 296 for the future. But if still that old serpent, having been bitten once and twice, revives for his own punishment, who is outside the church, who does not cease from attempting to trip up certain unbelievers with his own death-bearing poisons, shun this one as a certain corruption. Nevertheless, you, remembering the apostolic faith, especially that which was set forth in writing by the fathers at Nicaea, remain steadfastly unmoved in the faith on a firm foundation; and do not permit your clergy or laity to listen to vain talk and obscure questions against it. For we have already once given a formulary, so that he who knows himself to be a Christian should keep that which was handed down by the apostles, as holy Paul says: " 'If anyone preaches to you a gospel contrary to what you received, let him be accursed'. "For Christ the Son of God our Lord, through his own passion, bestowed the most complete salvation on the human race, so that he might free the whole man, held fast by sins, from all sin. If anyone should say that this one had less of humanity or of divinity, filled with the spirit of the devil, he shows himself a son of Gehenna. 297 "Why then do you again seek from me the deposition of Timothy? who also here, by the judgment of the apostolic
