our own; for we are much better than walls, and more venerable than the floor. Why then, neglecting ourselves, do we pour out all our zeal on those things, which it is not possible to take when we depart, and often not even possible to possess while remaining here, when it is possible to be so rich, as to 60.539 appear most wealthy not only here, but also there? For he who carries his lands and his houses and his gold on his soul, wherever he appears, appears with this wealth. And how is it possible for this to happen, he says? It is possible, and with much greater ease. For if you transfer them to heaven through the hand of the poor, you will transfer them all to your own soul, so that even if death should then come upon you, no one will take them from you, but you will depart rich there also. Such a treasure did Tabitha possess; for this reason it was not her house that proclaimed her, nor her walls nor her stones nor her columns, but the bodies of widows clothed, and tears poured out, and death fleeing, and life returning. Let us also prepare for ourselves such storehouses, let us build for ourselves such houses. Thus we shall both have God as our fellow-worker, and we ourselves shall be His fellow-workers. For He brought the poor from not being into being, but you, when they had been brought forth and had come to be, did not allow them to be destroyed by famine and other hardship, healing and setting them aright, and from every side supporting the temple of God; than which what could be equal in terms of benefit and good repute? But if you have not yet clearly learned with how great an adornment He has adorned you, by commanding you to set poverty aright, consider this to yourself: if He had given you so much authority as to be able to set aright the heaven when it was falling, would you not have considered the matter an honor far exceeding you? Behold, then, He has now deemed you worthy of a greater honor. For that which is more precious to Him than the heavens, this He has permitted you to set aright; for nothing of visible things is equal to a human being in God's sight. For He made both heaven and earth and sea for his sake; and He rejoices more in dwelling in him, than in the heaven. But yet, though we know these things, we take no care or thought for the temples of God, but leaving them to be neglected, we build for ourselves splendid and great 60.540 houses. For this reason we are destitute of all good things, and poorer than the very poor, because we beautify these houses, which we cannot take and depart from here, neglecting those which it is possible to transfer with ourselves. For the dissolved bodies of the poor will certainly rise again; and God who commanded these things, bringing them forward then, will praise those who cared for them, and will marvel, that when they were about to fall, now by famine, now by nakedness and cold, they set them aright in every way. But yet, though so many praises are set before us, we still delay, and shrink from this good care. And Christ has nowhere to lay His head, but wanders about a stranger and naked and hungry; while you build suburbs and baths and promenades and countless chambers to no purpose and in vain, and to Christ you do not give even a small roof, but for crows and vultures you adorn upper rooms. What could be worse than this madness? What more grievous than this insanity? For these are things of extreme madness, or rather, whatever one might say, one will say nothing worthy of it. But yet, if we are willing, it is possible to ward off the disease, though it is grievous, and not only possible, but also easy, and not just simply easy, but also much easier to be rid of this ruin, than of the passions of the body, inasmuch as the physician is also greater. Let us then draw Him to us, and entreat Him to take hold with us, and let us contribute what is from ourselves, I mean choice and zeal. For He will need nothing else, but if He lays hold of these alone, He will bring in all that is from Himself. Let us therefore bring in what is from ourselves, that we may both enjoy pure health here, and obtain the good things to come,

Τί τοίνυν ἡμᾶς αὐτοὺς ἀφέντες, εἰς ἐκεῖνα τὴν σπουδὴν ἅπασαν κενοῦμεν, ἅπερ ἀπιόντας οὐκ ἔνι λαβεῖν, πολλάκις δὲ οὐδὲ ἐνταῦθα μένοντας κατασχεῖν, παρὸν οὕτω πλουτεῖν, ὡς μὴ 60.539 μόνον ἐνταῦθα, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐκεῖ φαίνεσθαι εὐπορωτάτους; Ὁ γὰρ καὶ τὰ χωρία καὶ τὰς οἰκίας καὶ τὸ χρυσίον ἐπὶ τῆς ψυχῆς περιφέρων, ὅπουπερ ἂν φανῇ, μετὰ τοῦ πλούτου φαίνεται τούτου. Καὶ πῶς ἔνι τοῦτο γενέσθαι, φησίν; Ἔνι, καὶ μετὰ πλείονος εὐκολίας. Ἂν γὰρ εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν αὐτὰ μεταθῇς διὰ τῆς τῶν πενήτων χειρὸς, ἅπαντα εἰς τὴν σαυτοῦ ψυχὴν μεταθήσεις, ὥστε κἂν θάνατος ἐπέλθῃ λοιπὸν, οὐδείς σε αὐτὰ ἀφαιρήσεται, ἀλλ' ἀπελεύσῃ κἀκεῖ πλουτῶν. Τοιοῦτον εἶχεν ἡ Ταβιθὰ θησαυρόν· διὰ τοῦτο οὐχ ἡ οἰκία αὐτὴν ἀνεκήρυττεν, οὐδὲ οἱ τοῖχοι οὐδὲ οἱ λίθοι οὐδὲ οἱ κίονες, ἀλλὰ σώματα χηρῶν ἐνδεδυμένα, καὶ δάκρυα ἐκχεόμενα, καὶ θάνατος δραπετεύων, καὶ ζωὴ ἐπανιοῦσα. Τοιαύτας καὶ ἡμεῖς ἑαυτοῖς κατασκευάσωμεν ἀποθήκας, τοιαύτας οἰκοδομήσωμεν ἑαυτοῖς οἰκίας. Οὕτω καὶ τὸν Θεὸν συνεργὸν ἕξομεν, καὶ αὐτοὶ αὐτοῦ συνεργοὶ ἐσόμεθα. Αὐτὸς μὲν γὰρ ἐκ τοῦ μὴ ὄντος εἰς τὸ εἶναι παρήγαγε τοὺς πενομένους, σὺ δὲ παραχθέντας καὶ γενομένους οὐκ εἴασας διαφθαρῆναι τῷ λιμῷ καὶ τῇ λοιπῇ ταλαιπωρίᾳ θεραπεύων καὶ διορθούμενος, καὶ πανταχόθεν ἀνέχων τοῦ Θεοῦ τὸν ναόν· οὗ τί γένοιτ' ἂν ἴσον εἰς ὠφελείας καὶ εὐδοξίας λόγον; Εἰ δὲ οὐδέπω σαφῶς κατέμαθες, πηλίκῳ σε ἐκόσμησε κόσμῳ, κελεύσας διορθοῦν πενίαν, ἐκεῖνο λογίζου πρὸς ἑαυτόν· εἴ σοι τοσαύτην ἔδωκεν ἐξουσίαν, ὥστε τὸν οὐρανὸν δύνασθαι καταπίπτοντα διορθοῦν, οὐκ ἂν τιμὴν σφόδρα σε ὑπερβαίνουσαν τὸ πρᾶγμα ἐνόμισας; Ἰδοὺ τοίνυν μείζονός σε κατηξίωσε νῦν τιμῆς. Ὃ γὰρ τῶν οὐρανῶν ἐστιν αὐτῷ τιμιώτερον, τοῦτό σοι διορθοῦν ἐπέτρεψεν· ἀνθρώπου γὰρ οὐδὲν ἴσον τῶν ὁρωμένων τῷ Θεῷ. Καὶ γὰρ καὶ οὐρανὸν καὶ γῆν καὶ θάλατταν δι' ἐκεῖνον ἐποίησε· καὶ αὐτῷ μᾶλλον ἐνοικῶν εὐφραίνεται, ἢ τῷ οὐρανῷ. Ἀλλ' ὅμως ἡμεῖς καὶ ταῦτα εἰδότες, οὐδεμίαν τῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ ναῶν ἐπιμέλειαν ποιούμεθα ἢ πρόνοιαν, ἀλλ' ἀφέντες αὐτοὺς ἠμελῆσθαι, ἑαυτοῖς λαμπρὰς καὶ μεγάλας κατασκευά 60.540 ζομεν οἰκίας. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο ἔρημοι πάντων ἐσμὲν τῶν ἀγαθῶν, καὶ τῶν σφόδρα πενήτων πτωχότεροι, ὅτι ταύτας καλλωπίζομεν τὰς οἰκίας, ἃς οὐ δυνάμεθα λαβόντες ἐντεῦθεν ἀπελθεῖν, ἀφέντες ἐκείνας, ἃς μεθ' ἡμῶν αὐτῶν συμμεταθεῖναι ἔνι. Καὶ γὰρ διαλυθέντα τὰ σώματα τῶν πενήτων ἀναστήσεται πάντως· καὶ παραγαγὼν αὐτοὺς τότε ὁ ταῦτα ἐπιτάξας Θεὸς, ἐπαινέσεται τοὺς ἐπιμελησαμένους αὐτῶν, καὶ θαυμάσεται, ὅτι μέλλοντας αὐτοὺς καταπίπτειν νῦν μὲν ὑπὸ λιμοῦ, νῦν δὲ ὑπὸ γυμνότητος καὶ κρυμοῦ, παντὶ διωρθώσαντο τρόπῳ. Ἀλλ' ὅμως καὶ τοσούτων ἡμῖν προκειμένων ἐπαίνων, μέλλομεν ἔτι, καὶ ἀναδυόμεθα πρὸς τὴν καλὴν ταύτην ἐπιμέλειαν. Καὶ ὁ μὲν Χριστὸς ποῦ καταλῦσαι οὐκ ἔχει, ἀλλὰ περιέρχεται ξένος καὶ γυμνὸς καὶ πεινῶν· σὺ δὲ προάστεια καὶ λουτρὰ καὶ περιπάτους καὶ μυρίους κατασκευάζεις θαλάμους εἰκῆ καὶ μάτην, καὶ τῷ μὲν Χριστῷ οὐδὲ μικροῦ μεταδίδως ὀρόφου, κόραξι δὲ καὶ γυψὶν ὑπερῷα καλλωπίζεις. Τί ταύτης χεῖρον γένοιτ' ἂν τῆς παραπληξίας; τί χαλεπώτερον τῆς μανίας; καὶ γὰρ μανίας ταῦτα ἐσχάτης, μᾶλλον δὲ, ὅπερ ἂν εἴποι τις, οὐδὲν ἄξιον ἐρεῖ. Ἀλλ' ὅμως, ἂν ἐθέλωμεν, δυνατὸν καίτοι χαλεπὴν οὖσαν τὴν νόσον ἀποκρούσασθαι, καὶ οὐ δυνατὸν μόνον, ἀλλὰ καὶ ῥᾴδιον, καὶ οὐδὲ ῥᾴδιον ἁπλῶς, ἀλλὰ καὶ πολλῷ ῥᾷον ταύτης ἀπαλλαγῆναι τῆς λύμης, ἢ τῶν σωματικῶν παθῶν, ὅσῳ καὶ μείζων ὁ ἰατρός. Ἐπισπασώμεθα τοίνυν αὐτὸν, καὶ παρακαλέσωμεν συνεφάψασθαι, καὶ τὰ παρ' ἡμῶν συνεισενέγκωμεν, προαίρεσιν λέγω καὶ προθυμίαν. Οὐδενὸς γὰρ ἑτέρου δεήσεται, ἀλλ' ἂν τούτων ἐπιλάβηται μόνον, τὰ παρ' ἑαυτοῦ πάντα εἰσοίσει. Εἰσενέγκωμεν τοίνυν τὰ παρ' ἑαυτῶν, ἵνα καὶ ἐνταῦθα καθαρᾶς ἀπολαύσωμεν ὑγείας, καὶ τῶν μελλόντων ἐπιτύχωμεν ἀγαθῶν,
