in his name the nations will hope. Thus says the Lord God, who made the heaven and established it, who made the earth firm and the things in it, and gives breath to the people on it, and spirit to those who walk on it; I, the Lord God, have called you in righteousness, and I will take hold of your hand and strengthen you; and I have given you for a covenant of a race, for a light to the nations, to open the eyes of the blind, to bring out the bound from their bonds, and from the prison house those who sit in darkness. That the words from *Jacob my servant, I will help him, Israel my chosen one, my soul has accepted him* are not prophesied concerning the people of the Jews will be clear to those willing to examine each word of the preceding text, but this is also clear from the accuracy of the Hebrew text; for neither the name Jacob nor Israel is found in it, whence it has also been obelized in the accurate copies of the Septuagint, because no other of the righteous except our Savior Jesus Christ, nor indeed he who was called the son of Isaac or Jacob and Israel, was such a one that the preceding words could 201 apply to him, I think no one would doubt; for even if one might fit *I have put my Spirit upon him* to others, what would one say about *he will bring forth judgment to the nations*, and what follows, and especially, *and in his name the nations will hope*? And how could it be plausible to apply *I have given you for a covenant of a race, for a light to the nations, to open the eyes of the blind, to bring out the bound from their bonds, and from the prison house those who sit in darkness* either to the people of the Jews, or to Jacob son of Isaac himself, or to any other of the righteous? But let these things be raised by us as questions to those of the circumcision; indeed, the gospel clearly teaches us that this prophecy was fulfilled concerning our Savior Jesus, when the Pharisees went out and took counsel against him, how they might destroy him. But Jesus, knowing this, withdrew from there; and many followed him, and he healed them all; and he warned them not to make him known; for to these things is added in the gospel, *that what was spoken by Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, saying,* *Behold, my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased; I will put my Spirit upon him,* and so on, as many things as are enumerated in the prophecy. He, then, would be the one who was also called Jacob, being the only-begotten Son of God; as it is said elsewhere, *It is a great thing for you to be called my servant, to establish the tribes of Jacob, and to bring back the dispersion of Israel.* This one, therefore, having heard from the Father among other things also this, *I have given you for a covenant of a race, for a light to the nations,* 202 brought forth judgment to the nations, so that they might live their lives with sound reason according to the holy gospel; and it is clear how the nations that believed in him hoped in his name, and how he has been shown to be a light to the nations, so that through the light of his word the eyes of the understanding of those long filled with these things were opened; but he also brought out from their bonds those formerly constrained by the chains of their own sins, and from the prison house of the devil those who sat in darkness because of their ignorance concerning the God of all. It is now for the lover of learning to examine each word of the prophecy, and in a manner analogous to what we have said, to apply the underlying meanings to the Christ of God. Ps. 21. *Be my witnesses, and I am a witness, says the Lord God, and the servant whom I have chosen.* And who would be the servant whom the Lord God chose, whom he also counts with himself as a witness of those who witness to him, if not he about whom it was also said in the preceding chapter, *Jacob my servant; I will help him,* and so on? which things were clearly shown to have been prophesied about our Savior and Lord Jesus. Ps. 22. *I made the earth, and man upon it, I with my hand made firm the heaven, I gave commandments to all the stars.* *I raised him up a king 203 with righteousness, and all his*
