name all the earth worships. Those who dwell in the sea and sail upon it, the islands and those who dwell in them. But especially do those do this who travel not only by land but also by sea so as to teach this name to those who are ignorant of it, whence not only mainlanders but also islanders sing hymns to the God of all. 11Be glad, O wilderness and its villages, the courts and the inhabitants of Kedar. The inhabitants of Petra shall be glad, they shall cry out from the top of the mountains, 12they shall give glory to God, they shall declare his virtues in the islands. Kedar he calls the descendants of the Ishmaelites, and Petra is the metropolis of the Idumaeans. Therefore, through these also the prophetic word showed the knowledge of God poured out upon the whole inhabited world. And we also see the fulfillment of the prophecy; for not only the inhabited world but also the uninhabited and all the islands have enjoyed the streams of truth. But I would wish to learn from a Jew what gladness the prophetic word proclaims to Ishmaelites and Idumaeans, and how the islands sing hymns to the God of all. But leaving them for the present, let us hold fast to the truth. 13The Lord, the God of hosts, shall go forth to shatter war, he shall stir up zeal, he shall give a sign and shall cry out against his enemies with strength. For he destroyed the power of death, he cut short the course of sin, he put an end to the tyranny of the devil, he extinguished the error of idols. 14I have been silent from of old; shall I also be silent forever and forbear? I have been patient like a woman in labor. I endured for a long time, I used great long-suffering, I bore being despised. I will reveal and I will cause to cease and I will dry up at once, 15I will make mountains and hills desolate, and I will dry up all the grass, and I will turn rivers into islands, and I will dry up marshes. Through all these things he has shown the cessation of error; for he destroyed the honored precincts of the idols on the mountains and the hills, and he gave over their memory to oblivion and dried them up like some grass, and having stopped the doctrines of the philosophers like the streams of certain rivers, he left not even a little moisture in them. Likewise he says also, I will show the marshes of poetry dry. 16And I will lead the blind in a way they have not known, and I will make them walk in paths they have not known. Again he calls blind those who are sick with unbelief and maimed in the sight of their mind. These he promises to lead into the unknown way; for they did not know the path of truth but traveled the byways of deceit. I will make the darkness light for them. Having delivered them from their former ignorance, I will deem them worthy of divine knowledge; for ignorance is like darkness, and knowledge like light. And the crooked things into straight. For he has made the difficult road of prudence and self-control and justice easy, having joined the hope of future goods to the labors of virtue. These are the words which I will do for them; and I will not forsake them, says the Lord. I will deem them worthy of these good things forever and will have all care for them also for the time to come. 17But they were turned back. But while I was giving these good things to the nations, the Jews who have the promises, even seeing these great wonders, turned the opposite way, denying my guidance. But let us who enjoy such great good things travel the straight way, following the God who guides and provides light, the one who |152 b| promises eternal life, so that we may obtain this also by the grace and loving-kindness of the supporting Savior, with whom to the Father with the all-holy Spirit glory <and> power is fitting and magnificence now and always and unto the ages of ages. Amen. 13 ΤΟΜΟΣ ΙΓʹ Be utterly ashamed, you who trust in graven images, who say to the molten images: You are our gods. Εὐφρανθήσονται οἱ κατοικοῦντες Πέτραν, ἀπ' ἄκρου τῶν ὀρέων βοήσουσι, 12δώσουσι τῷ θεῷ δόξαν, τὰς ἀρετὰς αὐτοῦ ἐν ταῖς νήσοις ἀναγγελοῦσιν. Κηδὰρ τῶν Ἰσμαηλιτῶν τοὺς ἀπογόνους καλεῖ, Πέτρα δέ ἐστι τῶν Ἰδουμαίων μητρόπολις. Ἔδειξε τοίνυν καὶ διὰ τούτων ὁ προφητικὸς λόγος τὴν εἰς ἅπασαν τὴν οἰκουμένην χυ θεῖσαν θεογνωσίαν. Ὁρῶμεν δὲ καὶ ἡμεῖς τὴν τῆς προρρήσεως ἔκβασιν· οὐ γὰρ μόνον ἡ οἰκουμένη ἀλλὰ καὶ ἡ ἀοίκητος καὶ αἱ νῆσοι πᾶσαι τῶν τῆς ἀληθείας ναμάτων ἀπήλαυσαν. Ἐγὼ δὲ ἐβουλόμην Ἰουδαίου πυθέσθαι, ποίαν εὐφροσύνην Ἰσμαηλίταις καὶ Ἰδουμαίοις ὁ προφητικὸς εὐαγγελίζεται λόγος, πῶς δὲ αἱ νῆσοι τὸν τῶν ὅλων ὑμνοῦσι θεόν. Ἀλλ' ἐκείνους ἐπὶ τοῦ παρόντος ἐάσαντες τῆς ἀληθείας ἐχώμεθα. 13Κύριος ὁ θεὸς τῶν δυνάμεων ἐξελεύσεται συντρῖ ψαι πόλεμον, ἐπεγερεῖ ζῆλον, σημανεῖ καὶ βοήσεται ἐπὶ τοὺς ἐχθροὺς αὐτοῦ μετὰ ἰσχύος. Αὐτὸς γὰρ κατέλυσε τοῦ θανά του τὸ κράτος, αὐτὸς τὸν δρόμον τῆς ἁμαρτίας ἀνέκοψεν, αὐτὸς ἔπαυσε τοῦ διαβόλου τὴν τυραννίδα, αὐτὸς τῶν εἰδώλων τὴν πλάνην κατέσβεσεν. 14Ἐσιώπησα ἀπ' αἰῶνος· μὴ καὶ ἀεὶ σιωπήσομαι καὶ ἀνέξομαι; Ἐκαρτέρησα ὡς ἡ τίκτουσα. Πολὺν ἠνεσ χόμην χρόνον, πλείστῃ ἐχρησάμην μακροθυμίᾳ, ἤνεγκα καταφρο νούμενος. Ἐκφανῶ καὶ ἐκστήσω καὶ ξηρανῶ ἅμα, 15ἐρημώσω ὄρη καὶ βουνοὺς καὶ πάντα τὸν χόρτον ξηρανῶ καὶ θήσω ποταμοὺς εἰς νήσους καὶ ἕλη ξηρανῶ. ∆ιὰ τούτων πάντων τὴν παῦλαν τῆς πλάνης ἐδήλωσεν· τὰ γὰρ ἐν τοῖς ὄρεσι καὶ τοῖς βουνοῖς τιμώμενα τεμένη τῶν εἰδώλων κατέλυσε καὶ τὴν ἐκείνων μνήμην παρέδωκε λήθῃ καὶ οἷόν τινα χόρτον ἐξήρανε, καὶ τὰ τῶν φιλοσό φων δόγματα καθάπερ τινῶν ποταμῶν ῥεύματα κατα παύσας οὐδὲ βραχεῖαν ἐν αὐτοῖς ἰκμάδα κατέλιπεν. Ὡσαύτως δέ φησι καὶ τὰ ποιητικὰ ἕλη δείξω ξηρά. 16Καὶ ἄξω τυφλοὺς ἐν ὁδῷ ᾗ οὐκ ἔγνωσαν, καὶ τρίβους ἃς οὐκ ᾔδεισαν ποιήσω πατῆσαι αὐτούς. Πάλιν τυφλοὺς τοὺς ἀπιστίαν νοσοῦντας καὶ τὸ ὀπτικὸν τῆς διανοίας πεπηρωμένους καλεῖ. Τούτους ὑπισχνεῖται ποδηγήσειν εἰς τὴν ἀγνοουμένην ὁδόν· οὐ γὰρ ᾔδεισαν τῆς ἀληθείας τὴν τρίβον ἀλλὰ τὰς τῆς ἀπάτης ὥδευον ἀτραπούς. Ποιήσω αὐτοῖς τὸ σκότος εἰς φῶς. Τῆς προτέρας αὐτοὺς ἀγνοίας ἀπαλλάξ ας τῆς θείας αὐτοὺς γνώσεως ἀξιώσω· ἔοικε γὰρ σκότει μὲν ἡ ἄγνοια, φωτὶ δὲ ἡ γνῶσις. Καὶ τὰ σκολιὰ εἰς εὐθεῖαν. Τὴν γὰρ δύσπορον τῆς σωφροσύνης καὶ τῆς ἐγκρα τείας καὶ τῆς δικαιοσ ύνης ὁδὸν πεποίηκεν εὔπορον, τοῖς πόνοις τῆς ἀρετῆς τὴν τῶν μελλόντων ἀγαθῶν συνάψας ἐλπί δα . Ταῦτα τὰ ῥήματα ἃ ποιήσω αὐτοῖς· καὶ οὐκ ἐγκαταλείψω αὐτούς, λέγει κύριος. Τούτων τῶν ἀγαθῶν αὐτοὺς διηνεκῶς ἀξιώσω καὶ πᾶσαν αὐτῶν κηδεμονίαν καὶ εἰς τὸν ἔπειτα ποιήσω χρόνον. 17Αὐτοὶ δὲ ἀπεστράφησαν εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω. Ἐμοῦ δὲ ταῦτα τοῖς ἔθνεσι τὰ ἀγαθὰ διδόντος οἱ τὰς ἐπαγγελίας ἔχοντες Ἰουδαῖοι καὶ τὰ μεγάλα ταῦτα θεώμενοι θαύματα τὴν ἐν αντίαν ἐ τράποντο τὴν ἐμὴν ἀρνούμενοι ποδηγίαν. Ἀλλ' ἡμεῖς οἱ τῶν τοσούτων ἀπολαύο ντες ἀγαθῶν τὴν εὐθεῖαν ὁδεύωμεν ἑπόμενοι τῷ ποδηγοῦντι καὶ τὸ φῶς χορηγοῦν τι θεῷ τῷ |152 b| καὶ τὴν αἰώνιον ὑπισχνου μέν ῳ ζωήν, ἵνα καὶ ταύτης τύχωμεν χάριτι καὶ φιλανθρωπίᾳ τοῦ ὑπο στηρίζοντος σωτῆρος, μεθ' οὗ τῷ πατρὶ σὺν τῷ παναγίῳ πνεύματι δόξα <καὶ> κράτος πρέπει καὶ μεγαλοπρέ πεια νῦν καὶ ἀεὶ καὶ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων. Ἀμήν. 13 ΤΟΜΟΣ ΙΓʹ Αἰσχύνθητε αἰσχύνην οἱ πεποιθότες ἐπὶ τοῖς γλυπτοῖς, οἱ λέγοντες τοῖς χωνευτοῖς· Ὑμεῖς ἐστε θεοὶ ἡμῶν. Τὴν τῶν ἐθνῶν προθεσπίσας μεταβολὴν μεταφέρει τὸν λόγον πρὸς Ἰουδαίους· περὶ γὰρ αὐτῶν καὶ ἤδη ἔφη· «Αὐτοὶ δὲ ἀπεστράφησαν εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω» τοσαῦτα θαύματα θεασάμενοι καὶ
