One man is not able to remove what has been rooted, nor is one letter, nor a short time. For it is impossible for the suspicions and the frictions arising from contradictions to be completely removed, without some trustworthy person mediating the peace. And if the gifts of grace were flowing upon us and we were able, both in word and in deed and by spiritual gifts, to persuade those who are opposed, it would have been necessary to venture upon so great a matter. But perhaps not even then would you have advised us to come alone for the correction, since there is the bishop, by the grace of God, to whom the care of the Church primarily belongs; who can neither come to us himself, and for whom to travel for now on account of the winter is not easy, or rather, completely impossible, not only because my body is exhausted from a long illness, but also because the crossings of the Armenian mountains a little later become impossible even for those who are very vigorous in their prime. But I will not refuse to signify these things to him by letter. However I do not expect anything noteworthy will result from the letters, considering both the strictness of the man and the very nature of letters, because a message sent across is not naturally able to persuade clearly. For it is necessary to say many things, and to hear many in reply, and to resolve what arises and to counter what lies beneath, none of which the written word can do, lying idle and lifeless on the page. But nevertheless, as I said, I will not shrink from writing. Know however, truly most revered and much-longed-for brother, that by the grace of God I have no private contentiousness toward anyone. For not having been meddlesome, I do not know the accusations for which each person is either responsible or is named. Therefore it is fitting for you to regard our intention in this way, as us being able to do nothing out of partiality nor being prejudiced to the slander of anyone. If only it might be the good pleasure of the Lord for all things to be done in an ecclesiastical and orderly manner. 156.3 But our most beloved son Dorotheus the fellow-deacon grieved us, reporting about your reverence that you hesitated to take part in their synaxis. And yet such were not the things we spoke of, if I remember correctly. To send to the West, however, is completely impossible for me, as I have no one suitable for this service. But of the brethren from there, if anyone chooses to undertake the labor on behalf of the Churches, he knows, of course, both to whom he will go and for what purpose and by whom he may be supplied with letters, and of what kind. For I, looking all around, see no one with me. And I pray to be numbered among the seven thousand who have not bent the knee to Baal. Except that they who lay their hands on all men seek our life also. However, not for this reason will we fall short in any of the zeal that is owed to the Churches of God.

157. To Antiochus

157.1 How heavily do you think I bore it, missing your company during the summer? And yet my time with others has not been such as to satisfy me, but still even to see in a dream the things one longs for brings some comfort to those who love. But you do not even write, so idle are you, that I reckon your absence to no other cause than your idleness with regard to journeys for the sake of love. But let us cease speaking of this. But pray for us and beseech the Lord not to abandon us, but, as He has led us past the temptations that have come upon us, so also to deliver us from those that are expected, for the glory of His name, in which we have hoped.

158. To Antiochus

ἐρριζωθεῖσαν εἷς ἀνὴρ ἀνελεῖν οὐχ οἷός τε οὐδ' ἐπιστολὴ μία οὐδὲ χρόνος βραχύς. Τὰς γὰρ ὑπονοίας καὶ τὰς ἐξ ἀντιλογιῶν παρατριβὰς παντελῶς ἀναιρεθῆναι, μὴ ἀξιοπίστου τινὸς μεσιτεύοντος τῇ εἰρήνῃ, ἀμήχανον. Καὶ εἰ μὲν ἐπέρρει ἡμῖν τὰ παρὰ τῆς χάριτος καὶ ἦμεν δυνατοὶ καὶ λόγῳ καὶ ἔργῳ καὶ τοῖς πνευματικοῖς χαρίσμασι δυσωπῆσαι τοὺς ἀν τιδιατιθεμένους, ἔδει κατατολμῆσαι τοῦ τοσούτου πράγμα τος. Τάχα δὲ οὐδ' ἂν τότε συνεβούλευσας ἡμῖν μόνοις ἐλθεῖν ἐπὶ τὴν ἐπανόρθωσιν, ὄντος τοῦ ἐπισκόπου τῇ τοῦ Θεοῦ χάριτι, ᾧ ἡ φροντὶς ἀνήκει προηγουμένως τῆς Ἐκκλησίας· ὃν οὔτε αὐτὸν ἐλθεῖν πρὸς ἡμᾶς οἷόν τε, καὶ ἡμῖν ἀποδημεῖν τέως ὑπὸ τοῦ χειμῶνος οὐ ῥᾴδιον, μᾶλλον δὲ παντελῶς ἀδύνατον οὐ μόνον καθότι τὸ σῶμά μοι ὑπὸ μακρᾶς ἀρρωστίας ἀπείρηκεν, ἀλλ' ὅτι καὶ τῶν Ἀρμενια κῶν ὀρῶν αἱ ὑπερβάσεις μικρὸν ὕστερον ἀδύνατοι γίνονται καὶ τοῖς πάνυ σφριγῶσι καθ' ἡλικίαν. Γράμματι δὲ αὐτῷ σημῆναι ταῦτα οὐ παραιτήσομαι. Οὐ μέντοι προσδοκῶ τι ἐκ τῶν γραμμάτων ἀξιόλογον ἀποβήσεσθαι, τῆς τε τοῦ ἀν δρὸς ἀκριβείας στοχαζόμενος καὶ αὐτῆς τῆς φύσεως τῶν γραμμάτων, ὅτι οὐ πέφυκεν ἐναργῶς δύνασθαι δυσω πεῖν ὁ διαπεμπόμενος λόγος. Πολλὰ γὰρ δεῖ εἰπεῖν, πολλὰ καὶ ἀντακοῦσαι, καὶ λῦσαι τὰ ὑποπίπτοντα καὶ ἀνθυπενεγκεῖν τὰ ὑφορμῶντα, ὧν οὐδὲν δύναται ὁ ἐν τοῖς γράμμασι λόγος, ἀργὸς καὶ ἄψυχος ἐν τῷ χάρτῃ διερριμμένος. Πλὴν ἀλλ', ὅπερ ἔφην, οὐκ ἀποκνήσω γράψαι. Γίνωσκε μέντοι, ὡς ἀληθῶς εὐλαβέστατε καὶ πολυπόθητε ἡμῖν ἀδελφέ, ὅτι οὐδεμία μοι πρὸς οὐδένα, τῇ τοῦ Θεοῦ χάριτι, ἰδιάζουσά ἐστι φιλονεικία. Οὐδὲ γὰρ πολυπραγμονήσας οἶδα τὰ ἐγκλήματα οἷς ἕκαστος ὑπεύθυνος ἤ ἐστιν ἢ ὀνομάζεται. Ὥστε οὕτως ὑμᾶς προσέχειν τῇ ἡμετέρᾳ διανοίᾳ προσήκει, ὡς μηδὲν ἡμῶν δυναμένων ποιῆσαι κατὰ πρόσκλησιν μηδὲ προειλημμένων εἰς τὴν κατά τινων διαβολήν. Μόνον εἰ εὐδοκία γίγνοιτο τοῦ Κυρίου ἐκκλησιαστικῶς πάντα καὶ ἀκολούθως πραχθῆναι. 156.3 Ἐλύπησε δὲ ἡμᾶς ὁ ποθεινότατος υἱὸς ∆ωρόθεος ὁ συνδιάκονος ἀπαγγείλας περὶ τῆς εὐλαβείας σου ὅτι ὤκνησας μετασχεῖν αὐτῶν τῆς συνάξεως. Καίτοι οὐ τοιαῦτα ἡμῖν ἦν τὰ ὡμιλημένα, εἴ τι ἐγὼ μέμνημαι. Ἀποστεῖλαι μέντοι πρὸς τὴν ∆ύσιν ἐμοὶ μὲν παντελῶς ἐστιν ἀδύνατον οὐδένα ἔχοντι τῶν εἰς τὴν διακονίαν ταύ την ἐπιτηδείων. Τῶν δὲ αὐτόθεν ἀδελφῶν, ἐάν τις αἱρῆται τὸν ὑπὲρ τῶν Ἐκκλησιῶν κόπον ἀναδέξασθαι, οἶδε δηλο νότι καὶ πρὸς τίνας ὁρμήσει καὶ ἐπὶ ποίῳ σκοπῷ καὶ πα ρὰ τίνων ἐφοδιασθῇ τοῖς γράμμασι καὶ ποταποῖς τούτοις. Ἐγὼ μὲν γὰρ ἐν κύκλῳ περισκεψάμενος ὁρῶ μεθ' ἑαυτοῦ οὐδένα. Καὶ εὔχομαι μὲν τοῖς ἑπτακισχιλίοις ἐναριθμηθῆ ναι τοῖς μὴ κάμψασι γόνυ τῇ Βάαλ. Πλὴν ὅτι ζητοῦσι καὶ ἡμῶν τὴν ψυχὴν οἱ πᾶσι τὰς ἑαυτῶν ἐπιβάλλοντες χεῖρας. Οὐ μέντοι τούτου γε ἕνεκεν ἐλλείψομέν τι τῆς ὀφειλομένης σπουδῆς ταῖς τοῦ Θεοῦ Ἐκκλησίαις.

157.τ ΑΝΤΙΟΧΩ

157.1 Πῶς οἴει βαρέως ἤνεγκα διαμαρτών σου τῆς συντυχίας κατὰ τὸ θέρος;

Καίτοι οὐδὲ ἡ τῶν ἄλλων τοιαύτη γέγονεν ὥστε μέχρι κόρου ἡμῖν προελθεῖν, ἀλλ' οὖν καὶ ὄναρ ἰδεῖν τὰ ποθούμενα φέρει τινὰ τοῖς ἀγαπῶσι παραμυθίαν. Σὺ δὲ οὐδὲ ἐπιστέλλεις, οὕτως ἀργὸς εἶ, ὥστε μηδὲ τὴν ἀπό λειψιν ἄλλῃ τινὶ αἰτίᾳ μᾶλλον ἢ τῷ ἀργῶς ἔχειν πρὸς τὰς ὑπὲρ τῆς ἀγάπης ἀποδημίας λογίζεσθαι. Ἀλλὰ τοῦτο μὲν πεπαύσθω ἡμῖν. Εὔχου δὲ ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν καὶ παρακάλει τὸν Κύριον μὴ ἐγκαταλιπεῖν ἡμᾶς, ἀλλ', ὡς ἐκ τῶν ἐπελθόντων παρήγαγεν ἡμᾶς πειρασμῶν, οὕτω καὶ ἐκ τῶν προσδοκω μένων ῥύσασθαι εἰς δόξαν τοῦ ὀνόματος αὐτοῦ, ἐφ' ᾧ ἠλπίσαμεν.
