he says, I will cast cowardice upon them, 81.1209 and fear of enemies, so that they resort to flight and do not recognize one another, and are killed by one another. For he revealed this by saying: A man's sword shall be against his brother. (22.) And I will judge him with death and blood. Not only will they be consumed by one another, but I also will make war on them from above. With flooding rain and hailstones, and I will rain fire and brimstone upon him, and upon all those with him; and I will be magnified, and I will be glorified, and I will be hallowed, and I will be known before many nations, and they shall know that I am the Lord. For when these are given over to destruction, those who until now were ignorant of me will recognize my power, and will worship my lordship.
CHAPTER 39. Then again he commands the prophet to prophesy against him, and against the
nations with him, that by his permission they will come from the farthest north, to pay the just penalty for their savagery. And he adds also their coming weakness. 3, 4. For I will strike, he says, your bow from your left hand, and your arrows from your right hand. And I will cast you down upon the mountains of Israel, and you shall fall, you and all those about you, and the many nations that are with you. I will destroy your power, he says, so that the weapons borne in your hands will fall. To these things he adds, that they will be given as food to the birds of the air and to the flesh-eating beasts. The passage, "6. I will send fire upon Gog, and the islands will be inhabited in peace, and they will know that my name is the Lord," shows that when Gog has suffered that complete destruction, not only the inhabitants of the mainland, but also the islanders will take courage; for they had been afraid when they heard of their army. 7. And my name, he says, my holy name shall be known in the midst of Israel, and my holy name shall no longer be profaned. And he teaches the reason: "And the nations shall know that I am the Lord, holy in the midst of Israel." For when the nations have learned the power of my providence, and how I defend my people who are called by my name, they will no longer accuse me of weakness, nor will they think that the former captivity of my people happened because of my inability. Then he shows the certainty of what has been said. 81.1212 8. Behold, it is come, and you shall know that it shall be, says the Lord God. Consider them, he says, to have happened, and have irrefutable faith as concerning things that have happened; for the things foretold by me will certainly come to pass. "This is the day of which I have spoken." Concerning this day, he says, I have spoken many times. And he calls the time the day of Gog's punishment. Then he teaches that all Israel will use their weapons instead of wood, both spears and bows, and arrows, and shields and bucklers, and staves; and that they will have no need to cut wood, but for seven years the aforementioned weapons will suffice for their need. And through these things he indicates their multitude; and he also foretells the coming tomb of Gog. 11. For it shall be, he says, in that day, that I will give to Gog a place of renown, a monument of Israel, the burial-place of those who came from the east of the sea. Where, he says, they buried those who came upon them from the eastern parts, there also they will bury this one. And through this he reminds them of the slaughter of the Assyrians that took place in the time of Sennacherib; that both then they enjoyed his aid, and after this they will obtain his providence. And because of the multitude, he says, of the dead, "They shall build up the mouth of the valley, and there they shall bury Gog, and all his multitude, and it shall be called the land of the burial-place of Gog." For so great, he says, will be the multitude of those who are slain, that no man-made trench will receive them, but the deepest valley will become their tomb, being built up on both sides, and filled in from above. Ἀποτινάξω γὰρ, φησὶν, τὸ τόξον σου ἀπὸ τῆς χειρός σου τῆς ἀριστερᾶς, καὶ τὰ βέλη σου ἀπὸ τῆς χειρός σου τῆς δεξιᾶς. Ἀποστελῶ πῦρ ἐπὶ Γὼγ, καὶ κατοικι σθήσονται αἱ νῆσοι ἐπ' εἰρήνης, καὶ γνώσον ται ὅτι ὄνομά μοι Κύριος, δηλοῖ, ὡς τοῦ Γὼγ τὴν πανωλεθρίαν ἐκείνην ὑπομείναντος, οὐ μόνον οἱ ἠπειρῶται, ἀλλὰ καὶ οἱ νησιῶται θαῤ ῥήσουσιν· ἐδεδοίκεισαν γὰρ τὴν ἐκείνων στρατείαν ἀκούσαντες. ζʹ. Νόμισον αὐτὰ, φησὶ, γεγενῆσθαι, καὶ ὡς περὶ γεγενημένων ἀναντίῤῥητον ἔχε τὴν πί στιν· πάντως γὰρ γενήσεται τὰ ὑπ' ἐμοῦ προῤῥη θέντα. "Αὕτη ἐστὶν ἡ ἡμέρα, ἣν ἐλάλησα." Περὶ ταύτης, φησὶ, τῆς ἡμέρας πολλάκις προηγό ρευσα. Καλεῖ δὲ ἡμέραν τῆς τοῦ Γὼγ τιμωρίας τὸν καιρόν. Εἶτα διδάσκει, ὡς ἅπας Ἰσραὴλ ἀντὶ ξύλων τοῖς ἐκείνων χρήσονται ὅπλοις, δόρασί τε καὶ τόξοις, καὶ βέλεσι, θυρεοῖς τε καὶ πέλταις, καὶ βακτηρίαις· καὶ ὅτι οὐ δεηθήσονται ξύλων τομῆς, ἀλλ' ἐν ἑπτὰ ἔτεσιν ἀρκέσει αὐτοῖς εἰς τὴν χρείαν τὰ προειρημένα ὅπλα. Καὶ διὰ τούτων δὲ τὸ πλῆθος αὐτῶν παραδη λοῖ· προλέγει δὲ καὶ τὸ ἐσόμενον μνῆμα τοῦ Γώγ. ιαʹ. Ἔσται γὰρ, φησὶν, ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ, δώσω τῷ Γὼγ τόπον ὀνομαστὸν μνημεῖον Ἰσραὴλ, τὸ πολυάνδριον τῶν ἐπελθόντων ἐξ ἀνατολῆς τῆς θαλάσσης. Ἔνθα, φησὶν, ἔθαψαν τοὺς ἐκ τῶν ἑῴων ἐπελθόντας αὐτοῖς με ρῶν, ἐκεῖ καὶ τοῦτον θάψουσιν. Ἀναμιμνήσκει δὲ αὐτοὺς διὰ τούτου τῆς ἐπὶ τοῦ Σενναχηρεὶμ γενομέ νης τῶν Ἀσσυρίων σφαγῆς· ὅτι καὶ τότε τῆς αὐτοῦ ἐπικουρίας ἀπήλαυσαν, καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα τῆς αὐτοῦ τεύξονται προμηθείας. ∆ιὰ δὲ τὸ πλῆθος, φησὶ, τῶν νεκρῶν, "Οἰκοδομήσουσι τὸ περιστόμιον τῆς φά ραγγος, καὶ θάψουσιν ἐκεῖ τὸν Γὼγ, καὶ πᾶν τὸ πλῆθος αὐτοῦ, καὶ κληθήσεται τὸ γαὶ τὸ πολυάν δριον τοῦ Γώγ." Τοσοῦτον γὰρ, φησὶν, ἔσται τῶν ἀναιρουμένων τὸ πλῆθος, ὡς μηδὲν ὄρυγμα χειρο ποίητον αὐτοὺς δέξασθαι, ἀλλὰ τὴν βαθυτάτην φά ραγγα τάφον αὐτοῖς γενέσθαι, ἑκατέρωθεν μὲν πε ριοικοδομουμένην, ἄνωθεν δὲ χωννυμένην.
