laboriously and with groans and tears, and, as if the Lord were bodily present, so he fell down at His immaculate feet and like a blind man he asked to be shown mercy and to see again with his soul. And as the evening prayer was added, it lasted until midnight, with him not at all becoming listless or negligent during the time of prayer, or any member of his body moving at all, even to the turning of an eye or a glance upwards, but thus he stood motionless, like some pillar or as someone incorporeal.

So as he stood one time and was saying "O God, be merciful to me a sinner" with his mind rather than with his mouth, a divine illumination suddenly shone richly from above and filled the whole place. And when this happened, the young man did not know and forgot whether he was in a house or that he was under a roof. For he saw only light on all sides and did not even know if he was treading on the earth. There was no fear in him of falling, nor care for the world, nor did any of those things which assail men who wear a body assail his mind then, but being entirely with the immaterial light and seeming to have become light himself and having forgotten the entire world, he was filled with tears and inexpressible joy and exultation. Then his mind ascended to heaven and he beheld another light, clearer than the one near him. And marvelously, standing near that light, there appeared to him that aforementioned holy and angel-like elder, the one who had given him the commandment and the book.

(293) So when I heard these things, I considered that the intercession of this holy man had greatly cooperated with him and that God had again arranged to show the young man what a height of virtue this holy man possessed.

And when this vision had passed and the young man, as he said, had come to himself again, he was held by joy and astonishment and wept from his heart, and sweetness accompanied his tears. Finally, he fell upon his bed and at that very hour the rooster crowed and indicated it was the middle of the night. And after a little while the churches signaled for Matins, and he rose up to chant as was his custom, not even having a thought of sleep during that night.

These things happened as God knows, who also did them by judgments which He understands, with that young man having done nothing more, except what you have heard, with right faith and unwavering hope. Let no one say, therefore, that he did these things as a test; for he neither said this nor thought it even in his mind (for he who tests and tries does not possess faith), but that young man, having cast off every other passionate and pleasure-loving thought, so, as he swore, cared for the things spoken by his own conscience, as to be insensible in all other perceptible matters of life and not even to partake of food and drink with pleasure or too frequently.

Have you heard, my brothers, how much faith in God can do, when it is confirmed by works? Have you learned that neither is youth to be rejected nor old age profitable, if there is not understanding and fear of God? Have you learned that not even the middle of a city (294) hinders us from working the commandments of God, if we are zealous and watchful, nor does quiet or withdrawal from the world profit, if we are lazy and negligent? We all surely hear of David and marvel and say that there was one David and there has been no other, and behold, here is something even greater than David. For he received testimony from God and was anointed a prophet and a king and became a partaker of the Holy Spirit and he had many proofs concerning God; so having sinned and been deprived of the grace of the Spirit and having the gift of prophecy taken away and having been alienated from his customary conversation with God, if he sought these things again, remembering the grace from which he had fallen, what
