You keep the substance of the grass unburnt, and keeping it unchanged you change it all, and remaining grass it is light, but the light is not grass, but you unite the light to the grass without confusion, and the grass becomes as light, changed immutably? I cannot bear to cover Your wonders with silence, I cannot but speak of Your economy, which You wrought with me, the prodigal and fornicator; and I cannot endure not to narrate to all the inexhaustible wealth of Your love for mankind, my Redeemer! For I wish the whole world to receive from this and that no one at all be left empty of it, but first, O all-King, shine again in me, dwell in and illumine my humble soul, (223) show me plainly the face of Your divinity and appear to me wholly, unseen, O my God! For You are not seen by me at all, yet You appear to me whole; being wholly incomprehensible You will to be and become comprehensible to me, being uncontainable by the universe You become truly small, and in my hands as it were and on my lips You are seen like a light-formed breast and sweetness, flashing and turning, O strange mystery! Give me Yourself thus even now, that I may be filled with You, that I may kiss and embrace Your ineffable glory, the light of Your face, and be filled and then impart to all others, and departing I may come to You, wholly glorified, having become light myself from Your light I may stand beside You, and then I will be free from care of these many evils, I will be delivered from the fear of turning back again. Yes, give me this, Master, yes, grant me this, You who gave me all other things freely, unworthy as I am. For of this there is greatest need, this is the all; for even if now You are seen by me, even if now You have compassion, even if now You enlighten me and teach me mystically and shelter and guard me with Your mighty hand and are present with me and turn and make demons disappear and subject all things to me and provide all things for me and fill me with all good things, O my God, yet these are of no benefit to me, unless You grant me to pass shamelessly through the gates of death. Unless the prince of darkness should come and see Your glory with me and be utterly shamed, the dark one being consumed by Your unapproachable light, and all the opposing powers with him (224) will be turned back, seeing the mark of Your seal, and I shall pass through, trusting in Your grace, wholly untroubled, and I shall draw near to You and fall down before You, what benefit is there to me in the things happening in me now?

φυλάττεις ἀκατάφλεκτον τοῦ χόρτου τήν οὐσίαν, καί ἀναλλοίωτον τηρῶν ἀλλοιοῖς ὅλον τοῦτον, καί μένων χόρτος ἔστι φῶς, οὐχί τό φῶς δέ χόρτος, ἀλλά τῷ χόρτῳ σύ τό φῶς ἀσυγχύτως ἑνοῦσαι, καί χόρτος γίνεται ὡς φῶς μεταβληθείς ἀτρέπτως; Οὐ φέρω σου τά θαύματα τῇ σιωπῇ καλύπτειν, οὐ δύναμαι τοῦ μή λαλεῖν τήν σήν οἰκονομίαν, ἥν μετ᾿ ἐμοῦ ἐποίησας, τοῦ ἀσώτου καί πόρνου˙ καί τῆς φιλανθρωπίας σου τόν ἀκένωτον πλοῦτον μή διηγεῖσθαι ἅπασιν οὐ στέγω, λυτρωτά μου! Βούλομαι γάρ τόν σύμπαντα κόσμον λαβεῖν ἐκ τούτου καί μή κενόν τούτου τινά ὅλως καταλειφθῆναι, πλήν πρῶτον, ὦ παμβασιλεῦ, ἐν ἐμοί πάλιν λάμψον, ἐνοίκησον καί φώτισον τήν ταπεινήν ψυχήν μου, (223) δεῖξον θεότητος τῆς σῆς τρανῶς τό πρόσωπόν μοι καί ἀοράτως ὅλος μοι φάνηθι, ὤ Θεέ μου! Οὐδ᾿ ὅλως γάρ ὁρᾶσαί μοι, ὅλος δέ φαίνεσαί μοι˙ ἄληπτος ὤν ὅλος ληπτός θέλεις καί γίνεσαί μοι, ἀχώρητος ὤν τῷ παντί μικρόν οὖν ὄντως γίνῃ, καί ἐν χερσί μου οἱονεί καί ἐν τοῖς χείλεσί μου ὥσπερ μαζός φωτοειδής καί γλυκασμός ὁρᾶσαι, ἀστράπτων καί στρεφόμενος, ὤ μυστηρίου ξένου! ∆ός μοι σαυτόν οὕτω καί νῦν, ὅπως ἐμφορηθῶ σου, ὅπως καταφιλήσω σου καί κατασπάσομαί σου τήν δόξαν τήν ἀπόρρητον, τό φῶς τοῦ σοῦ προσώπου, καί ἐμπλησθῶ καί μεταδῶ τότε τοῖς ἄλλοις πᾶσι καί μεταστάς ἔλθω πρός σέ, ὅλος δεδοξασμένος, ἐκ τοῦ φωτός σου φῶς κἀγώ γεγονώς παραστῶ σοι καί τότε τούτων τῶν πολλῶν κακῶν ἀμεριμνήσω, φόβου ἀπαλλαγήσομαι τοῦ μή πάλιν τραπῆναι. Ναί, τοῦτο δός μοι, ∆έσποτα, ναί, τοῦτο χάρισαί μοι, ὁ τἆλλα πάντα δωρεάν δούς μοι τῷ ἀναξίῳ. Τούτου γάρ χρεία μάλιστα, τοῦτο τό πᾶν καί ἔστιν˙ εἰ γάρ καί νῦν ὁρᾶσαί μοι, εἰ γάρ καί νῦν σπλαγχνίζῃ, εἰ γάρ καί νῦν φωτίζεις με καί μυστικῶς διδάσκεις καί σκέπεις καί φυλάττεις με τῇ κραταιᾷ χειρί σου καί συμπαρῇς καί δαίμονας τρέπεις καί ἀφανίζεις καί πάντα ὑποτάσσεις μοι καί πάντα μοι παρέχεις καί ἐμπιπλᾷς τῶν ἀγαθῶν ἁπάντων, ὦ Θεέ μου, ἀλλά οὐδέν μοι ὄφελος τούτων, εἰ μή μοι δώσεις ἀνεπαισχύντως παρελθεῖν τοῦ θανάτου τάς πύλας. Εἰ μή ὁ ἄρχων ἔλθοιε τοῦ σκότους καί τήν δόξαν ἴδοι συνοῦσάν μοι τήν σήν καί αἰσχυνθῇ εἰς ἅπαν, ὁ σκοτεινός καταφλεχθείς ἀπροσίτῳ φωτί σου, καί αἱ δυνάμεις ἅπασαι σύν αὐτῷ ἐναντίαι (224) τραπήσονται σημείωσιν σφραγῖδος σῆς ἰδοῦσαι, κἀγώ δέ διελεύσομαι θαρρῶν τῇ χάριτί σου, ἀτρέμας ὅλος, καί πρός σέ ἐγγίσω καί προσπέσω, τί μοι τῶν νῦν τό ὄφελος ἐν ἐμοί γινομένων;
