and hearing and mind, and never entered into the heart of man, we, like irrational animals, prefer only the earth (297) and the things from the earth given to us through great compassion for the sufficient need of the body, so that being nourished moderately from these things, our soul too might make its journey upward unhindered, being nourished, it too, clearly, with the intelligible food, the one from the Spirit, according to the measure of its purification and ascent.

For this is man, and for this we were created and for this we were brought forth, so that having received small benefits here, through thanksgiving and goodwill toward God we might enjoy there the greater and eternal things. But alas, because we care not at all for the things to come, we are ungrateful even for the things in our hands and we become equal to demons or even worse, if one must speak the truth. And for this reason we need greater punishment, inasmuch as we have received greater benefits and we know God became as we are for our sake, apart from sin alone, so that He might deliver us from error and free us from sin. But what must I say? In all these things we truly believe in word only, but in deeds we deny. Is Christ not named everywhere, in cities, in villages, in monasteries and on mountains? Seek, if you will, and search carefully, if they keep His commandments; and you will scarcely find, in truth, one in thousands and myriads who is a Christian in deed and word. Has not our Lord and God said through the holy Gospel: "He who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also, and greater things than these will he do"? Who then among us dares to say: "I do the works of Christ and I believe rightly in Christ?" Do you not see, brothers, how we shall be found unbelievers on the day of judgment (298) and we shall suffer a punishment worse than those who did not even know the Lord? For it is necessary either for us to be condemned as unbelievers or for Christ to be shown a liar, which is impossible, my brothers, impossible.

But I have written these things not to hinder withdrawal from the world, but rather encouraging a way of life in the midst of the world, but informing all who encounter this narrative that he who wishes to do good in any place has received the ability from God. And in another way, this story is even more an encouragement toward withdrawal. For if that man, who lived in the midst of the world and never thought about renunciation or poverty or obedience, was thus shown mercy, having believed from his soul and called upon God, how many more goods must those expect to receive who leave behind all the things of this life and all people at once and give over their own very souls to death for God's sake, as God Himself commanded? For indeed, he who has begun to do good things with unwavering faith and wholehearted purpose and to perceive the benefit that comes from them, will know of himself that a great obstacle for those who have chosen to live according to God is the care of the world and the way of life in it. For the aforementioned story about this young man is both wonderful and strange, and we have not heard if such a thing has happened to anyone else. And if it has happened to some or will happen, let them know that they will fall from such a good thing, unless they quickly withdraw from the world, since I learned this too with accuracy from that young man.

(299) For later I met him after he had become a monk, spending his third or even fourth year in the monastic life and being in the thirty-second year of his physical age. For I knew him well, as he was a friend and raised with me, which is why he added and related these things to me: "That after that wondrous change and the superhuman help that came to me, not many days, he says, had passed and continuous temptations of life fell upon me, by which I saw myself being hindered from secret works and from the good according to

καί ἀκοήν καί διάνοιαν καί οὐδέ ἐπί καρδίαν ποτέ ἀνέβη ἀνθρώπου, ἡμεῖς ὥσπερ ἄλογα ζῷα προτιμῶμεν γῆν μόνην (297) καί τά ἀπό γῆς ἡμῖν δια πολλήν εὐσπλαγχνίαν ἀναδιδόμενα εἰς αὐτάρκη χρείαν τοῦ σώματος, ἵνα ἐκ τούτων συμμέτρως τρεφόμενοι, καί ἡ ψυχή ἡμῶν ἀνεμποδίστως τήν πρός τά ἄνω ποιῆται πορείαν, τρεφομένη καί αὐτή δηλονότι τήν νοεράν τροφήν, τήν ἐκ Πνεύματος, κατά τό μέτρον τῆς καθάρσεως καί τῆς ἀναβάσεως.

Τοῦτο γάρ ἄνθρωπος καί εἰς τοῦτο ἐκτίσθημεν καί διά τοῦτο παρήχθημεν, ἵνα ἐνταῦθα μικρά εὐεργετηθέντες, διά τῆς εὐχαριστίας καί τῆς πρός Θεόν εὐνοίας ἐκεῖσε τά μείζονα καί αἰωνίζοντα ἀπολαύσωμεν. Ἀλλ᾿ οἴμοι, ὅτι περί τῶν μελλόντων μηδόλως φροντίζοντες ἀχαριστοῦμεν καί περί τῶν ἐν χερσίν αὐτῶν καί ἴσοι δαιμόνων γινόμεθα ἤ καί χείρονες, εἰ δεῖ τήν ἀλήθειαν εἰπεῖν. Καί διά τοῦτο πλείονος καί τῆς τιμωρίας δεόμεθα, ὅσῳ καί πλεῖον εὐεργετήθημεν καί γνωρίζομεν Θεόν δι᾿ ἡμᾶς γενόμενον ὡς ἡμεῖς, ἁμαρτίας μόνης ἐκτός, ἵνα τῆς πλάνης ἡμᾶς ἀπαλλάξῃ καί τῆς ἁμαρτίας ἐλευθερώσῃ. Ἀλλά τί δεῖ με εἰπεῖν; Πᾶσι τούτοις λόγῳ μόνῳ πιστεύομεν ἀληθῶς, τοῖς δέ ἔργοις ἀρνούμεθα. Οὐχί πανταχοῦ Χριστός ὀνομάζεται, ἐν πόλεσιν, ἐν κώμαις, ἐν κοινοβίοις καί ὄρεσι; Ζήτησον, εἰ δοκεῖ, καί ἐρεύνησον ἀκριβῶς, εἰ τηροῦσι τάς ἐντολάς αὐτοῦ· καί μόλις εὑρήσῃς ἐν χιλιάσιν, ὡς ἀληθῶς, καί μυριάσιν ἕνα, τόν ἔργῳ καί λόγῳ χριστιανόν ὄντα. Οὐχί διά τοῦ ἁγίου Εὐαγγελίου εἴρηκεν ὁ Κύριος ἡμῶν καί Θεός· "Ὁ πιστεύσας εἰς ἐμέ, τά ἔργα ἅ ἐγώ ποιῶ, κἀκεῖνος ποιήσει καί μείζονα τούτων ποιήσει"; Ποῖος οὖν ἐξ ἡμῶν τολμᾷ εἰπεῖν· " Ἔργα Χριστοῦ ἐγώ ποιῶ καί πιστεύω ὀρθῶς εἰς Χριστόν; ". Οὐχ ὁρᾶτε, ἐδελφοί, πῶς ἄπιστοι ἔχομεν εὑρεθῆναι ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῆς κρίσεως (298) καί χείρονα τῶν μηδέ εἰδότων τόν Κύριον ὑποστησόμεθα κόλασιν; Ἀνάγκη γάρ ἤ ὡς ἀπίστους κατακριθῆναι ἡμᾶς ἤ Χριστόν ψεύστην ἀποδειχθῆναι, ὅπερ ἀδύνατον, ἀδελφοί μου, ἀδύνατον.

Ταῦτα δέ ἔγραψα οὐχί κωλύων τήν ἀναχώρησιν, τήν δέ ἐν μέσῳ μᾶλλον τοῦ βίου διαγωγήν προτρεπόμενος, ἀλλά πάντας πληροφορῶν τούς ἐντυγχάνοντας τῷδε τῷ διηγήματι ὅτι ὁ θέλων ποιεῖν τό ἀγαθόν ἐν παντί τόπῳ ἐκ Θεοῦ τό δύνασθαι ἔλαβεν. Ἄλλως δέ καί μᾶλλον ἡ ὑπόθεσις αὕτη προτρεπτική ὑπάρχει πρός ἀναχώρησιν. Εἰ γάρ ἐκεῖνος, ὁ ἐν μέσῳ τῷ βίῳ στρεφόμενος καί μηδέν περί ἀποταγῆς ἤ ἀκτημοσύνης ἤ ὑπακοῆς ποτε λογισάμενος, οὕτως ἠλεήθη, πιστεύσας ἀπό ψυχῆς και τόν Θεόν ἐπικαλεσάμενος, πόσων ἀγαθῶν ἐλπίζειν μᾶλλον τεύξεσθαι χρή τούς ἅπαντα τά τοῦ βίου καί πάντας ἅμα καταλιμπάνοντας καί αὐτάς αὐτῶν τάς ἰδίας ψυχάς ἐκδιδόντας διά τόν Θεόν εἰς θάνατον, καθώς αὐτός ὁ θεός ἐνετείλατο; Καί γάρ ὁ ἀρξάμενος τά καλά πράσσειν ἀδιστάκτῳ πίστει καί ὁλοψύχῳ προθέσει καί τήν ἐξ αὐτῶν ἐγγινομένην ὠφέλειαν ἐπαισθάνεσθαι, αὐτός ἀφ᾿ ἑαυτοῦ γνώσεται ὅτι μέγα ἐμπόδιον τοῖς κατά Θεόν ζῆν ἑλομένοις ἡ φροντίς τοῦ κόσμου καί ἡ ἐν αὐτῷ διαγωγή. Ἡ γάρ ῥηθεῖσα περί τοῦ νέου τούτου ὑπόθεσις θαυμαστή τέ ἐστι καί παράδοξος καί οὐδέ εἰ ἐν ἄλλῳ τινί τοιοῦτόν τι γεγένηται ἠκούσαμεν. Εἰ δέ καί γέγονεν ἔν τισιν ἤ γενήσεται, εἰ μή ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου συντόμως ὑποχωρήσουσιν, ἐκπεσεῖν τοῦ τοιούτου καλοῦ γινωσκέτωσαν, ἐπειδή καί τοῦτο ἐξ ἐκείνου τοῦ νέου μεμάθηκα ἀκριβῶς.

(299) Μοναχῷ γάρ γεγονότι ὕστερον ἐνέτυχον, τρίτον ἔτος ἤ καί τέταρτον ἐν τῇ μοναδικῇ πολιτείᾳ διατελοῦντι καί τόν τριακοστόν δεύτερον τῆς ἡλικίας τοῦ σώματος αὐτοῦ χρόνον ἄγοντι. Ἀκριβῶς γάρ αὐτόν ἐγίνωσκον, ὡς φίλον ὄντα καί συνανάτροφον, διό καί προσθείς ὑφηγήσατό μοι ταῦτα· "Ὅτι μετά τήν θαυμαστήν ἐκείνην ἀλλοίωσιν καί τήν εἰς ἐμέ ὑπέρ ἄνθρωπον γενομένην ἀντίληψιν οὐ πολλαί, φησίν, ἡμέραι διεληλύθησαν καί συνεχεῖς μοι τοῦ βίου ἐπέπεσον πειρασμοί, ὑφ᾿ ὧν καί ἐμαυτόν ἑώρων πρός κρυπτάς ἐργασίας ἐμποδιζόμενον καί τοῦ καλοῦ κατά
