you will grow old, and a moth will devour you; who among you fears the Lord? Let him obey the voice of his servant; you who walk in darkness, and have no light, trust in the name of the Lord, and stay yourselves upon God; behold, all you kindle a fire, and strengthen a flame; walk in the light of your fire, and in the flame, which you have kindled; for my sake these things have happened to you, you shall lie down in sorrow. Clearly the divinity of the Word is also demonstrated through the preceding texts, that he both pre-existed the incarnation, and as incarnate he was to suffer these things which are also recorded in the gospels. For who else could it be who says, my hand is not strong, 214 and what follows until, I will clothe the heaven with darkness, and its covering as sackcloth, but the Word of God? He therefore, having said such great things, adds, saying, The Lord gives me a tongue of instruction to know when I should speak a word; and again he adds the rest, saying, And I am not disobedient, nor do I contradict; I have set my back to scourges, and my cheeks to blows, and up to the point, for he who justifies me is near. For we say that the Word suffered in power, suffering along with the man he assumed. We do not know, therefore, if anyone will be able to give an account of the preceding prophecy, without accepting that there is a second hypostasis of God the Word after the first and unbegotten Father and God of all; we, however, being rightly persuaded that this is indeed God the Word, believe him to be the one who here says along with the other things, I will clothe the heaven with darkness, and who adds, from the person of the man he assumed, The Lord gives me a tongue of instruction to know when I should speak a word. To whom else but the man of our Savior would it be fitting to say also, who is he that contends with me? let him stand against me; or about whom could the words be spoken from, who among you fears the Lord, let him obey the voice of his servant, if not about Christ alone, who according to the scriptures despised shame, and emptied himself and humbled himself even to scourges, when according to the preceding prophecy about him Pilate, having scourged him, handed him over to be crucified, and then also he endured blows 215 and spitting, when at his words the high priest, tearing his clothes, declared that he had blasphemed; for then they spat in his face and struck him, and others slapped him, saying, Prophesy to us, Christ, who is it that struck you? But it seems that the things at the beginning of the chapter are said concerning the synagogue of the Jews; for behold, he says, for your sins you were sold; and for your iniquities I sent your mother away. For he came to the lost sheep of the house of Israel, and found no man among them, but he also called them first; but the people were not obedient. For which reason he says, because I came and there was no man; I called and there was no one who obeyed; but the things at the end of the pericope are consequently referred, after their rejection, to the calling from the Gentiles; from, who among you fears the Lord, let him hearken to the voice of his servant. For we were truly those who walked in darkness; and before the coming of our Savior we had no light, but now through the grace of God we have trusted in the name of the Lord, and are stayed upon God; but to those who did not believe in Christ, to whom it was also said above, behold, all of you shall grow old as a garment, and a moth shall devour you, the word adds, saying, behold, all of you burn as a fire, and the rest; in which clearly also, for my sake these things have happened to you, is spoken from the person of Christ, reproaching them and convicting the transgression of the Jewish people which was committed against him. 216 Ps. 20. Thus says the Lord: For your sake my name is continually blasphemed among the Gentiles; for this reason my people shall know my name; for this reason in that day that I myself am he that speaks, I am present
