but also things beyond what is necessary; and one might see this being done by some even in the present. The parable of Lazarus also testifies to this, showing that that rich man did not even share with the poor man the crumbs falling from the table. But "You trampled the leftovers with your feet," was said metaphorically, as of sheep, eating the grass, and trampling the rest, and first drinking the water, then muddying it with their own feet. κʹ. For this reason, Adonai the Lord says these things: Behold, I am against you, and I will judge between a strong sheep and between a weak sheep. Then he speaks of the insolence of the strong. καʹ. Because you push with your sides, and with your shoulders, and you gore with your horns, and you drove out all the weak, until you drove them out, and my sheep were scattered to every passerby. And I will save my sheep, and they will no longer be for plunder. He has said everything as of sheep, shoulders, and horns, and sides; but through all these he has convicted the unjust dominion of those in power; nevertheless he promises security to the sheep. "And I will judge between sheep and sheep, and between ram and ram." I will judge, he says, and I will not 81.1161 overlook those who are wronged, but I will exact punishment from the wrongdoers. Then the promise of the common salvation of all. κγʹ. And I will raise up over them one shepherd, who will shepherd them, my servant David, he will shepherd them, and he will give them rest, and he will be their shepherd. Having said above, "I will shepherd," here he says that David will be their shepherd, whom he also calls a servant; but who is this? Or is it not clear that it is the Lord Christ, born from the seed of David according to the flesh? Therefore also a servant, as a man; and this according to nature, not according to rank; for if those who have believed in him are not servants, but sons, much more he himself, through whom the servants have enjoyed freedom, is not a servant, but a son. Thus also the blessed Paul says: "Who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant." And Isaiah also cries out from his person, saying: "Thus says the Lord, who formed me from the womb, a servant to himself to gather Jacob; and Israel will be gathered to him; Behold, I have given you as a covenant of the people, as a light to the nations, that you should be for salvation to the end of the earth." And this: "And Jacob my child, I will help him." In the Hebrew, it reads, "My servant." And the divine evangelist also applied this testimony to our Lord Jesus. Therefore he is called a servant, as a man, and this, as I said, not according to rank, but according to nature; for he took the form of a servant. And concerning the shepherd of the sheep being one, the Lord also said in the Gospels: "And I have other sheep that are not of this fold, and I must bring them also, and they will hear my voice, and there will be one flock, one shepherd." Then he adds: κδʹ. And I the Lord will be their God, and my servant David a ruler in their midst. And he shows the truthfulness of what has been said by what he adds. "I the Lord have spoken." For the worthiness of the one who has spoken is sufficient for the confirmation of the words. κεʹ. And I will make a covenant of peace with David. Of this Paul is the interpreter; for he cries out concerning Christ: "He himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of the fence." And this he also said above: "And I will raise up over them one shepherd," For one shepherds both those who have believed from the Gentiles and those from the Jews. "And I will make evil beasts disappear from the land." Both the hordes of evil demons, and men suffering from beastliness, some being 81.1164 changed, and becoming rational, and being completely freed from being beasts, others being stopped by death. "And they will dwell in the wilderness with confidence, and they will sleep in the forests." Both are fruitless; but he says that they will both possess and cultivate the wilderness of the Gentiles, and in the forest of the Jews they will have rest, and healing. And
