which was not tolerable to Bardas, but he was also very angry about this. When the emperor went on campaign, as has been said, the Caesar also campaigned414 with him, and Basil and those around him made frequent slanders against him to Michael, and because of these the plot against him was confirmed. But since the Caesar was invested with great power, those who were preparing the plot were afraid. One morning, when Bardas came forth from his own tent with splendor and a great bodyguard and approached the emperor, and when he sat down with him and was conversing with him, Basil, standing behind him, shook his hand, as if threatening the Caesar. But he, suddenly turning around for some other reason and seeing Basil's hand and understanding what was signified, threw himself at the emperor's feet. But those who had conspired against him hesitated to undertake the attack, until Basil himself first brought his sword against him. For thus the others, taking courage, surrounded Bardas and cut him to pieces limb by limb, and such was the end of his life that befell him. And the emperor, abandoning the campaign, returned to Byzantium and joined in marriage to Basil, Eudokia the daughter of Inger, who formerly was the mistress415 to the ruler himself; then he himself proclaimed him emperor, coming into the great church and placing the diadem upon him through the patriarch Photios. And a male child, Leo, was born to Basil from Eudokia, who was said to be Michael's rather, as Eudokia was pregnant when she was married to Basil. But Michael, always occupied with horse-races and drinking parties, and constantly getting drunk and losing his wits, which he did not possess even when sober, provoked Basil to his own murder. For after a horse race held at St. Mamas, in which he himself drove a chariot along with his magnates and won, when he reclined for dinner, Basil and Eudokia also reclined with him. A certain Basiliskianos, who was formerly an oarsman of the imperial trireme, but because of the beauty of his body had been taken up by the emperor and become intimate with him, was then standing by the dining emperor and was extolling him, for having driven the chariot so skillfully and artfully. And he (for he had already drunk unmixed wine and his mind was clouded), 416 pleased by the praises, gave him the purple-red sandals and ordered him to put them on, and proclaimed him emperor. But when he hesitated and looked towards Basil, the emperor grew angry. But Basil motioned to him to obey and put them on; and he, taking them, put them on. And the emperor said angrily to Basil, "The insignia of royalty are more suited to this man than to you. Or is it not permitted for me, as I have made you emperor, to make another one too?" From this, Basil, fearing both for his reign and his life, planned to act before he should suffer, and having shared his plan with others, when Michael, having again indulged in drinking unmixed wine at dinner, was already stupefied and had been led by the hand to his own bedchamber in the palace at St. Mamas and reclined, and had been overcome by a very deep sleep, first Basil, going out, broke the locks of the imperial bedchamber, so that those moving about the bedchamber would not be able to lock the doors, and then taking his fellow conspirators he went away. Since those who were sleeping before the chamber were few and tried to prevent them, 417 a commotion was raised, and the emperor was awakened. But when one of those with Basil entered and raised his sword against Michael, he raised his hands, and the man, striking both of them, cut them off and returned to the others. But he, being unable to flee, walking unsteadily from the wine and being tripped up by his drunkenness, lay there wailing terribly, and another of those with Basil, seeing him still alive, rushed in and, having thrust the sword against his chest, drove it through to his belly, so that his entrails also fell out of it. Thus, then, life left Michael, in a manner worthy of his life. But Basil immediately went to the palace and, having become master of it, sent some of the bedchamber
