a word of honorable brothers and fellow presbyters, to be deemed worthy to meet them is truly to return to the ancient blessedness of the Churches, when few were they who were sick over inquiries, but all were in quietness, being unashamed workers of the commandments, serving the Lord through a simple and uncurious confession and guarding the faith inviolate and uncurious in the Father and Son and Holy Spirit.
173.t TO THEODORA THE CANONESS
173.1 Not being persuaded that our letters are in every case delivered into the hands of your love, but that through the wickedness of the messengers countless others read them first, and especially now when the affairs of the world are so disturbed, makes us reluctant to write. Therefore I wait, in a way, to be blamed and to have letters demanded of me forcibly, so that I may use this very thing as proof of their delivery. And yet, whether writing or silent, we have one task: to keep in our hearts the memory of your decorum and to pray to the Lord to grant you to complete the course of the good life as you have chosen. For in truth it is no small contest to bring what follows into agreement with one's profession. For to choose the life according to the Gospel is for everyone; but to carry out the observance even to the smallest details and to overlook nothing of what is written there, this has been achieved by very few of those who have come to our knowledge, so as to use a disciplined tongue and a guided eye according to the will of the Gospel, and to work with the hands toward the goal of pleasing God, and to move the feet, and to use each of the members as our Creator ordained from the beginning; modesty in dress, guardedness in meetings with men, self-sufficiency in food, simplicity in the acquisition of necessities. All these things, though simply stated thus, we have found in very truth to require a great contest to be rightly performed. And indeed, perfection in humility too, so as neither to be mindful of the distinction of ancestors, nor, if any natural advantage belongs to us, either of body or of soul, to be puffed up by this, nor to make the opinions of others about us an occasion for pride and conceit—these things belong to the evangelical life, vigor in self-control, diligence in prayers, sympathy in brotherly love, generosity towards those in need, lowliness of mind, contrition of heart, soundness of faith, composure in sadness, the thought of the fearful and inevitable judgment seat never failing us, toward which we all are hastening, but of which very few are mindful and agonize over the outcome from it.
174.t TO ELEUTHERA
174.1 Although I very much wanted to write continually to your nobility, I have always restrained myself, lest I should seem to stir up certain temptations for you on account of those who are hostilely disposed towards us and, as I hear, carry their enmity so far as to be meddlesome if anyone anywhere even receives a letter of ours. But since you yourself, doing well, began the correspondence and wrote to us what you should, communicating the matters concerning your soul, I was prompted to write in reply, at once correcting the omissions of the past, and at the same time answering what was written by your nobility. That you are blessed
