her course. And again greet our people, for whose salvation I, a sinner, always pray. 145 {1To my child Naucratius}1 You do not cease to show your zeal, my child, both for the love of God and for the repose of me, the humble one, as you have now, sending the brother Callistus to the city for the necessary provisions; having received him with the letters from you and from those who gave them, we learned both sorrowful and very joyful news, the one on account of the wretched deserter Orestes, who, not enduring even a common affliction for the name of God, deserted to the adversaries, becoming a cause of rejoicing for both demons and the impious, the other on account of our brethren who are being saved and are bearing their hardships for God’s sake, and indeed on account of our common fathers. But if so-and-so and so-and-so have slipped, do not be surprised, but if anyone should be saved completely, glorify God for this; one must labor much in order to acquire immortality. Therefore, take courage, and do not grow weary in encouraging others as far as you are able. But since there is talk of our relocation, it is grievous to you, child, I know, as it is also to your brothers. But thanks be to the Lord, I take account of no one, even though I am a sinner, for the sake of the glory of Christ, for whom humble Graecia is greatly shaken. But how? That the elect may be made manifest, the trial not being set on fire. Inside, the fathers are beaten and starved; what great thing is it if they should banish us, the unworthy ones, elsewhere? The earth is the Lord's wherever I might be cast, whether alone or with others. But which of the brethren I shall choose as a traveling companion when I yield, I do not know, because my humble heart is divided over each one. However, as the brother will report, such is the plan. But if the Lord should grant that we see one another before departure, we may arrange matters more securely, both concerning this and other things; but if not, may Christ be with your spirit. Pray for me, the humble one. 146 {1To the same}1 We have already been brought safely, my beloved child, to the place where our good God was pleased for us to be confined for His holy name, having completed the journey in fifteen days without much hardship, both because of the rainless and mudless path and because our escort was disposed very compassionately and sympathetically and honorably toward our lowliness. We have settled, therefore, in Bonete in the home of the patrician lady of the Tourkos, having been treated very kindly by her and indeed also by the neighboring magistrates. The water of the lake is brackish and fishless, but nevertheless for us, for Christ's sake, even the salty is sweet and the fishless abounds with fish. Give us your prayers, therefore, that we may live here in a manner pleasing to God, being sheltered under His mighty hand, and that we may be moved in all our work and word according to His will. The brethren with Archippus remained behind; I do not know if they will manage to come, but we are not sending letters through them at all, being afraid. The journey is long and we do not know if you are free to send other brothers again, if indeed any are willing; however, even if they are found, it is difficult for them to bring any necessities, I do not know except perhaps books or anything else necessary, which is not available in this place even in small measure. It is also possible to come by boat; for from the coast of Lycia to here is a hundred miles. I also need materials for writing; but I am content with all that is within your power. So that, even if I do not yet receive a response from you, perhaps because of a blockade or some other difficulty, I bear it giving thanks to the Lord; for I know your intention, that even your eyes, if need called, you would have plucked out and given to me, my longed-for beloved. As long as you are able, my child, do not give yourself rest from helping your brothers, strengthening, admonishing, anointing (for we must keep watch over their souls, as those who will give an account to the Lord), and especially lend yourself to those who are imprisoned. Christ is with us, who conquered the world, who also exhorts us to conquer. therefore

διὸ
