592 day by day, so that what the Savior promised to his friends may be fulfilled in you, saying, 'If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.' Having said these things, and many more worthy of his sanctified soul and theological tongue, the old man comforted the grieved soul of Ioasaph. then he sends him to certain brothers, who had their dwelling at a great distance, to bring the things proper for the holy sacrifice. And so Ioasaph, girding himself, fulfills the service very quickly; for he was afraid lest somehow in his absence Barlaam should pay the debt of nature and, having committed his spirit to the Lord, should inflict upon him the grievous loss of not receiving his final words, his final addresses, his prayers, or his blessings. And so, when he had most manfully traversed that long road and brought the things for the holy sacrifice, the most divine Barlaam offers the bloodless sacrifice to God. And having himself partaken, and having given also to Ioasaph of the immaculate mysteries of Christ, he rejoiced in the Spirit. And having partaken of their usual food, he again nourished the soul of Ioasaph with soul-profiting words, saying, 'No longer, O dearest son, will hearth and table bring us together as one in this life; for I am already going the final way of my fathers. It is necessary therefore for you to show your affection for me through the keeping of God's commandments, and through perseverance in this place until the end, 594 conducting yourself as you have learned and were taught, and being mindful always of my humble and slothful soul. Therefore, rejoice with joy, and be glad with the exultation that is in Christ, because for earthly and corruptible things you have received in exchange the eternal and incorruptible, and because the reward for your works is at hand, and the rewarder is already present, who will come to see the vineyard which you have cultivated and will richly give you the reward for your cultivation. For the saying is trustworthy and worthy of all acceptance, as the divine Paul proclaims; 'For if we have died with him, we shall also live with him; if we endure, we shall also reign with him' a kingdom eternal and unending, being illuminated by the unapproachable light, and being deemed worthy of the illumination of the truly blessed and life-creating Trinity. Such things Barlaam spoke to Ioasaph until evening and throughout the whole night, who was lamenting with uncontrollable tears and not bearing the separation. And just as the day was dawning, having finished his discourse with him, he raised both his hands and eyes to heaven, and having sent up thanksgiving to God, he said. Lord, my God, who are everywhere present and fill all things, I thank you, that you have looked upon my lowliness and in your orthodox confession and in the way of your commandments you have deemed me worthy to finish the course of my sojourning here. and now, O good and all-merciful Master, receive me into your eternal tabernacles, and do not remember how much I have sinned against you, in knowledge and in ignorance. And also protect this your faithful servant, over whom you deemed me, 596 your unprofitable servant, worthy to preside; deliver him from all vanity and the malice of the adversary, and make him higher than the intricate snares, which the evil one has spread as a stumbling block for all who wish to be saved. abolish, O Almighty, all the power of the deceiver from the face of your servant, and give to him authority to tread upon the death-bearing head of the enemy of our souls. Send down from on high the grace of your Holy Spirit. And strengthen him against the invisible hosts, so that he may be deemed worthy to receive the crown of victory from you, and that your name may be glorified in him, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, for to you belongs glory and praise unto the ages. Amen. Having prayed these things, and having embraced Ioasaph in a fatherly way, and a kiss to him
