XI 1. PREFACE CONCERNING THE SUBJECT The tenth book, then, which precedes the present volume of the Evangelical Preparation, established not by my own words, but by external testimonies, the probability that the Greeks, having contributed no wisdom of their own, except only for their skill and eloquence in words, but having pilfered everything from barbarians, did not fail to know the Hebrew oracles and to have made use of these in part, because not even out of ambition for their own writings did they keep their hands clean from theft. thieves
