his commandments, he who does not keep them does not love God. But let these things be said in the manner of a prayer to the Father, when Christ had suffered and his body was still lying in the tomb and he was plundering Hades, the Jews were gathered together with the sinful demons that filled them and with the other wicked powers; Let God arise, who descended into death as he had become man, so that those gathered against him may be scattered. For then also those who hate him, unable to look upon him when he had risen from the dead, will flee from his face.
682 Ps 67,3.4 Not as wickedness perishes, so the virtue of the just;
for it is written, His righteousness endures for ever and ever. And a testimony that wickedness is smoke is the saying, As unripe grapes are harmful to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, so is lawlessness to those who practice it, harming in the same way the faculties of the soul, which are figuratively called its teeth, with which it cuts and grinds spiritual foods, but also its thoughts, which are called its sight. It must be known that the melting wax from his face does not pass into non-being, but is given over to the substance of fire. Therefore, even if the quality by which someone is a sinner is changed, his substance remains incorruptible. And it is well said that sinners do not utterly perish nor cease to be, but from the face of God, since having become such as to hate him, they flee from his face by the fact that the lawless do not remain before his eyes. The exultation with which the just exult before God can be the joy which is a Fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, while gladness, which diffuses the mind of the soul, is rightly called a good passion. 683a Ps 67,5b One would not do good without turning away from evil (for they are incompatible), nor would one be enlightened by the sun of righteousness while still partaking of him who transforms himself into an angel of light and feigns to be the sun of righteousness, but is called the light of impiety: For the light of the impious will be extinguished. For when this one sets, that one rises in our hearts, mounting upon its setting. Prepare a way for him who comes with the Lord's name according to Moses and the prophets, for him to mount upon the west. where Adam was cast out from the paradise planted in the east, in order to bring him again into the east, which he also did when he said to the repentant thief, Today you will be with me in paradise. 684 Ps 67,6a Encouraging those who are oppressed by Satan, the word urges them to exultation by showing who will be their protector and helper, who is a father of the fatherless and a judge of widows. Therefore, be eager to exult before him, especially when, having left the former father who begot you in wickedness and the first husband unlawfully cohabiting with you, you become orphans from that one; for you will have God as a father. But also the souls that have renounced the unlawful union, having become widowed, will experience cohabitation with God. 685a Ps 67,6b His holy place happens to be either the church sanctified by Christ or each one of the believers; for both are true. And his holy place is also the ensouled and rational body which he assumed. 686a Ps 67,7bc But he also leads the dead out of the tombs according to the verse, The dead shall rise, and those in the tombs shall be raised; for the dew from you is a healing for them; such as also that in the Gospel, The hour will come when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice (namely, of the Son) and will come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment. 687a Ps 67,8.9a That is, in God's going forth before his people or out of
