to have come forth; but water called out the seed. Those who swear by the name of the Lord God of Israel and make mention of God not with truth nor with righteousness 2and holding fast to the name of the holy city and staying themselves upon the God of Israel, the Lord of Sabaoth is his name. What was said by the apostle about certain people is like these: “Having a form of godliness, but denying its power.” For the Jews indeed were very proud of Jerusalem, and they boasted as having been chosen by the God of all and they constantly carried the divine name in their mouths, not honoring it with truth but insulting it with falsehood. For this reason, the prophetic word, showing this name to be venerable and fearful, added: The Lord of Sabaoth is his name. For he is Lord not only of men but also of the heavenly powers. 3The former things I declared from of old, and from my mouth they went forth and were made audible to you. The calamities brought upon you I foretold beforehand, so that by frightening you with threats I might stir you to repentance, and you might not have experience of painful things; but since you disbelieved the words, I will show by deeds the truth of the words. For this he added: I did them suddenly and they came to pass. For you saw calamities which you did not expect. 4I know that you are stubborn, and your neck is an iron sinew and your forehead is bronze. Having been taught this, the divine Stephen also said to the Jews: “You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit, as your fathers did, so do you”; and through the prophet Jeremiah again the God of all said to them: “You have a harlot's forehead, you were shameless toward all.” The bronze forehead signifies this shamelessness; for just as the forehead of a bronze statue is not ashamed, so neither do you blush when transgressing, neither when being reproved nor when being punished. 5And I declared them to you long ago before they came upon you, I made them heard by you, lest you should ever say that my idols did them for me and lest you say that my carved and molten images commanded them for me. I foretold everything to you, both |160 a| the captivity and the freedom, so that you would not attribute the causes of these to idols, but would know that I have done both, the one on account of your transgression, the other on account of my love for mankind. 6You have heard these things and you did not understand; but I have also made audible the new things from now on which are about to happen, and you did not know them; 7and now they are coming to pass and not long ago and not in former days, and you have not heard them. Through all things he showed their lack of understanding and their foolishness and the laziness of their mind. Do not say: Yes, I know them. 8You have neither heard nor believed, nor from the beginning have I opened your ears. More clearly through these things he showed their disobedience; for they willingly stopped their ears, not wanting to hear the divine words. For I knew that you would surely deal treacherously, and you would be called a transgressor even from the womb. But your lawless purpose did not escape me; for I knew beforehand your ungrateful mind and that immediately upon being released from the slavery of the Egyptians you would forget the good deeds, and would turn to impiety. For he calls Egypt the womb and the exodus from there the birth. But nevertheless, knowing these things, I continued to do good to you, since you are called my people. For what follows makes this clear: 9For my name's sake I will show you my wrath and my glorious things I will bring upon you, so that I might not destroy you. He called the captivity wrath, and the unexpected freedom glorious things. 10Behold, I have sold you, but not for silver, and I have rescued you from the furnace of poverty. Not because I needed money did I sell you to the Babylonians, but exacting from you the penalty for your transgression, but nevertheless I will grant you freedom again. For he called slavery the furnace of poverty; for just as in a furnace the fire is hidden, and only the smoke appears above, so the captives do not dare to lament openly, but within, being set on fire by the flame of despondency, they send up a groan like some smoke.

ἐξεληλυθέναι· ὕδωρ δὲ τὸ σπέρμα ἐκ άλεσεν. Οἱ ὀμνύοντες τῷ ὀνόματι κυρίου θεοῦ Ἰσραὴλ καὶ ἐν τῷ θεῷ μιμνῃσκόμενοι οὐ μετὰ ἀληθείας οὐδὲ μετὰ δικαιοσύνης 2καὶ ἀντεχόμενοι τῷ ὀνόματι τῆς πόλεως τῆς ἁγίας καὶ ἐπὶ τῷ θεῷ τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ ἀντιστηριζόμενοι, κύριος Σαβαὼθ ὄνομα αὐτῷ. Τούτοις ἔοικε τὰ ὑπὸ τοῦ ἀποστόλου περί τινων εἰρημένα· «Ἔχοντες μόρφωσιν εὐσεβείας, τὴν δὲ δύναμιν αὐτῆς ἠρνημένοι.» Καὶ γὰρ Ἰουδαῖοι μέγα μὲν ἐφρόνουν ἐπὶ τῇ Ἱερουσαλήμ, ἐμεγαλαυχοῦντο δὲ καὶ ὡς ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ τῶν ὅλ ων ἐκλεγέντες καὶ τὸ θεῖον ὄνομα διηνεκῶς ἐν τῷ στόματι περιέφερον οὐκ ἀληθείᾳ τοῦτο γε ραί ροντες ἀλλὰ τῷ ψεύδει καθυβρίζοντες. Οὗ δὴ χάριν δεικνὺς ὁ προφητικὸς λόγος σεπτὸν τοῦ το καὶ φοβερὸν τοὔνομα ἐπήγαγεν· Κύριος Σαβαὼθ ὄνομα αὐτῷ. Οὐ γὰρ τῶν ἀνθρώπων μόνον ἀλλὰ καὶ τῶν ἐπουρανίων δεσπόζει δυνάμεων. 3Τὰ πρότερα ἔκτοτε ἀνήγγειλα, καὶ ἐκ τοῦ στόματός μου ἐξῆλθε καὶ ἀκουστόν σοι ἐγένετο. Τὰς ἐπενεχθείσας σοι συμφορὰς προηγόρευσα πρότερον, ἵνα σε φοβήσας ταῖς ἀπειλαῖς εἰς μεταμέλειαν διεγείρω, καὶ μὴ λάβῃς πεῖραν τῶν ἀλγεινῶν· ἐπειδὴ δὲ τοῖς λόγοις ἠπίστησας, δείξω τοῖς ἔργοις τὴν τῶν λόγων ἀλήθειαν. Τοῦτο γὰρ ἐπ ήγαγεν· Ἐξάπινα ἐποίησα καὶ ἐπῆλθον. Ἃς γὰρ οὐ προσεδόκησας συμφορὰς ἐθεάσω. 4Γινώσκω ὅτι σκληρὸς εἶ καὶ νεῦρον σιδηροῦν ὁ τράχηλός σου καὶ τὸ μέτωπόν σου χαλκοῦν. Τοῦτο δεδιδαγμένος καὶ ὁ θεῖος Στέφανος ἔλεγε τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις· «Σκληροτράχηλοι καὶ ἀπερίτμητοι τῇ καρδίᾳ καὶ τοῖς ὠσίν, ὑμεῖς ἀεὶ τῷ πνεύματι τῷ ἁγίῳ ἀντιπίπτετε, ὡς οἱ πατέρες ὑμῶν καὶ ὑμεῖς»· καὶ διὰ τοῦ προφήτου Ἱερεμίου πάλιν ὁ τῶν ὅλων θεὸς ἔφη πρὸς αὐτούς· «Ὄψις πόρνης ἐγένετό σοι, ἀπηναισχύντησας πρὸς πάντας.» Ταύτην τὴν ἀναίδειαν καὶ τὸ χαλκοῦν αἰνί ττεται μέτωπον· ὥσπερ γὰρ τὸ τοῦ χαλκοῦ ἀνδριάντος οὐκ αἰσχύνεται μέτωπον, οὕτως οὐδὲ ὑ μεῖς ἐρυθριᾶτε παρανομοῦντες, οὔτε ἐλεγχόμενοι οὔτε κολαζόμενοι. 5Καὶ ἀνήγγειλά σοι παλαιὰ πρὶν ἐλθεῖν ἐπὶ σέ, ἀκουστόν σοι ἐποίησα, μήποτε εἴπῃς ὅτι τὰ εἴδωλά μοι ἐποίησε καὶ ἵνα μὴ εἴπῃς ὅτι τὰ γλυπτὰ καὶ τὰ χωνευτὰ ἐνετείλατό μοι. Πάντα σοι προηγόρευσα, καὶ |160 a| τὴν αἰχμαλωσίαν καὶ τὴν ἐλευθερίαν, ἵνα μὴ τὰς τούτων αἰτίας ἀναθῇς τοῖς εἰδώλοις, ἀλλὰ γνῷς ὡς ἑκάτερα ἐγὼ δέδρακα, τὸ μὲν διὰ τὴν σὴν παρανομίαν, τὸ δὲ διὰ τὴν ἐμὴν φιλανθρω πίαν. 6Ἠκούσατε ταῦτα καὶ ὑμεῖς οὐκ ἔγνωτε· ἀλλὰ καὶ ἀκουστὰ ἐποίησα τὰ καινὰ ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν ἃ μέλλει γίνεσθαι, καὶ οὐκ ἔγνως αὐτά· 7καὶ νῦν γίνεται καὶ οὐ πάλαι καὶ οὐ προτέραις ἡμέραις, καὶ οὐκ ἤκουσας αὐτά. ∆ιὰ πάντων τὸ ἀσύνετον αὐτῶν καὶ ἀνόητον καὶ τῆς γνώμης τὸ ῥᾴθυμον ἔδειξεν. Μὴ εἴπῃς· Ναί, γινώσκω αὐτά. 8Οὔτε ἤκουσα<ς> οὔτε ἠπίστω, οὔτε ἀπ' ἀρχῆς ἤνοιξά σου τὰ ὦτα. Σαφέ στερον διὰ τούτων τὸ ἀπειθὲς αὐτῶν ἔδειξεν· ἑκόντες γὰρ ἔβυον τὰ ὦτα οὐδὲ ἀκούειν τῶν θείων λόγων βουλόμενοι. Ἔγνων γὰρ ὅτι ἀθετῶν ἀθετήσεις καὶ ἄνομος ἔτι ἐκ κοιλίας κληθήσῃ. Ἐμὲ δὲ οὐκ ἔλαθεν ὁ παράνομός σου σκοπός· προῄδειν γάρ σου τὴν ἀχάριστον γνώμην καὶ ὅτι εὐθὺς τῆς Αἰγυπτίων δουλείας ἀπαλλαγεὶς τῶν μὲν εὐεργεσιῶν ἐπιλήσῃ, δυσσεβείᾳ δὲ προσέξεις. Κοιλίαν γὰρ τὴν Αἴγυπτον καλεῖ καὶ τόκον τὴν ἐκεῖθεν ἔξοδον. Ἀλλ' ὅμως καὶ ταῦτα εἰδὼς εὐεργετῶν ὑμᾶς διετέλουν, ἐπεὶ λαὸς ἐμὸς ὀνομάζεσθε. Τοῦτο γὰρ τὰ ἑξῆς δηλοῖ· 9Ἕνεκεν τοῦ ἐμοῦ ὀνόματος δείξω σοι τὸν θυμόν μου καὶ τὰ ἔνδοξά μου ἐπάξω ἐπὶ σέ, ἵνα μὴ ἐξολοθρεύσω σε. Θυμὸν δὲ ἐκάλεσε τὴν αἰχμαλωσίαν, ἔνδοξα δὲ τὴν παράδοξον ἐλευθερίαν. 10Ἰδοὺ πέπρακά σε οὐχ εἵνεκεν ἀργυρίου, ἐξειλόμην δέ σε ἐκ καμίνου πτωχείας. Οὐ χρημάτων δεόμενος ἀπεδόμην σε Βαβυλωνίοις ἀλλὰ δίκας σε τῆς παρανομίας πραττό μενος, ἀλλ' ὅμως πάλιν σοι τὴν ἐλευθερίαν δωρήσομαι. Κάμινον γὰρ πτωχείας τὴν δουλείαν ἐκάλεσεν· καθάπερ γὰρ ἐν καμίνῳ τὸ μὲν πῦρ ἐστι κεκ ρυμ μένον, ὁ δὲ καπνὸς ἄνωθεν φαίνεται μόνος, οὕτως οἱ δορυάλωτοι θρηνεῖν μὲν προφανῶς οὐ τολ μῶσιν, ἔνδοθεν δὲ <τῇ> τῆς ἀθυμίας φλογὶ πυρπολούμενοι οἷόν τινα καπνὸν τὸν στεναγμ ὸν ἀνα πέμπουσιν.
