salvation, having made in him the whole purpose of the economy, inasmuch as he was to be the head of the renewal of all things. For in us is the purification, but in him is the puri 95.837 ty; and the connection through faith imparts 95.837 to us the confidence that is through him. For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named. The work of the apostles is twofold, teaching and prayer, according to what those around Peter say: But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word. The bending of the knees signifies one falling down before God. Families are now named in two ways on the earth, there being fathers according to the flesh and according to the spirit. But in heaven they can be named only spiritually. Such was the teacher of Israel, the angel who brought the law. But there are many spirits, both greater than angels and more ruling; as Isaiah declares, saying: Not an envoy, not an angel, indicating the envoy as something greater than an angel, whom it is fitting to also be called Father by the Apostle. That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; being rooted and grounded in love, that you may be able to comprehend with all the saints. The request is great, he says, as from the great one who gives. For now we have truly been taught prayers worthy of the glory of God, when we have been instructed not to seek earthly things, but heavenly ones. And the request is a renewal of the soul and a restoration to what is possible in the Spirit, as it had left us when we were separated from God. What is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height. The incorporeal is immeasurable, but through things that are measured he has shown his infinite and incomprehensible nature. And he speaks of height and depth, according to what was said by the angel: Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace. For he also extended grace to those on earth through the coming of the Word. And to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge. In the partaking of Christ is true knowledge; and through knowledge, love, being within the soul and being known, produces an ineffable knowledge, which he also says is greater than that which is manifest and comes through words. 95.840 That you may be filled with all the fullness of God. So that, he says, with the sanctified heavenly Church being added, the whole fullness of God might be constituted by both heavenly and earthly beings. Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the Church in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

CHAP. IV. I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you. Not even to himself does he give all things

to understand, Paul, but he ascribes it to God, to grant even greater things than we ask; since even the power now supplied to us does not yet render the entirety of grace. But in Christ Jesus he speaks of the true glory, and in the Church, its likeness. Walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness; with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. To a holy life, he says, you are called, and the calling demands what is spiritual; and this is known by its opposition to what is carnal. But if in carnal things there is pride, and haughtiness, and quick temper, and opposition to one another, it is clear that the word seeks the opposite in us. One body. Through understanding one another. And one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling. Through being of one mind; for both need each other. And that which is according to the body, when that which is according to the spirit is not present, is rather a cause of strife; but that which is
