wisdom is found, but in a long and full life, knowledge; for accurate experience is a teacher, having taken the revelation from above as a co-worker; enjoying which, and being enlightened by its splendor, may we never miss the truth, in Christ Jesus our Lord, with whom be glory to the Father, with the Holy Spirit, now and forever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
VOLUME 14. CHAPTER 35. 1-4. And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: Son of man, turn
your face toward Mount Seir, and prophesy against it, and say to it: Thus says the Lord Adonai: Behold, I am against you, Mount Seir, and I will stretch out my hand against you, and I will make you a desolation, and you will be desolate. And in your cities I will make a desolation, and you will be a wasteland, and you will know that I am the Lord. Seir is a mountain of Idumea, as we have already said before; and the Idumeans, tracing their lineage from Esau, were exceedingly hostile and ill-disposed toward the Jews, for which reason they also rejoiced at the calamities brought upon them; to these the God of all threatens utter desolation. And the phrase, "I will stretch out my hand against you," he has used metaphorically from those who strike with their hands, 81.1172 showing the vehemence of his anger. Yet we know that the divine nature is impassible, and that such words are measured by the capacity of the hearers. Having thus threatened the punishment, he also brings forward the cause: 5. Because you have had an everlasting enmity, and you have ambushed the house of Israel with deceit, by the hand of enemies, by the sword in the time of their affliction, and in the time of their final iniquity. He accuses the Idumeans of holding a grudge, and of plots secretly made against Israel. For he has indicated these things, having said: "You have ambushed the house of Israel with deceit by the hand of enemies, by the sword in the time of their affliction, that is, when their enemies came upon them, you fortified their roads against them with ambushes and snares, not even allowing them to flee. For thus also the other interpreters have interpreted it: "And you delivered up," he says, "the sons of Israel to the hand of the sword, in the time of their affliction, in the time of their iniquity before me." For while paying the penalty for the iniquity, or according to the Seventy, the injustice committed against me, he says, the house of Israel had an intensification of their calamities, through your deceits, and your plots with their enemies. Therefore, the prophetic word teaches us not to trample upon those who are being punished for their sins, but to weep with those who weep, according to the apostolic admonition. 6. Therefore, as I live, says the Lord Adonai, you have surely sinned against blood, and blood shall pursue you; for you have hated your blood, your blood will pursue you. -And here he calls "blood" not war, but kinship. For since, he says, you have made war on your own race, you will rightly be warred against by it, and the kinsmen whom you hated, I will raise up as enemies against you. And the kinsmen of the Idumeans are the Jews; for they trace their lineage from two brothers: the one from Edom, who is also Esau; the other from Jacob, who is also Israel. 7. And I will make Mount Seir a desolation, and a wasteland. Then he also tells the manner of the desolation. "And I will cut off from it man and beast, both him that passes through and him that returns." And these things indicate the extremity of the desolation, that he will strip it not only of its inhabitants, but also of travelers passing by; and he also foretells in what way he will destroy the inhabitants. 8, 9. And I will fill your hills with your wounded, and your valleys, and in all your plains; for those wounded by the sword will fall in you. And I will make you an everlasting desolation 81.1173, and your cities shall not be inhabited any more, and you will know that I am the Lord. Again, "everlasting desolation," and "shall not be inhabited any more," he has used according to the scriptural idiom. Therefore from what has already
