But O dearest and beloved of God, thrice-longed-for brother, remember your promise and do not forget your last and sweetest words to me, interceding for us your brothers and for all your race. For you know in what evils we are, you who have come to be in good and many blessings; for he who has been delivered from the darkness knows precisely the misery of those held in it. Beseech God, therefore, we ask, even now for all your brotherhood in Christ, you who never ignored anyone asking of you, nor deprived the needy of your necessary food. Pray for the brothers who hang upon their longing for you and are unable to bear the separation and cannot endure to restrain their grief, so that you may have us also with you, having received us, and entreat the all-good God that we may dwell with you, and prepare for us a place of rest, wrought through good practice from here, so that with you and after you, as also in the present life, we may also live together and rejoice together there, being deemed worthy to inhabit and to see the sorrowless and blessed life. And just as we, when you ran from the world to the monastic way of life, prepared a monastery and a house, so now you too, having advanced to the ineffable and divine and immaterial way of life, joyfully receive us, or rather take us to yourself and accompany and labor with us, as a brother who loves his brothers, and from those who attempt to hinder and prevent our arrival to you, set us free, (288) remembering that we also helped and labored with your brotherhood in this life. For we need your cooperation now more than you did then, when you attempted to escape from the nets of the world.
For our burdens are many, sweetest brother, which weigh down our humble soul and body, of which the most terrible of all is the loneliness and the great care for the brothers with us, for which you know me to be a most frantic zealot. For you have surely now come to know my disposition towards you, and that it was not from ever hating or detesting you that I rebuked and by every means secured you with admonitions, but from loving you exceedingly and burning unceasingly with longing for you. For now you see, I know well, having passed beyond the gloom and the mist of this body, and you behold my soul naked and its mind, just as you are now naked of the body. For having become godlike, you see in a more godlike way even all our affairs. Therefore, do not appear a liar to the agreements with us, nor forget a brother who loved you exceedingly and, if it is not too bold to say, laid down his very soul for you. But give a hand of help through your well-pleasing prayers, so that we may be deemed worthy to attain to you and to dwell with you in the Lord and God and our Savior Jesus Christ himself, making our dwelling in him, consorting with the ineffable light in the undefiled life, in the unutterable joy, in the indescribable glory and splendor, which is seen and worshipped in the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit unto the ages. Amen.
Discourse 22. (289)
Concerning faith. And a teaching concerning those who say it is not possible in the midst of worldly affairs to reach the perfection of the virtues. And a narrative from
the beginning, which is beneficial. Brothers and fathers, it is good for us to proclaim to all the mercy of God
and to make known to our neighbors his compassion and ineffable goodness toward us. "I, therefore, as you see, have not fasted, have not kept vigil, have not slept on the ground,
