But when Athenodorus grew old, he asked to depart to his homeland; for he said that Caesar was perfect in all philosophy and action. But he barely permitted his departure. And as he was about to depart, he embraced him, and leaning to his ear, he urged that whenever he became angry, he should not command what was to be done before he had recited to himself the 24 letters; for he knew his quick temper and volatility. And Caesar, understanding, said, "Well done, you have reminded me that I am imperfect and in need of your teaching. For this reason I will not allow you to set foot in your homeland for the time being." In his second year the indictions were devised and the bissextile day, and he set forth civil laws. And Virgil was known among the Romans as a poet. We know, therefore, that on the same day on which He created the luminaries, Christ our true God was born, being the sun of righteousness. Ἀντώνιος δὲ ὁ στρατηγὸς καὶ ὕπατος Ῥωμαίων, ὥς φησι ∆ίων ὁ Κόκκειος, ἀνελὼν Βροῦτον καὶ Κάσιον τοὺς φονευτὰς Ἰουλίου Καίσαρος, τὸν στρατὸν ἀναλαβὼν ἦλθεν ἐν Συρίᾳ. ἔρωτι δὲ βληθεὶς Κλεοπάτρας ἀντῆρεν Αὐγούστῳ Καίσαρι· ὅθεν ἐπαν ελθεῖν εἰς Ῥώμην οὐκ ἐγνώκει ὡς λόγον ἀποδώσων. οὗτος ὁ Ἀντώνιος μετὰ Κλεοπάτρας Ἀλεξανδρείας καὶ Αἰγύπτου ἀνταρσίαν βουλευσάμενος προσέχωσε τὸν Ἀλεξανδρείας τῆς πόλεως καὶ Φάρου τῆς νήσου μεταξὺ διακείμενον θαλάσσιον πορθμόν, ὡσεὶ τέσσαρα μίλια ἔχοντα διάστημα. τοῦτον οὖν τὸν πορθμὸν χειρὶ πολλῇ καὶ σπουδῇ καὶ δαπάνῃ, ∆εξιοφάνους μηχανικοῦ τοῦ ἔργου προηγουμένου, συντελέσαντες ἤπειρον καὶ βατὸν εἶναι παρεσκεύα σαν ἄβατον ὄντα τὸ πρότερον, καὶ ἀκωλύτως ἐξεῖναι πρὸς τὴν Φάρον διαβαίνειν.
