of the camp at Logos, and having marched for the rest of the day and the greater part of the night, arriving at a place called Klepta in the local tongue, they encamped there for the rest of the night and until broad daylight. And after this, setting out from there, they came, by the time night fell, to a certain place not far distant from Byzantium, called Amblyopos. And waiting there, they arranged the army, and they assigned the two ladders, which were made of both ropes and wooden rungs, of which the emperor was in charge of one, and the grand domestic of the other, to twelve sol 1.301 diers each. of whom eight were Romans, and the rest Latins from Germany. But when the emperor heard that Germans also were assigned to the task, he summoned the grand domestic and ordered him to remove the Germans from those assigned to the ladders and to put Romans in their place; and that none of the nobles should be among those who were to be the first to ascend the walls, so that neither might these men look down upon those of lower rank, nor might the glory pass to the Germans, but that the deed might be that of the Romans alone. These things, therefore, were carried out as had been commanded, and when each of the ladders was entrusted to twelve Romans of the middle ranks, it was ordered for them that, when they came close to the wall, and the ladders had been pulled up by cables by those working from within, they themselves should ascend first and defend themselves, if anyone should attack, so that those after them might ascend at their leisure. And after them, not far distant, the emperor was marching on foot, leading a hundred chosen men, and after him, at a distance so as not to be mingled with each other, the grand domestic had as many others. Moreover, the horses of the two hundred were led by another two hundred mounted men, each leading one, following not closely, so that they might not alert those on the wall with the sound, but, if anything unexpected should happen, they might provide the horses to the two hundred by running up and might themselves assist as they were able. And another five hundred went, not far distant from them, themselves for the same reason. And at 1.302 Amblyopos was the protostrator, having the entire rest of the army drawn up in arms. Having thus arranged the army, they proceeded quietly, so that they might not give any indication to the guards on the walls. 59. The twenty-four men holding the ladders, therefore, eluding the guards, easily approached the walls, with Kamaris leading them towards those who were arranging the capture. And since it was not possible to escape the notice of those expecting them, they pulled up the ladders by letting down cables, and fastened them from the battlements. And the twelve on each ladder went up first. But the emperor and the grand domestic, together with those they were leading, since it was a full moon and the moon was shining brightly, yet because of the change from the fullness, with clouds running across the sky not continuously, but intermittently, whenever a cloud was over them, they would advance in the shadow; but when it passed by, lying down on the ground, they would wait for another cloud. And thus advancing little by little, they came near the walls. And when they were about a bowshot away, those on the walls perceived them and began to use shouts and war-cries and called the Byzantines to the walls, as enemies were present; but those outside ran towards the ladders, no longer caring about the noise, since those within had perceived them, and when they were at them, the emperor himself was eager to ascend first and urged the grand domestic 1.303 to follow him, thinking that if they themselves were on the walls, even if any of the enemy should attack, they would never dare to come to grips with them; but would hold back when they were recognized, and in this way they would be worth many to their own men. But the grand domestic did not permit it, but said that they were failing in their duty, if they were to do this. «For none of those left behind will ascend, not from a lack of courage in the face of dangers, nor from ill-will, but because each one, deeming it right to ascend first, all will be hindered by one another out of rivalry. And not only will no one ascend
