But now they fall short of these things in this one respect, that they are held fast by the body and are covered and veiled, alas, like prisoners in a jail seeing the sun and its rays entering through a crack and not being able to perceive it whole or to behold it, having come outside the prison, or having peered out to look clearly into the air. And this is what grieves them, that they do not see Christ whole, even if they see Him whole, nor are they able to escape the bonds of the body, even if they have been released from passions and all attachment, but having been released from the many, they are held fast by one. For one who is bound in many bonds does not even hope to have found release from the many, but one who has been able to cut most of the bonds, but is held by one, suffers more than the others, and he hastens and always seeks its release, so that he may appear free, so that he may walk rejoicing, so that he may depart in haste, to the one for whom he had a longing, for whom he also sought release from the bond. (215) Therefore let us all seek Him, the only one who is able to free us from the bonds. Let us also long for Him, Him whose beauty stuns every thought, stuns every mind, and wounds every soul and gives it wings for love and glues and unites it to God forever. Yes, my brothers, run to Him with your deeds, yes, friends, arise, yes, do not be left behind, yes, do not speak against us, deceiving yourselves. Do not say it is impossible to receive the Divine Spirit, do not say it is possible to be saved without it, do not, then, say that anyone partakes of it unknowingly. Do not say that God is not seen by men, do not say that men do not see the divine light, or that it is impossible in the present times. This is never impossible, friends, but is very possible for those who wish it, yet only for those whose life has brought about the purification from the passions and has wrought a pure eye of the mind; but for the others there is truly blindness, the filth of sins, which both here and there will deprive them of the divine light and, be not deceived, will deliver them over to fire and darkness. See, friends, how beautiful is the Master! Yes, do not close your mind looking towards the earth, yes, do not be held fast by cares for earthly things and possessions, and by the desire for glory, and abandon this One, the light of eternal life! Yes, friends, come with me, be lifted up with me, not in body, but in mind and soul and heart,
