and the founding of Dardania by Dardanus, whom Homer says "cloud-gathering10.12.13 Zeus begat first," and the journey from Crete to Phoenicia; and in the time of Lynceus, the rape of the maiden and the establishment of the sanctuary at Eleusis and the agriculture of Triptolemus and the arrival of Cadmus at Thebes and the reign of Minos; and in the time of Proetus, the war of Eumolpus against the Athenians; and in the time of Acrisius, the crossing of Pelops from Phrygia and the arrival of Ion in Athens and the second Cecrops 10.12.14 and the deeds of Perseus and Dionysus, and Orpheus and Musaeus; and in the eighteenth year of the reign of Agamemnon, Ilium was captured, in the first year of the reign of Demophon son of Theseus in Athens, on the twelfth10.12.15 of the month Thargelion, as Dionysius the Argive says; but Agis and Dercylus in the third, on the eighth day before the end of the month Panemos; Hellanicus on the twelfth of Thargelion and some of those who wrote Attic histories on the eighth day from the end of the month, in the last year of the reign of Menestheus, when the moon was full; the one who composed the Little Iliad says, "it was midnight, and a bright moon was rising"; 10.12.16 others say on the same day of the month Scirophorion. But Theseus, being an emulator of Heracles, is older than the Trojan events by one generation; for Homer mentions Tlepolemus, who was a son 10.12.17 of Heracles, as having campaigned against Ilium. Therefore Moses is shown to precede the deification of Dionysus by six hundred and four years, if indeed he is deified in the thirty-second year of the reign of Perseus, 10.12.18 as Apollodorus says in the Chronicles. And from Dionysus to Heracles and the heroes around Jason, who sailed in the Argo, comes to sixty-three years; and Asclepius and the Dioscuri sailed with them, as Apollonius 10.12.19 of Rhodes testifies in his Argonautica. From the reign of Heracles in Argos to the deification of Heracles himself and Asclepius comes to thirty-eight years according to the chronographer Apollodorus. And from there to the deification of Castor and Polydeuces, fifty-three years; somewhere10.12.20 here also is the capture of Ilium. But if one must also believe Hesiod the poet, let us hear him: "And Maia, daughter of Atlas, bore glorious Hermes to Zeus, the herald of the immortals, having gone up to his holy bed. And Semele, daughter of Cadmus, bore him a glorious son, mingling in love, Dionysus of many joys." 10.12.21 Now Cadmus, the father of Semele, comes to Thebes in the time of Lynceus and becomes the inventor of Greek letters. And Triopas is contemporary with Isis 10.12.22 in the seventh generation from Inachus; and there are some who say that Isis is Io, because of her going (ienai) wandering through all the earth. And Istrus in his *On the Colonization of the Egyptians* says that she is the daughter of Prometheus. And Prometheus is in the time of Triopas, in the seventh generation after Moses; so that Moses is even before the generation of men among the Greeks. 10.12.23 And Leon, who treated the subject of the gods of Egypt, says that Isis is called Demeter by the Greeks, who lived in the time of Lynceus, 10.12.24 in the eleventh generation after Moses. And Apis, the king of Argos, founds Memphis, as Aristippus says in the first book of his *Arcadica*; and Aristeas the Argive says that he was surnamed Sarapis, and that this is the one whom the Egyptians10.12.25 worship. And Nymphodorus of Amphipolis in the third book of *Customs of Asia* says that Apis the bull, having died and been embalmed, was placed in a coffin (soros) in the temple of the honored deity, and from this he was called Soroapis, and later Sarapis10.12.26; and Apis is third from Inachus. Indeed, Leto is in the time of Tityus; "for he dragged Leto, the glorious consort of Zeus." 10.12.27 And Tityus was contemporary with Tantalus. Reasonably, therefore, the Boeotian Pindar also writes: "in time Apollo was born"; and it is no wonder, since indeed he is found serving Admetus together with Heracles10.12.28 "for a great year." And Zethus and Amphion, the inventors of music, were of the age of Cadmus. and if someone to us
